get ready to update your system in order to sign on psn. it wont help you or add anything you might of wanted. instead it is to stop the trick people found to play ps2 games with a usb doogle. which also let you download and play ps3 games from your hdwith out discs. and let you play pirate discs.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/111/1118695p1.html

makes you wonder why sony doesnt make one that lets ps3 users to buy a legit one so they can at least play ps2 games.

there was another news story on ign saying more about it. but seems they were forced to remove it and replace it with this news thread instead.

I have a feeling we're going to get about 100 more firmware updates trying to stop this piracy until Sony just give up. Yay

Yeah because all the way since 2006 to late 2010 it just didn't get pirated because "no games".

Rite?

From what I hear, they succeeded in stomping out the jailbreak..... for now.

All they really need to do is make it detectable so they can ban people from PSN.

The banhammer will come down extremely hard come release of CoD: BO.

Now that its been hacked, they'll just keep cracking the firware updates. This is going to turn into another PSP situation where we get a firmware update every bloody day that doesn't actually benefit us gamers who don't jailbreak it.

What makes you think they'll succeed?

Hackers have a jailbreak to work off of now. Theyll make it better.

Hacking is a relentless scene and the PS3 one is quickly opening up.

Not sure why this is posted in System Wars? It's about the 3.42 PS3 update. What exactly does this have to do with System Wars? Honest question.

This has nothing to do with PS2 games. Nor is it anything to do with System Wars.

And good, if it stomps out piracy on the system, then I'm all for it.

If people are looking to blame someone for some reason they should direct their attention to the l33t h4x0rz.

Yes that's a universal formula for all users right, because we all have blazing fast interent?

All these updates really screw over the 20 GB PS3 users because the updates are always around 160+ MB. At this rate it's gonna force those PS3 owners to upgrade their HDDs. It's sad when a generation is FORCED to upgrade their CONSOLES just to get by these days.

Really i prefer sony update and make it harder for them yeah its some inconvenience to us but ultimately it keeps the pirates on their toes.

The Modchip was no hack, just someone managed to make one and put it into production, it was an intentional ability for unsigned code to be run on the PS3 so developers can test out code... Sony just didn't count on the public getting hold of them.

So how many ban waves has MS done by now, hell many of those pirates help the xbox 360 installed bases, since once they are ban they sell the unit cheap, and get a new 360 and hack it again with a new firmare,as of right now pirates are playing on live, just wait for the Halo Reach ban wave, and see how hardware sales rise, when pretty much any one who want to play Halo has a 360 by now.

Err... as far as I'm aware firmware updates replace the old firmware. They don't just keep adding another firmware layer on top. :/

Makes you wonder why Sony removed OtherOS when that didn't stop anything. Now another update to try to stop something again. It's just a matter of time until someone figures a way around it. Expect more mandatory updates from Sony.

My internet is much slower, and it takes me between 12 and 24 hours to get these ridiculous updates. With my slow connection I don't play online multi-player games, but I do like being able to download PS one games from the PS store, but in order to do that I have to have the stupid updates. And before you suggest I upgrade to a faster internet, I can't where I live.

What are you talking about? People with modded 360 don't use live, because once they get banned the console is practically useless - they can't sell it because not only it's not under warranty but it CANNOT BE USED. It's blocked. No one will buy a console like that.

WilliamRLBaker

The deeper levels of the system weren't opened up as far as I'm aware.

A Chinese company managed to get a hold of a USB dongle, from which they were able to determine an exploit that would allow them to force a debug mode and allow the running of unsigned code.

They used parts of a leaked older version of Sony's SDK to produce a "backup" manager (yeah right). This was reverse engineered and made publically available.

There's nothing to confirm that from the ability to run unsigned code the l33t h4x0rs will be able to generate custom firmware or anything of the like. And they've all been too busy it seems trying to put this exploit onto as many things as possible for some reason, from calculators to iPhones.

I think you're in the wrong forum section then. :P

But you're right, this is only about the PS3 and it's monthly or so updates and how they removed OS features and have mandatory updates for every single PS3 owner just to try to stop isolated hackers.

this isn't a sales thread dude, keep your baseless assumptions out of it, besides, the same thing will happen with the Ps3 now, you think this is the end of it? i highly doubt it, but i won't be using the same baseless argument to discredit the Ps3's install base.

Wasn't BC PS2 games proven to exist on PS3 ages ago? I remember their being an HDloader exploit that allowed you to play PS2 games. But to be honest, only a small percentage of people using this dongle would want homebrew /ps2 compatiblility. The rest wants to play pirate games. So for sony to update their firmware every so often, i wouldn't really mind. Hated the fact that PSP had so many updates tho, was a pain in the ass because it had to be plugged into the mains and connected to the net to update.

PS2 games? Good luck emulation on Cell. If Sony wont do it, no annoying hackers will. I hope Sony stops these thieves. Ban everyone who ever uses that thing.

So how many ban waves has MS done by now, hell many of those pirates help the xbox 360 installed bases, since once they are ban they sell the unit cheap, and get a new 360 and hack it again with a new firmare,as of right now pirates are playing on live, just wait for the Halo Reach ban wave, and see how hardware sales rise, when pretty much any one who want to play Halo has a 360 by now.

i don't know, how many ban waves has MS done now? and since you've made this argument, do you have some numbers on hardware sales spikes after a ban wave? i'm curious if you have any evidence to back this idea.

[QUOTE="Chris_Williams"][QUOTE="Bigboi500"]Yes that's a universal formula for all users right, because we all have blazing fast interent?

All these updates really screw over the 20 GB PS3 users because the updates are always around 160+ MB. At this rate it's gonna force those PS3 owners to upgrade their HDDs. It's sad when a generation is FORCED to upgrade their CONSOLES just to get by these days.

the internet in my dorm sucks and it took less than two minutes for me, you know you can just upgrade your hdd and not your console right?

If you would have read my comment correctly, you'd have seen that's what I said.

12-24 hours for an update? Downloading PS1 games must be a several day affair...

Slashkice

Updating the firmware has been sped up though. I forget when they changed it, but they're doing patches now. It'll still vary depending on your internet connection, but you won't have to download 160+ MB files anymore - this particular update is just 33 MB.

Not sure where you got that info because I'm downloading it now, and it says 167 MB.
