NICE. Is it going to be AA on Gamespot too?

http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/984/984846p1.html

"Closing Comments
Given the distinct lack of RTS games on the system, even a perfunctory port of Anno would be welcome on Wii. Quite unexpectedly though, Ubisoft has delivered a game that's been thoughtfully designed around the strengths of Nintendo's system, delivering an experience that retains the essence and depth of the long-running series while streamlining it to offer a pacier, more accessible twist on the familiar formula, replacing unnecessary complexity with gameplay breadth. By shunning the micro-management elements of the series, Create a New World mightn't be enough to satiate genre fans raised on PC offerings. However, anyone looking for an engaging, involving alternative to typically lightweight Wii fare should be delighted by Anno's bright, breezy and beautifully presented Wii debut." IGN.

I got this preordered for £15 and it should arrive in a few days. It was mispriced (now costs £30) and i didn't think they'd honour my order placement - but they did! I'm well chuffed. :D

The Wii should get more games like this, the pointer controls just make sense.

What if it got AA reviews from other sources, including Gamespot? Seriously, Ubisoft is quite two-faced...

I always find it weird how reviews give an overall rating that have nothing to do with individual categories.

For example, the highest the game scored is 8.5, but gets an overall 8.7. I know it says its not an average, but why not use the average?

a game could have awesome graphics and sound but suck everywhere else, that average really wouldn't be doing the game justice,

I haven't played the PC version but from what i've read, it's similar. Going of this review, the PC Annos have 'huge island sprawls' compared to the Wii Anno and the micro-management is more complex.

Nice for Wii users.

Altough this probably means PC version will be a total screwup, regardless of total differences.

I just started playing it. For now, I have only seen one small difference to the DS version (tributes can only be made full, not in parts), but one thing really stood out from the beginning:

I cannot believe how polished the game is. That's some crazy stuff. It looks and feels like a Nintendo game; it's not that the graphics are particularly good, but the whole thing is so incredibly well stylized, it controls so well and so smooth, every menu is exactly where it needs to be, the learning curve - especially for this type of game - is incredibly well done, every little sound effect is pleasant, and everything just reeks of polish. A lot of thought must've went into the user interface and sound design. Plus, real 16:9 480p without Over/underscan that plague so many Wii titles these days (including Boom Blox BP. Shame on you, EA.)

I am very impressed. The only thing left for this game to blow me away is that it won't be dumbed down in the long run. Reviews and previews have been vague about military and combat, which were already simplified in the DS version. If it offers the complexity I expect and keeps that sense of polish, then wow. It's so sad to know this game will not sell well.

The boxart doesn't help either. This is NOT shovelware, judging the book by it's cover would make you think it was. And here goes yet another quality 3rd party Wii game that's going to be overlooked by so many people. I'm going to play it after work... :D

A few hours playing last night has left me thoroughly surprised. Although the art direction can be considered off-putting to some, the game runs incredibly smooth (maybe 60 fps?) and is clean with intuitive user interfaces. I'm going through the story mode and a few hours in, i still feel like i'm in the tutorial. I have only just begun encountering hostiles. I agree with Lothenon, the game is polished - very polished; things go about with that sort of 'Nintendo quality'. There is also a lot of good voice-acting and the amount of exploration and purchasing maps shows just how much more there is to do. I've yet to go into military-mode but it won't be long until i reach that stage. Anno: Create a New World has surprised me at how well this type of game works with the Wii pointer even in standard definition. Good stuff.

I am a little disappointed that they did away with the upgradable buildings. Yes, you can still upgrade marketplaces, but the lack of upgradable ressource deliverers really wasn't necessary. Now you have no choice but to build new stuff when you realize ressources are getting limited; I imagine this will become much more frustrating later on when your islands are absolutely stuffed than it would've produced more confusion for new players. It's not like it's a difficult concept: The option to increase the working costs for your facilites to increase productivity.

I was hoping hat they wouldn't simplify the already simplified DS version even more, but they couldn't help themselves in some areas. Sure, for every scrapped functionality they seem to have added a new one (in this case, your "partners" that you can have settle on an island to for example increase productivity) but still.

I have started the game on hard difficulty from the get-go. Let's see if it is a challenge for those who've beaten the DS version and played the PC games.

I started on Normal but i haven't played the PC or DS versions. maybe it'll be just right for me? I think the islands are supposed to be made smaller thus encouraging players to utilise the land they have to the fullest and expanding to other islands. Maybe this decision also made them remove the mentioned options?

Well, a niche genre will do that - especially on consoles. I should be getting Little King's Story but i'm pretty sure the price is going drop soon. That's another game more people should be talking about instead. Having said that, these 2 games aren't out in USA yet so...

I am wondering about this as well. Little King's Story is an AAA title, Swords&Soldiers is getting it's AAs in, Anno / Dawn of Discovery as well, there's Fire Emblem and the rereleases of Pikmin, plus most probably Pikmin3 on the horizon. The Wii is getting really awesome in the strategy department.

But nobody cares.

I really, really hope that this is getting some stateside attention. Is it even released there yet?

Yeah, but Anno is a very established PC franchise already. :D

And Ubisoft did a great job on the Wii, which is a pleasant surprise. Gives me hope for Red Steel 2.

I think credit should be given to the developers, not the publisher. Blue Byte and Keen Games are responsible for the gameplay whereas the atrocious box-art, plain black and white manual should be blamed on Ubisoft. Ubisoft should also be taking care of advertising/exposure to the market too, of which they're doing a terrible job. P.S. at the back of the manual, it mentions CD-keys as if this was a PC game...really. :|

How so? It's not like strategy isn't a factor on the console. There's Fire Emblem, the Pikmin rereleases, Pikmin 3 on the horizon, Swords & Soldiers is getting high marks everywhere, Simcity Creator sold very well, Little King's Story I don't have to explain, Batallion Wars II from the very beginning, and now Dawn of Discovery.

Strategy on the Wii owns, and there is demand.

If this game - a high quality, incredibly polished Wii RTS game - doesn't sell well, it's entirely Ubis fault for not marketing, for relying on the name "Anno" when it is absolutely meaningless outside of Germany, and for hiring incompetent boxart designers.

I've almost completed the story mode and i'm leaning towards a very strong 7.5 or an 8.0.

Is normal difficulty as forgiving as I imagine it to be? When did you first encounter problems with the way you built things?

Most of the times that i encounter problems are when i upgrade to Patricians. They need a good supply of pottery and spices to keep them happy. With the way islands are setup, you're limited by where and how much you can produce these goods. And then it's further complicated by islands not having the required fertility which you unlock with the water pump. I find you can't just populate islands full of people for money, you need the resources to satisfy them and so i usually end up building a single settlement full of people and the surrounding islands supporting them with resource gathering.

I just watched some videos. It looks very nice, and like a lot of fun. *Added to buy-when-there's-money-list*
