I know I'll be called a heretic, but I prefer the latest ones. Honestly, its nostalgia that keeps the fanboys loving the old Fallout games and hating the new ones. Fallout 3 I'll concede has plenty of differences in atmosphere, but in general its the better game and was much more enjoyable for me.
To be fair I played the first 2 a little later so they were a bit more dated when I got to them.
I'd have to agree. Fallout 3 is great, and it's what got me into the series, but it doesn't really hold a candle to the first two. I bought FO1 and 2 from GOG and enjoyed them both much more than FO3. Despite being in 3D, FO3 just isn't as addicting and doesn't do as good of a job of drawing the player into the world, partly because of Black Isle's excellent writing and 2D leaving a lot more to the imagination. Also, Fallout 3's RPG mechanics just feel a bit dumbed down in comparison, though it's more of an ARPG so it's sort of understandable

Eh, not really. I bought both after FO3 and still enjoyed them more. Though, the change between 1 and 2 to 3 is so radical that it's really a matter of preference. FO3 is still a downgrade in some areas, but a sidegrade in others.
I like the idea of fraction rep being the indicator of the ending instead of the karma system. It reminds me a lot of how New Reno's ending changes depending on who you work for in Fallout 2. And I wonder if you can marry in New Vegas like you could in Fallout 2 (even if it was against your will).

The guy in charge of new Reno is actually now the lead developer of New Vegas, so its not surprising they share a lot of design elements.
Any Fallout fan should read the Van Buren design files though, its a shame it never came out because they had some really, really good ideas.

That's why I think New Vegas has a decent chance of living up to Fallout 1 and 2. And it was mighty sad that Van Buren's ideas were wasted all those years. I kinda hope that Beth would sponsor the project as well, but with the lawsuit and all I don't see that happening.
Yes, I prefer either of those games to Fallout 3, and I prefer Fallout 1 to Fallout 2, by a wide margin.
But Fallout 1 and 2 were made by the same devs from Fallout New Vegas ;)

No, that isn't true.
The original creators of Fallout (Tim Cain, Jason Anderson, and Leonard Boyarsky) ended up founding Troika, a studio which, in its brief existence, released three games that are each better than anything Obsidian has ever done (hell, Arcanum might very well be the best RPG ever made; it's only real competition in that regard is Fallout 1, a game which these gentlemen were also responsible for).
In other words, the proof is in the pudding. Compare Troika's oeuvre to Obsidian's and you'll see where the talent behind Fallout went.
I hope he's not ban-dodging because if he is he's going about it in the absolute worst and most obvious way.
Ive tried playing the older games and i cant do it. Im sure the story would be better in Fallout 1 and 2 because the story in Fallout 3 sucked, but the gameplay is so much better than the originals.
To each there own I guess. Fallout 1 and 2 had more tactical combat. It's funny how people like to disconnect things like dialogue and writing from the gameplay...which is somewhat idiotic, given that the dialogue/writing is an element to the game itself.I mean, you can avoid combat by using dialogue...how is that not gameplay?
heck yes i totally agree. i keep telling my friends that fallout 1 and 2 are beyond better! they said they never played 1 and 2. soon as i showed them what 1 and 2 look like they instantly said "that looks like it sucks". sigh....
btw the ones who said that are extremely casual gamers
The world in the first 2 were far more believable and more enjoyable to explore then Fallout 3. Fallout 3 felt like Oblivion with a Post-Apo setting and felt too Hollywoodized imo. I'm hoping Obsidian can bring the bleakness back to the Fallout universe. Plus the story and characters were far superior.
I do. The graphics and all are nice but the story is 10X better in the first two. I am also a chess genius so that made the first two easy for me.Fallout3dog
I can't speak about Fallout NV because it is not out yet.
I love the story of Fallout one and two though I hated the time limit. Fallout 3 fixed this major problem. I love the series equally.
For things like story, decision and consequences and other rpg elements. I prefer the classics but F3 had more action (considering the first 2 were turn based). Though its not at all surprising that F3 lacked in certain rpg aspects considering Bethesda was always about the action and what not.
Haven't played New Vegas so I really can't comment on that I probably won't get it till the holidays anyway.
No, not really. The leads from Fallout 1 left shortly after FO2 production began. So New Vegas is being made by devs who made Fallout 2 and were working on canceled Fallout 3.But Fallout 1 and 2 were made by the same devs from Fallout New Vegas ;)

They were not canceled for Fallout 3 it was a different company.

He's referring to the original Fallout 3 aka Fallout Van Buren, it was before Bethesda bought the ip.
