Sony's online service requires 3rd parties to pay for games to be online.  That's why Konami pulled the plug on MGS3 after a year and Capcom pulled RE: Outbreak after 2.

Name one game that you can't play online that was released on the xbox platform.

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/770/770381p1.html

March 5, 2007 - Hot on the heels of last week's news that Konami is shutting down the Metal Gear Solid 3: Subistence servers, Capcom has announced it will pull the plug on the Resident Evil Outbreak File#2 servers at the end of this month.

A post from a Super Moderator on the official RE Outbreak 2 forums reads: "Since Resident Evil Outbreak File#2 was released in August 2005 , Capcom has provided a server enabling consumers to experience the online element of this game free of charge. Regretfully, conditions now dictate that we must close down this server effective from March 31, 2007. Naturally it will still be possible to play the game offline, but the online component will no longer be available."

The post makes no mention of the original Resident Evil Outbreak, so it looks like the first online zombie game will remain in play.

Today Nielsen released data showing more than 4.4 million gamers now take their consoles online. But it looks like, with the recent console transition, companies are cleaning out some of their lesser-used online games

Sounds to me like Lemmings are stretching here. They ran out of things to bad mouth Sony about so they have to stretch beyond to 3rd party devs.

I believe it would be COD2, a launch title.  You can also play BC original Xbox games on live just fine.

Microsoft can't force people to play their games, but they allow players to play the games online for years.  If 500 people love an old game but they conistantly play it, that's 500 happy people that wouldn't have that chance on the PSN.

The reason why we have to use Xbox as a reference is because it has a much longer history and the games still function on the 360.  Every 360 game is still online.

So you can't draw the connection that this is a Sony PS2 only game?

Not you anymore, ever again. RE:O and RE:O2 were made to be online co-op style games. You are not the only person that owned this game (although not a whole lot of people really did). I am sure their are plenty of people out there that wish they could still have the ability to play online when they wanted to. No chance of that happening now is there?

What is the big deal.  PSN is not PS2s online system.  The PS2 onlines system had a tiny attachment rate.  Very few people were online on the PS2.  That is not the case with PS3.  PS3 has a large community of online users and that means their games will remain supported.  PS2 online games are being trashed because their are pretty much nobody playing those games and the community is small.  They cant take away features on the PS3 PSN because the online community is large and making a large group of people unhappy is not wise.

I mean look at the changes to PSN.  They are adding so much to compete with XBL.  You cant compare PSN to PS2s online system, the community is very different.  Especially when they are trying to retire the PS2.  PS2 online games do not reflect PSN at all, it only reflects PS2s failed online system and the fact they are trying to push consumers to upgrade, kinda of how MS stopped supporting the Xbox game wise.  I think stopping support of games for a console is worse then closing online systems for games nobody played anymore.

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/770/770381p1.html

THIS IS exactly why XBL is a much better service because the whole network is a framework that it already in place ready for the developers to take care off... Cows always going on about how the PSN is free ... but dont realise that the developer has to pay for most of the setup and some developers are simply NOT prepared to do that .... whereas with XBL they dont need to worry about the architecture.... they just use the XBL libraries supplied by MS ... thats where part of our yearly subscription goes!

And for those games did we have to pay online? No, so nice try and remember thats last gen games which are pulled because the ps3 is here with better online service and I am an xbox 360 owner aswell but if u want a low blow, MS abandoned the regular xbox, and for us owners that owned one and wanted to play new games we were forced to buy the new system because the regular xbox is dead. The fact im pointing out is this is nothing really big because even though they do pull the plug on these games, the ps2 is still very much alive and has games coming out for it, as for my xbox sitting in my garage collecting dust, it has officially been abandoned. Catch my drift? Anywayz be happy mass effect and halo 3 are on der way. :)

Well you can still play old Xbox games online. They just quit making games for it, which is totally different then gimping games people already own by turning off the online service.

They have gone down a little but mostly because or Rainbow Six Vegas. Also, I'd be willing to bet that anyone one of the top 10 games on the 360 has more than even the most PS2 or PS3 game has.

THIS IS exactly why XBL is a much better service because the whole network is a framework that it already in place ready for the developers to take care off... Cows always going on about how the PSN is free ... but dont realise that the developer has to pay for most of the setup and some developers are simply NOT prepared to do that .... whereas with XBL they dont need to worry about the architecture.... they just use the XBL libraries supplied by MS ... thats where part of our yearly subscription goes!TurboGuru

You don't have to look far to find out what the devs really think. Look no further than the current issue of EGM:

WHAT THE DEVELOPERS SAY

"I expected more from a company that had one more year than Microsoft to improve upon what the competition was doing. Why (Sony) couldn't have an online architecture half as good as (that of) Xbox Life is beyond me. I don't know the last time that horsepower alone wone a console war, but that's what they seem to be banking on."

-Anonymous game designer

"(PlayStation Network) was a debacle from day one. Basically, the developers have to do all the heavy lifting. Microsoft required us to simply plug in to their code. Sony requires us to build it or use an outside technology source. Unfortunately, I feel that the quality of the titles could be much improved if the development process wasn't so excruciatingly painful.
"As far as our relationship goes, Microsoft is far superior in terms of communication, support, and timeliness.... Even the initial technical certification requirement documentation (from Sony) was late and then only came in Japanese. We had to hire a translator. Do you think that sped things up or slowed them down? Who needs additional headaches when you're already trying to accomplish the impposible?
"As a studio, we're excited about the possibilities on the PlayStation 3, and we'll jump through hoops to support it, but that doesn't mean we have to pretend to be happy about it."

-Anonymous game producer

the longest game that has lasted online for the 360 has been what 3 months?Gears of War online numbers are even going down...

GeoW is #1 on XBL and you are wrong Online games on Xbox last for years.

Gears on War online numbers have changed dramatically...i always use to never have trouble finding the right co-op or online gamess 2 months ago but now its a joke..and were not talking aboutthe Xbox

Maybe you can't find a co-op game since...most people have already beat the game (numerous times) and finding ranked games now is a...you know since they limit the amount of games you can search for at one time.
