Okay. IMO I think intel's processors cost way too much and I think that AMD has similar performance. I mean really, an amd x6 1090t black edition costs approximately $270 and an i7 -980X extreme costs around $900. And your'e barely getting extra power. IMHO that is a comeplete rip.

Performance wise, Intel wins without a doubt. But they are also incredibly overpriced.

AMD for Price/Performance

Intel for raw power.

Intel seems to always have the most powerful processors, but they are usually around a thousand $ which is WAY too much.

Actually a comparable 4 core i7 at around the same price as the AMD X6 processors is actually more powerful.

From the benchmarkes a Core i7 920 at 2.66 ghz is very close in terms of power to the X6 1090t. Source. However the i7-980x blows them all out of the water.

I have a Core i7 930 at 3.8ghz in my current build and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I've always preferred Intel. Their parts usually are stronger and last longer than comparable AMD processors. However their stuff is a bit more expensive.

Fair opinion. Do you have a custom heatsink/fan on that chip?

Intel usually makes the best chips, but their prices are insane compared to AMD.

Example:

An Intel i5 750($190) is around the same price as an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T ($185).

AMD destroys in price vs performance. Intel wins in just ultimate power. Intel is also infamous for never dropping processor prices even after new cpus are out. Kinda weird to see Core 2 quads still sell way more then i5's or i7's.

Of course. The thing does have some heat problems with the stock and I pushed the OC a bit.

AMD is also better because they tend to use the same socket a lot longer than Intel. Every time you upgrade with Intel you need a new mobo as well.

Dang that is cheap.

However the benchmarks of the X6 series aren't fantastic like that of the i7 series, but you don't pay nearly as much.

Performance per watt leadership = Intel.

Performance per $$$ = AMD.

Intel's upcoming CPUs will be limited in overclocking unless you purchases the premium K series. AMD's performance per cost is going to be even better.

wow that sucks:|

my X4 955 already dropped $15 because the X4 970 came out just this week I think.

I've only had my 955 for 3 weeks. it is kind of annoying to see your $15 feel wasted though, but I'm just one person after all:P

Definately agree with that. Maybe they do that so it's only worth upgrading to their new parts.

Would be nice to replace my old c2d to a c2q in my old computer on the cheap.

personally i dont remain loyal to either camp. at the mo its AMD and ATI (or just AMD now i suppose) because they offered what i wanted for the budget i had. my last rig was an intel/nvidia for the same reason. ive had very good experiences with both camps overall so im not pro or anti either of them. if i was to buy a PC today though then it would probably be an i5 760 and a 1GB 460. but im very happy with my 955 and 5850...there performing very well.

eh. I don't understand all of that fully.

but I do know of the Mhz myth. that's not what it all comes down to. there's other factors. an Intel running at a slower clock rate than 3.4 Ghz can still outperform the AMD CPU you're talking of.

I'm not convinced Nvidia is the way to go anymore. In the past I would've agreed, but the new Nvidia chips run way too hot and use too much power when compared to similiar gpus from ATI. I recently upgraded to a HD5850 my first ATI GPU in the longest time and couldn't be happier.

Intel outperforms AMD in every aspect at least for 4 cores and above. There six core fails to outperform Intels quads, and those are at stock. AMD processors not so geat, AMD GPU's (or should i say ATI) are really great, and the AMD 6000 series is looking really impressive.

However i will add AMD are good processors if your on a tight budget.

For graphics cards AMD are just better period. Intel CPU's are better but high priced, i have AMD build atm and its very cheap and you get very good performance with it. So i will be going with AMD CPU and well as AMD graphics cards in the future my pick AMD.

AMD allows me to stay within my budget :P

I've been buying them for years because you can always buy great (though not the best) processors for $50-$100. As far as I know AMD still is the only one with a quad core on the market for under $100 which is what I got, and well, my PC plays everything :P

Honestly, I don't have a real preference for either one although it has been AMD for my gaming PCs during this decade. I also have assembled other (non-gaming) PCs with Intel processors.

For pure processing power, I'd go with Intel. But with new tech becoming available such as Stream and CUDA which outperform the latest mainsteam processors, it makes more sense to get an intermediate CPU and save some moolah. Or use that moolah on a beefier GPU.

Intel is better for laptops, AMD is better for budget desktops. For everything else who really cares since they both make great cpus that are far faster and cheaper than what was available 6 years ago.

I never understood Intel or AMD fanboys, buy whatever meets your needs.

This is incorrect

1156 socket uses DDR3 as well. 1366 is for tri-channel memory, which AMD doesn't even support yet.

CPU manufacturers already do that. They charge you more money for the same processor at a slightly higher clock speed that you could easily get it at.

the best cpu right now is the Intel quad core i7-875k

its a $300 dollar unlocked i7 quad core cpu that can easily be overclocked to 5ghz+ with water cooling and at that speed it destroys the six core amd by 75%+ in most benchmarks.

I love my li'l Core i7 860. The performance is amazing, it responds really well to better cooling, and with nothing but a feeble Corsair H50 cooling system I can get it to 3.3 GHz at stock voltage and have temps that never, ever hit more than 65 at load. I'm pretty sure if I OV'd I could hit 3.7-3.8 GHz easily: after all, I can take it up to 95 centigrade before it starts throttling itself. I built my family a computer with a phenom 2 940 @ 3.0 GHz. It's horrible! I've got a very nice air cooling system on it, with 80mm yate-loon fans sucking air away from the heatsink (which has a 120mm coolermaster on it at the moment) and a 120mm Scythe on the front drawing in quite a bit of air. I can't get the load temps to stay under 55 at stock everything, which is infuriating. "But wait!" you say, "isn't that lower than the intel?" Well, the AMD chip starts throttling back at 62 degrees Centigrade. I'm literally 7 centigrade away from damage on that thing and I'm not even running a stock heatsink! Not even a better thermal compound helped! While intel seem to have gone a little socket-happy, necessitating a new motherboard for even a minor CPU upgrade, the problems I've had with AMD temps lead to me feel that I'll be an intel man for the forseeable future. AMD's next architecture does look very, very cool, though.
