I guess the original Half Life to an extent. You spend quite a while expecting to be rescued by the Military and then find out that they're purely on cleanup duty, and that includes all surviving members of the black mesa Staff.

My gosh, lostrib, f*ck off.
If you hadn't felt the need to be such a jackass about it, none of this would have happened
Whichever America he meant is a continent, therefore what I had said is applicable. Besides America basically can be considered as a continent by itself formed by two sub-continents. In spanish wikipedia, it's even defined as a single continent. Sometimes you need to stop arguing over nothing.
Actually, the America he meant is the United States of America, which is not a continent
But I have a harder question
Any games where Russia is the good guy?
Pretty sure they were in one of the Ace Combats.
Not the protagonists, though.
I think examples of both would mostly be found in Japanese games.
That's sad. Nobody likes us sniff sniff. I am of Russian origin myself, and every time I meet a Russian character in a game he tries to kill, rob or even rape the game protagonist lol.

Where here comes the joke. As he didn't specify which America, I intentionally supposed he's talking about North America. The intention of the joke is to show that not everything is about the US.

Well there's the problem right there.
Try MGR. The villain is a US senator. Representative of congress.
That doesn't count.. It always embodies a shadowy organization within the government who are the actual bad guys.. As a American I wouldn't mind it, its a fictitious game meant for entertainment value.. The only thing I see from that is it would give developers more ideas, settings, and variety to work with..
Like real life, America is never the bad guy. We are the embodiment of freedom and all that is good in the world.
LOL

Then explain Kanye West.
Cant I just get within 300m of him and have some fun?
It's hard to make the US the bad guy when the military might of the US is so lopsided. It already takes a hilarious amount of fiction just to build up another nation or power in the world that can somehow contend with the US. It's kind of a logistics thing.
Also, one of the primary markets for games is the US, so it's hard to pain the entirety of the nation as the badguy and somehow still receive commercial success in the US market.
Generally you don't see democracies as the "evil" power in any game. That's why we don't see the British as the badguys in any game either. It's hard to paint a democracy as an evil entity. It's a lot easier to point fingers at dictatorships.
Lots of factors I guess.
I would love to play a WWII game from the German perspective in early WWII. Could be a lot of fun.
Agreed. While I do believe that MGR fits the bill. Someone said something to the effect that its only rogue elements and such but the same can be said about the English chick in Uncharted 3. She wasn't the entire British govt. The fact is the people who make many games are from democratic countries and no matter how dirty, and our Government is dirty, we do have freedoms other countries don't. But yes, I would play the blitzkrieg in a shooter.
Well Kevin Spacey is the bad guy in Advanced Warfare, and he is the president after all
He wasn't the president. He was a CEO of the largest military private company like Blackwaters or something.
MW2, General Shephard is the main enemy of that game and he forces the army to create a war with Russia by slaughtering innocent Russians and other Americans. Heck you play as Soap a British soldier who kills him, the final act has no good guy Americans after Roach dies (I believe he was American).

Ok, it doesn't count to you. It does to me. The guy was a US senator in the game. That wouldn't shine well on Congress if it was a real occurrence and the excuse was, "It's just one guy, a shadow element". I guess the question is then describe how the entire US government and population can be the bad guy. Because there are so many in our democratic set up, unless every single member is in unison the bad guy, its always a rogue element.

I'm pretty sure in the early COD's I played as Russian soldiers fighting Nazi Germany in the battle of Stalingrad.

Oh yes. In COD 1 and 2 Russians were presented in quite a good light. And after that, in COD 4, russians betray, if I remeber right. In World At War they weren´t the bad, but they did have some dark moments like vengeance and all. And in COD 6 they invade the US , lol.
I wish there was, but there would be a protest if the American military was made to look evil in a real world style, not futuristic etc. I like the idea though.
you should watch movie avatar they made the army look like USA Marines and they made kevin spacey an american businessman with a blackwater type USA for sale army
yes they do make usa look bad in these movies as you root for people killing them
What about CoD when you has to massacre innocent people in that Russian Airport? I can remember pieces of that level but weren't you American?
Deus Ex 1 (realistically).
Probably a spoiler, but hey its so old who cares.
To be fair, most games where it turns out America is the Bad guy is a spoiler with itself.
Even Americans don't have any pride in America anymore. The founding fathers are rolling in their graves.
Along with all the Native Americans they killed and personally owned black slaves, presumably.
I could only imagine the field day someone like Fox News would have if there was a game that had the US as the bad guys and you could "kill" Americans...
not to stick up for fox news because i can't say i care for them, but i can see this being some dumbass liberal gamers wet dream. america has its faults, but she is a damn fine country overall. we as a whole should be more respectful to our own.
Red Alert depending on which country you choose.
Woah, woah, let's be honest here.
Nobody played allies in Red Alert.
I did lol.
@uninspiredcup: My comment didn't refer to racism so get off your fucking high horse.
Being from a member of the country "Scotland", our ancestors fought bravely against the English for the freedoms, as opposed to just migrating and taking it all. My heritage is very proud, and well deserved. While Americans took freedom, then boasted about giving it to the world, we genuinely did fight for freedoms, a true example of the human spirit.
If anything, video games should have Scottish heroes.
@Wasdie: If i remember rightly AC3 didn't exactly paint the British in a good light. Bar that you do get some very stereotypical British bad guys like in Uncharted 3 so we do get thrown in there sometimes. A bit like in movies really.

It did happen with Medal of Honour Warfighter, it was leaked that they'd call one of the sides in the online modes the Taliban and it got caught up by the press here in the UK pretty quick. Of course they caved and the Taliban were renamed "Opposition Forces".
If there was a story painting the US as an oppressor they'd have a shit fit i reckon.
Definitely.
There are not very many, because mainstream media must apologize for all of the crimes of American imperialism or come under fire from "critics." Because of this, these conceptions dominate popular consciousness. Today the propaganda is becoming increasingly ridiculous and full of falsification.
But I have a harder question
Any games where Russia is the good guy?
It's a lot easier.
Hell, every CoD set in WW2 has Russians as the good guys.
Oh, you know, because they fucking won the war against Nazi Germany (the surrender was to the Soviet Union).
More examples of historical revisionism in US education: obfuscating WW2.
Actually there is a game where the US is the bad guy.
*Spoilers*
The first Metal Gear Solid. You're being sent to kill terrorists who really just want to heal their soldiers. Instead you kill them, including using biological warfare to deliver FoxDie and when it was done the Secretary of Defense was going to Labamba the whole thing to hell. On top of that they were developing one of the most devastating weapons in human history and did everything to hide it. But instead they continued to make them in MGS2. So there you go.

If you read the events about the German surrender, Germany surrendered to the Allies at the Western Front first (signing the documents of surrender) followed by a similar signing with the Soviets a day later.
I mentioned MS Combat Flight Simulator 2 where the player can choose the IJN or IJA to play against US forces in teh singleplayer campaign.
In Combat Flight Simulator 3, the player can choose the Luftwaffe and play against the USAAF and RAF.
In Battlefield 1942, I recall playing as Germans in the Omaha Beach map. I also played as Japanese in several island maps (Iwo Jima, Wake).
There's tons. Any mob game and just look back to many 80s and 90s arcade style games. Metal Gear Solid series is a more recent example.
Rainbow Six: Patriots was about a domestic terrorist group who target and execute people on behalf of victims of what they considered Wall Street corruption. Basically an armed militia group that evolved from the Occupy Wall Street protests. It's a shame that it got cancelled because a game dealing with domestic terrorism is something new and Ubisoft Montreal is a talented studio, so at worst the result would have triggered some interesting discussion in the industry.

Are you mad?
Have you played a recent Ubisoft Rainbow Six game? Shit would have handled with the same amount of grace as a Marvel flick.
