Analyst: PS4 will outsell X1 by 23 million units by 2019

According to a recent study by Strategy Analytics, the PlayStation 4 is on its way to outpacing the Xbox One by 23 million in lifetime sales through 2018.

The Connected Home Devices report suggests that 80 million PS4 consoles will be in use by 2019, compared to 57 million Xbox One consoles –– that's a 40 percent higher installed base for Sony's new console. 2019 is near the projected peak for both consoles' life cycles, but there will be room for "modest future growth," Strategy Analytics says.

Last week, Sony told IGN 18.5 million PS4s have been sold since the console launched in November of 2013. The Xbox One has shipped an estimated 12.4 million units during the same period, according to the study. At those paces, the PS4 is closer to first-year sales of the PS2, which initially sold 20.1 million. The PS2 remains the best-selling console in history, moving 150 million units in its lifetime. The Nintendo Wii, coming in at second, sold more than 100 million.

I personally think they were being a bit generous with the X1 numbers, lol.

I think analysts say a lot of things but they don't predict the future. They can't account for the unknown.

Many analysts and industry vets said the 720 would win Gen 8 based on the success and drive of the 360. That clearly didn't happen because MS shot themselves in the foot and then threw itself down some stairs. No one could predict that. A lot can change in a short time. MS could screw up again or thy could keep chipping away with price cuts, bundles and exclusives. I wouldn't put much stock in it

There is no way to accurately predict sales of consoles 4 years from now. They can barely predict what is going happen 6 months from now. I should make up my own numbers and garner the publicity.

I don't put much stock into what analyst say. Analysts just base their predictions off of current sales and momentum, but there are too many unpredictable factors that could shift momentum in the future.

Prior to the 7th gen, analyst thought that the PS3 was going to dominate the 360 based on the PS2's successs, but then Sony made many mistakes with the PS3 and Microsoft did everything right with the 360, so that didn't happen. Then prior to the 8th gen, analyst thought that the new Xbox would win based on the 360's success, but then Microsoft screwed up and Sony took advantage of the screwup, so now PS4 is currently beating the Xbox One.

Based on current sales and momentum, that prediction seems about right, but there is a lot that could happen in the next few years that could shift the momentum.

I don't put too much faith in analysts. These are the same folks who said the PS3 would be the world-wide console leader by 2011.

Even that i think sony will win i have to agree with this,most analyst are clueless,last gen the PS3 was suppose to kill everything alto at $600 only a moron would have predicted that.

Well the biggest wrong number there ins't the PS3 one that chart mark like 108 million for the PS3 and sony sold like 85 million so like 23 million behind,alto that is to 2012,the xbox one was the really low one,off by like 46 millions,even the wii one was off by several millions.

That is something that is unpredictable.....there are so many variables that are unaccounted for.....just nonsense.

Aside from buying sony and canceling the PS4,i don't see any way they can stop sony from outselling them.

The PS4 is basically doubling the xbox one now,and nothing they have done has stop the bleeding.

Still to early. MS could start selling the Xbone at 299 with a slim SKU before PS4 slim. That'll drive a lot of sales.

I see both PS4 and X1 selling an equal number of around 90 million by 2020.

But anything could happen: Hackers, natural disaster taking out half of Japan, M$ giving out X1 for free, faulty hardware in the new slim SKUs, dev teams leaving, Publishers having a cold war with a system, Hackers again, etc.

I don't believe that was an improper statement, because "correctly" is implied.

If Sony sells 90 Million PS4 consoles and MS sells 65 million consoles both will be plenty profitable.

True, but Xbox wasn't behind last gen, so a slim and a price drop weren't needed.

I don't think they'll do so because Sony can't afford it. Right now, the demand is still high and they're making money on each console sold. If the demand starts to slow down tremendously, Sony should be able to lower the price, especially with a slim.

2 years if you count the 360 release 1 year before the PS3 yet it receive a slim 1 year after it,but is was better than the gen before the original xbox didn't get any so it may improve in timing.

No one cares if there are no good games.

Just look at the Wii, it's a POS, and it sold a lot because of casuals, the same is happening with the PS4.

57 million is far too high. I'd put a generous upper estimate of Xbone sales at 50 million. It will more likely be around 40 million.

@GarGx1: is not the first time both the nes and snes were behind arcade hardware by the time they launch at least now you get the same gameplay with fewer graphics back the. You use to get even different games from their arcade counter parts.

It depends how far MS are willing to go. They could seriously undercut Sony and take a big loss if they wanted too. Sony can't exactly afford that.

Dude, by 2019 4k will be the standard resolution and 8k will be knocking on the door. A lot of people, including myself, are gaming at 1440p and over 60fps with maxed out graphics that outstrip the console capabilities already. The way things are looking the PC games industry is going to, largely, jump 2k and head straight into 4k without missing a heartbeat. It's already happening.

Today's console hardware struggles with 1080p and 30 fps, without cutting back fidelity.

The consoles are weak this generation, it's a sad situation but very true. I wish they were power houses and driving gaming into unseen boundaries but they aren't and they're not going to either. Sony and MS (especially MS unless they blow off Xbox - not going to happen) are going to use every resource and penny (Sony doesn't have the same pennies but they do have the influence) they can spare to hold up game progression to try and stop their precious cheap ass consoles from being left so far behind tablets will out strip them.

Unfortunately Destiny roles into that category and The Order likely will as well.

Driveclub's been selling well, i know Killzone hit 2m the end of 2013 if that counts as a flop given hype was pretty low for it.

destiny metascore is at 76, 76 falls into the "good" category. well what else do you expect cows to buy? all of their games are certified flops. they have no choice but to buy shit games.

There appears to be link between critical flops being commercial successes and PS4.

How well did the Halo remake sell? Just out of interest to see if Xbox One gamers have the same pre-disposition with buying badly made games.
