Not at all surprised over here. I've been predicting this sort of thing for a long time.
I am a bit surprised to see just how big Nintendo's marketshare was/is next to Sony's. I would've thought the PSP was doing better than that! :o
most of the people buying games for ios and android are not serious gamers. many of those games brought for people to keep their children busy with or to do something when they slack off of work.so im not surprised they have raked in a lot of cash.
but dont worry.there will always be a market for console and handhelds because serious gamers like us don't want to just play angry birds or a water down versions of call of duty and resident evil.
$0.99 for a 5 minute game will do that. Not to mention the whole microtransaction system, where they give away the game for free and charge for in-game items. Also, install bases are significantly larger. All lot of variables.foxhound_fox
Well, let's not generalize here. There are plenty of actually substantial games on iOS and Android, some even available for $.99,
Handhelds are dying.... :PShadowDeathXi disagree. i own a ipod touch. i some games on it. i love playing these games. but when i want something more challenging i go to my DS.
not only that, gaming sucks the life out of your battery. after about an hour it's time to plug in.
This is such a joke as it doesn't consider 3DS software or upcoming Vita software, nor does it consider the holidays.
I'm sure DS/PSP/3DS and a little bit of Vita after the holidays in 2011 will make more money in the end
I mean, Ocarina of Time 3D alone has made just under $60 million. Super Mario Land just grossed $15 million in 3 days in Japan
i disagree. i own a ipod touch. i some games on it. i love playing these games. but when i want something more challenging i go to my DS.[QUOTE="ShadowDeathX"]Handhelds are dying.... :Phelwa1988

you just gave yourself away. Lets face it, you so called serious gamers carry around your smartphones more than you do your PSP/DS/3DS. That's just common sense though (it's my cell phone after all). :? I never take my handheld systems outside of my house for good reasons though. If I'm going out O'm probably doing something where it wouldn't make much sense to take a game system along with me. Now don't get me wrong I probably play my DS and PSP far more than I do my PS3,360 and I never play games on my Evo.Angry Birds and Tetris are about as sophisticated as handheld games deserve to be. Still bothers me that developers invest time in those stupid gadgets when they could be making real games better.
The thread title might be a little misleading -- the article is really about how iOS/Android games, for the first time, now account for a greater share of portable revenue than handheld games do. It doesn't really have anything to do with how much money Nintendo/Sony bring in.Sony = 1 company. Nintendo = 1 company.
Android, iOS = over 9000
They split the moneys.
SuperFlakeman
Why wouldn't they? I'm pretty sure those devs are expecting to make a profit from those titles and they're not going to develop crap just because it's a handheld title. As for the "real games" remark are the handheld games not real games as well? Heck I've seen PSP and DS titles with more depth in gameplay compared to titles on the HD twins.Angry Birds and Tetris are about as sophisticated as handheld games deserve to be. Still bothers me that developers invest time in those stupid gadgets when they could be making real games better.

Fortunatelly it's US only. Because if the same would happen in Japan their gaming industry would collapse. Handhelds are the last place smaller japanese devs can make lower-budgeted games and still make decent money.

I don't play games on my Evo I use it strictly for talk and text (school and work related). I might some music on it every now and then. Other than that I use my PSP and DS for entertainment purposes compared to my phone. Look I have nothing against gaming on smartphones...I don't do not have any interest on smart phones.[QUOTE="PSP107"] you just gave yourself away. I love all forms of gaming. Mobile gaming on phones isn't bad, games like Infinity Blade are really fun, and I'm surely looking forward to IB 2, but also games like Cut the Rope or Plants vs Zombies (I know it's released everywhere, but i think it's best on mobile phones) and other quick burst games are fun too. Sometimes you just want to play a simple quick fix that allows that during your break at work. I usually have something like DOA: D with me at work, because I enjoy playing survival on my break, since it lets me fight endless enemies in the time I'm limited too. It's great, shame there aren't enough modes though that are good for this play. I love my 3DS too though, I take it everywhere I go, along with my mobile phone, but I can see why mobile games on phones is rising. They're just with you, everywhere you go. yoshi_64@Jasonharris48 Just read Yoshi_64 statement

Someone post isn't going to change my opinion on the matter. I use my phone as a phone that's as far as it goes. I'm not intersted in games that I can play in quick burst all the time (although I do admit I enjoy Plants vs Zombies)
I always love threads like this about mobile gaming. I always get a laugh because half the people that post in these threads are truly clueless about mobile gaming, yet feel the need to post anyways as if we can't tell just how clueless they are on the subject. Angry Birds is the first thing out their mouth when trying to insult mobile gaming because that's the only game they know about for mobile gaming because all the angry bird ads we see on tv and they think that's all there is to mobile gaming is those silly little games such as angry Birds. Yes I get great chuckles out of these threads knowing half the people that comment in them don't know their ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to mobile gaming, but boy do they like to put their worthless uninformed 2 cents in on the subject as if they do. It is always good for laughs at least.AmazonTreeBoaThere's a lot of ignorance regarding mobile gaming and some of it is out of fear. I used to be one of those people that forgot its not all smartphones but dedicated entertainment devices like iPods and tablets making up these numbers, there's also much stronger games out there than Angry Birds in droves. Can't wait for the Onlive app and controller to come out too, as long as they support Sweden.

But over the past year or so, alot these so call serious gamers dissed mobile gaming and yet they admit they have their smartphones on the more than their DS/PSP. They even admitted that play mobile games on it aswell to point who needs a dedicated portable video game system.[QUOTE="PSP107"][QUOTE="yoshi_64"]I love all forms of gaming. I probably stick to my DS and PSP until Square-Enix, Atlus, Nintendo, Falcom, NIS and Level 5 decide to develop their flagship handheld titles onto the mobile market. Which can happen soon I see that FF Tactics WotL is now available oon the Itunes store, and that game is the best FF title to date. No, I'll put it this way the day I can play a full brown Monster Hunter title is the day I won't need a dedicated handheld system.[QUOTE="PSP107"] @Jasonharris48 Just read Yoshi_64 statement PSP107

Epic said that the average iOS game only makes $300. This market is just a bubble waiting to pop.EponiqueI read in an article recently that 80% of the market is dominated by 30% of the dev's, sounds about right but there's still a gold mine in reach to anyone if they make a great game.
