For the record, I like the PSP and will buy one after a price drop. Anyways, I stumbled across this prediction by SIG marketing made about 14 months ago and was laughing my arse off. I mean I understand that a lot of people thought the PSP was gong to win the battle against the DS, but these guys got everything completely backwards, right down to the fact that they thought the PSP could expand the market and appeal to a larger demographic which is exactly what the DS did. Anyways, I though it was entertaining so check it ou: Analyst: PSP Will Increase U.S. Lead Over DS By Colin Campbell U.S. sales of Sony PSP will dwarf those of Nintendo DS over the next five years, according to a report released today. Image SIG has compared year-by-year sales and estimates for the first five years of each machine's life, using sell-in and factory shipments. It points out that in its first year both PSP and DS managed around 13 million units each, with DS slightly ahead. Year two cumulative stats give PSP 25 million over DS' 22 million. In Year Three the difference rises to ten million (38m to 28m). In Year Four, PSP's lead has stretched to 15 million and to 20 million by Year Five. Software unit sales will increase cumulatively from Year One's 70 million units to 122 million in Year 2, and over 200 million in Year Three. SIG stated, "Sony will likely expand the addressable market for portable gaming devices with the PSP. As the class of gamers seeking console-like gaming grows, the PSP will be the only serious alternative to Nintendo portables. In time the variety and depth of games on the PSP could attract a larger demographic than even Nintendo portables." It added, "Yet we must keep in mind that the PSP is Sony's first attempt and the launch has not been without problems. Hardware pricing is probably stifling PSP adoption, and ported game selection is limited." SIG also points out that software revenue mix in calendar year 2005 will be Nintendo 58% / third parties 42% for DS, but Sony 24% / third parties 76% for PSP. http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2118&Itemid=46

I never trust analysts. Ever. They suck at their jobs, because their jobs suck.

This must be an April fools joke. Either that or the "analyst" needs to find a new job.

That's uncanny. Switch both "Nintendo" with "Sony" and "PSP" with "DS" and he was exactly right! Sadly, that's about as right the normal analyst gets...

To be fair, that was generally the opinion of everyone before the PSP and DS were released.  It is funny how wrong everyone was though

It's not an april fools joke, I even provided the link at the bottom of my post. However, keep in mind that this was published 14 months ago. It's still a stupid decision cuz I got my DS around the time this was published and part of the reason that I went with the DS over the PSP was that it was buiding up steam and I knew would soon be the undisputed winner. The key was the Japan Sales of the holiday 05 season. The DS literally exploded during that holiday season and I knew there was no going back in Japan, and I felt that would transfer over to the other regions. So it's pretty sad that I read the market better then these guys.

How can the PSP even hope to beat the DS? It has some good games, but the DS is so popular, and bursting with games.... It' cannot hope to catch up.

Even though the PSP isn't out-selling the DS,it's still selling pretty damn good considering the competition it's up against. This is Sony's first real portable and they are the only one's who I think can give Nintendo competition in that department.

I just posted something about the PSP. I finally played one for the first time and I love it. I'm thinking about buying one actually. Much better than the DS in my opinion. Plays Sports titles and games like Metal Gear great. Something the DS fails at.

Yeah if you like Sports titles, fighting games, or realistic racing games then the PSP is the way to go. Besides those genres, the DS wins in all others imo.

I'll admit that the PSP does well in the states, but I doubt this will happen.

Find some of the pre-E3 ones about the PS3.  Heck, some of the pre-Sept '06 ones about the PS3.  Find some of the ones post-"Wii" revelation.

Anything that analysts say that actually gets noticed is because they're talking OUT OF THEIR MINDS.  The ones you hear about are the crazy ones, because CRAZY sells.

too be fair loads of ppl thought the PSP would stomp all over the DS- but it hasnt happened. the benefit of hindsight enables us to laugh at these predictions but what about all the Ps3, X360 or Wii predictions- in a few years we'll be able to laugh at some of them.

Almost, the sales gap is a lot bigger than they predicted however, it's already at 20 million now, who knows how big it'll be in 3 years time.

Isn't this what analysts were saying during launch. The PSP is selling very well and is a success in its right (needs a couple of more AAA games but otherwise it's great at what it does). However the DS is just a monster.

Seriously, analysts always seem to be wrong. Even with all of them saying PSP would kill the DS I could tell they were all wrong...I don't get why they thought the handheld would be such a success.

I think it's made a fair dent in the handheld market though so the next battle will be interesting.Â
