I like it most of the time. The only thing I never liked about it is if feels a looks like you are running/walking on ice. In L4D2 I can never quite tell where the zombies are going to end up.

Sounds like lag and not the engine, I've only ever had then when playing L20D. My gripe with the source engine is the way models look a bit "waxy". You don't notice in TF2 thankfully because of the art style but in L4D everyone looks a bit too shiny.

Old engine that needs a big overhaul IMO. Its pretty old and outdated I think. Never did like the visuals from it. Every game "feels" the same with a different coat of paint so to speak.

I have no gripes with the source engine, I love it... well actually I wish a few more things were done in real time to speed up map compiling. The engine is just so optimized and perfect lol.

I like the source engine. The games have a sharp and clean look unlike the unreal engine. Although it is showing its age. Who knows what Valve will bring with HL3 and the new engine, source at the time was amazing.

When reloading a weapon, you need to wait for the entire animation to finish before you can shoot. Most modern shooters will count the reload when the clip enters the gun before the animation ends.

No...not really.

They look artsy. Thats it. Portal 2 may change my opinion a bit but still doesn't look amazing. Runs really damn well though.

It didn't feel alive.AncientDozer

I agree. I find the source engine to feel incredibly sterile and lacking personality, it just doesn't feel alive. It feels so artificial.

Nah, whenever you minimize a source game it freaks out and then.... hl2.exe error.

Unless the epic load times in HL2 are anything to do with Source, I don't have any problems.

Bingo.

It doesn't always crash, but it has a good chance of crashing on older hardware. Even on newer hardware it can lock up.

It was a great engine and I have nothing bad to say about it, especially since I can't be sure if the shortcomings are down to the engine or the devs. But either way it's old now and been used too much, devs have made a great effort in creating different styles from TF2 to something like Zeno Clash, but there's always that familiar feel to it.

Sure, it's outdated now, but to say you never liked the visuals is crazy talk. The source engine was an entire generation ahead of most of the competition when it released, and it is very easy to run. I can't think of any other engine that can even come close to the optimization of the source engine.

They look artsy. Thats it. Portal 2 may change my opinion a bit but still doesn't look amazing. Runs really damn well though.

It's subjective I guess. I'll admit, it's no graphical powerhouse, but it's more stable than engines like the Unreal engine, the user knowledge base is vast, and it's extremely versatile. Considering it's more than 7 years old now, it looks pretty damn good if you ask me. Yes, it may be lacking in some of the really special effects that games like Metro 2033 or Crysis 2, but who really needs parallax and light occlumence and shader model 4.0?

Me and my fellow graphical whores. Now excuse me while I put my monocle and top-hat back on while lighting up the pipe. G'day gentlemen, I rather enjoyed this pleasent conversation we engaged in.

And that one game by the Mirror's Edge guy is pretty damn good looking for Source. I just like to nit-pick visuals though

It could use some better lighting for static meshes, and valve needs to fix the model compilers.

no problems... i had an issue with cs:s when it first came out.. with a bit of lag and WAY TOO easy kills (i blamed the engine for that)
