I am definitely more of a hermit than console gamer so I do know I have my biases.  However, each gen I have always purchased every console.  I started gaming with the original NES and have had the NES, Snes, genesis, Sega CD, Turbographics 16, Turbo Express (with TV turner..rawr), Sega Saturn, N64, 3DO, Phillips CD-I, Dreamcast, PS1,PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Vita, Gameboy, GBA, 3DS, and Lynx (and probably forgot something too).

So I am NOT against console gaming.  However, I am really debating if I am going to get involved next gen.  I MAY just purchase 1 console as opposed to both xbox One, Ninty and PS4.  I am leaning toward a ps4 but as of now I have NO interest in the system.

It seems like both Sony and MS are going for a more multimedia/casual approach.  While this is fine and to be expected with the way gaming is going, I have a media hub with my PC already and am well entrenched in Steam for online gaming, purchasing and storing my library of games.  I will miss out on some exclusives but this is the first generation I have not been excited about reading and anticipating.  If I do purchase a system, it's going to be for the very first time..not on launch day.

Anyone else in the same boat as me?

I still might get Wii U for Nintendo games when its cheap as hell. I'm worried about the direction of the other two though.

I don't see a point in owning a console if

1. You play almost every multiplat on PC

2. You don't care that much about exclusives

I think being a Steamho is a perfectly valid way to game that doesn't really require anything else to get the "full experience" of gaming (other than maybe an Origin account to buy ME3 and such.)

Call me crazy but there was always just something about the 360 that made me want to play multiplats on it. Like I'll start Mass Effect on my PC, and I just don't feel like playing it. But if I run over to my 360 and start it up, I can't /stop/ playing it. Maybe it's some psychological thing but everything I wrote above still stands, on a logical basis.

It's not that I dislike consoles. It's just that on the PC there are so many games to play. I'm never faced with a drought, so I don't need to fill in slow periods with a different system that might have an exclusive or two during that period.

With consoles you can go months between exclusives to play, but on PC there are new ones every day, so the value I've placed on new consoles isn't very high.

I have already decided not to get a PS4 or Xbox One. Wii U, 3DS, Vita, and PC will be it for this generation. And this is coming from someone who NEVER skips a console. Most of us don't have enough time for all that. And regardless of whether its console or PC, there's always something to play.

I'll most likely not get one. I don't feel getting a console for a couple of exclusives justifies the price of the console, especially when for the same price I can build a little pc that'll be close or better in terms of hardware while providing a lot more value and flexibility. Maybe when they are cheaper down the road I will pick one up for the exclusives, but that'll be years down the road. PC is where its at.

Obviously I'll wait for E3 but I'm like 99% to get a PS4 and later at some point Wii U when more games are available!

Exactly how I feel... if I am to get one of the next gen consoles, it'll be late into its lifecycle when it drops in price and establishes a worthwhile library of exclusives and console multiplats. It's what I did with the PS3 this gen...

I will not be getting a next gen console in the foreseeable future. I mainly game on PC, so steam sales create a large, albeit low-cost, backlog. Also, I just picked up a 3DS off ebay, so I have that to play, as well. As right now, if I do get a next gen console down the road, it will be Wii U. I expect its game library to strengthen considerable in the next two years.

Like most I'm waiting on E3 before I start leaning toward any console.

Even then I'll probably wait a year or so before actually getting any of them.:P

I'm looking to move back to Sony and pick up a PS4. I have a PS3, but I spent most of my gaming time on the 360 this gen because it's what everyone I know went for, and I regret it, I don't care about the fact I had to pay for online, or anything like that, but this gen is the first time in my life I've actually ended up been sick and bored of gaming, and I put it down to the 360 and Microsoft. So I don't care what my friends do this time, I'm gonna go back home to Sony, I'd rather enjoy gaming in private than despise it in company.

Too bad if you don't, you won't be able to be a essential part of the debates on SW, and will continue to have to sit on the outskirts looking in.

I actually have thought about going PC instead. That way I would be able to use that sexy new Xbox One controller and have great specs as well. Then there's also the great deals that Steam runs. But I know I won't end up doing it. I've thought about it in the past and never did it then either. The huge amount of money you have to pay up front (When I go to Ibuypower and mess around with their configurator I always end up putting together a PC that is around $1,500. If I have to go with lower tech than that then I won't even end up bothering) and the impending hassle of having to deal with drivers and just the glitchiness of PCs in general always ends up deterring me.

I remember feeling the same way. Before I started PC gaming, I had the same concerns and reservations about the cost, but I wish I knew then what I know now. I have never had a problem with video card drivers (yes, I have an AMD card). I think in general, problems with drivers and "glitchiness: of PCs is overblown. Moreover, take the time to learn about the components of PCs and then build your own. You WILL save money, and if your like me you will enjoy knowing more about technology in general. Anyways, I will be getting an X1 controller, as well. They look darn good.

I'll stick to my PC (sorry, but I live 60fps), but I'll get a console (probably PS4) after one of them builds up a nice lineup of exclusives and the console drops in price. I can't justify spending $500 on a new console when I know that money could be used to buy a badass 780.

You seen the rumored specs for the 8970 from AMD? Better than Nvidia's 780.

i'm not spending a penny over $300 for either of them so I guess I'll be waiting till the price drops. And even if I do get one it will probably be the Xone because it actually does things my PC can't. Unless the PS4 has some must play games of course. But that all remains to be seen.

I won't get any game console that charges you a fee to play used games or has any form of DRM. That's really my only beef. I don't care about "always online" as I have a steady ISP. Hopefully the online fees will be cheaper or free, but I have a feeling everyone will have to pay. We'll see how that turns out.

But you will pay a fee to get behind a paywall to use services that you already pay for like Netlfix or Hulu Plus?

They don't charge you a fee to buy used games. They charge the retailer a fee. Big difference.

People have the misconception that paying for a service somehow makes it better. While its sad, its great marketing PR from the boys & girls over at Microsoft.

What, are you 4 years old? You think those retailers just eat the difference? Bad news for you man...those costs just get passed on to you. So...no difference at all to the end user, just a difference in the means of that end.

Seriously. I fail to see why people have to pay for XBL to begin with. It'd be as ridiculous as me paying for steam.

I want the ps4 but if during E3 we see gameplay and some games run in 720p or without anti-alliasing/shitty FXAA and nothing looks impressive overall i will kinda lose interest. I mean, what's the point of buying a console that will serve you 5+ years if its less powerful than a 09 gaming rig? So my money is on E3.

I have already decided not to get a PS4 or Xbox One. Wii U, 3DS, Vita, and PC will be it for this generation. And this is coming from someone who NEVER skips a console. Seriously, I own:
Atari 2600 (Heavy Sixer) Atari 2600 (Four Switch Woody) Atari 5200 (four port model) Atari 7800 Atari Jaguar Atari Jaguar CD Atari Flashback 2 Atari Flashback 2+ Atari Lynx II Mattel Intellivision (model one) Mattel Hyperscan Colecovision Coleco Sonic (basically a Game Gear clone with some games built in) NES (frontloader) Super Nintendo (first model) w/Super Game Boy Nintendo 64 Gamecube w/Game Boy Player Wii (two white ones) Wii U 32 GB Game Boy (original model, at least three) Game Boy Pocket (red) Game Boy Light (silver) Game Boy Color (clear purple) Game Boy Advance (white) Game Boy Advance SP Mk 1 (one blue, one white) Game Boy micro Nintendo DS (launch silver and electric blue) Nintendo DS Lite (white) Nintendo DSi (black) Nintendo 3DS (launch black) Pokemon Mini (Chikorita Green) Virtual Boy SEGA Master System (US Model 1) SEGA Genesis (model 1) SEGA Genesis (model 2) SEGA CD (model 2) SEGA 32X SEGA Saturn SEGA Dreamcast (one launch, one black SEGA Sports Edition) SEGA Game Gear (black) SEGA Nomad Playstation PS One Playstation 2 (fat) Playstation 3 80 GB (2 USB) PSP 2000 (silver) PSP 3000 (silver) PS Vita 3G Xbox (one Thomson drive, one Hitachi) Xbox 360 S 4 GB black w/my own HDD Turbografx-16 Turbo Express Nokia N-Gage QD Neo Geo MVS 1 slot cab w/UNIBIOS Neo Geo CD (toploader) Neo Geo Pocket Color (clear) Bandai Wonderswan Color (pink) Magnavox Odyssey 2 CD-i (a portable LG model) Vectrex Goldstar 3DO Game King, Mee, other various Chinese clones
famicommander

Nope. Not upgrading my PC. Going to be using one of the consoles as my primary gaming device. I'll miss KB/M for fps though.

The X! rumors for used games need to be explained better. If MS decides to go full out DRM crazy then I might have to pass. I want to be able to rent/lend and borrow games, if Ms and Sony want to take that away, then I may just have to stick with Nintendo and PC.
