Anyone Jumping into Nier: Automata without playing Nier?

Nier is actually getting a sequel. It's a weird game. The music is beautiful. The story and characters are intriguing, but as a game, it kinda sucks, save for the fishing mini-game, because the theme is so good.

But it never got much discussion here. There were a few that played it, some enjoyed it, others thought it was shite. Normal stuff. But Automata is happening. Was announced for Ps4 only first, but now it's also coming to Steam, which means more people will get to play it.

But this is a question aimed towards the people who haven't played the first one, and maybe not even one of the Drakengard games. What do you think about this game? Do you feel inclined to go through the first one? Should they release the first one on Steam?

No. I've played Nier, I've loved Nier, and I wanted more Nier.

And I am ELATED it's getting a PC release and I won't be forced to buy a console I don't want for a single game.

I believe Nier is 10 bucks on sale on ps3. I think.

@wolverine4262: Only the japanese version is different. I pefer daddy nier, which is "our" version

NTSC are the same. Only JP versions are different. PS3 is Brother Nier and 360 Nier (which is NTSC Nier) is Daddy Nier. Other than that, there is no difference.

I don't think Automata is actually a sequel, just a game set in the same universe. Gameplay looks to be dramatically different too. I liked the first game and will probably pick this one up too though it looks like it may be a little too frantic action-oriented for me.

Ok thanks guys. For some reason the 360 version is a lot cheaper so I'm going with that whenever I get to the mall. And maybe it'll show up on the bc list when the new one comes out.

Nier is a flawed gem. If you love Automata, that will be a good sign that you'll like Nier as well. That's how I would approach it. Play Automata first

Also if you play Nier, there is a text segment of the game that is really bad and you should just cheat at that part.

It's probably a sequel insomuch as Nier is a sequel is to Drakengard. Same universe, but following only a single ending of a branching storyline.

I honestly hope this game comes with a re-release of the first game i.e. Bayonetta. Even if it's just a straight port. I'd love to not have to dig out my 360 to play it again.

Well by not playing, do you mean not finishing? I played the first Nier but never finished that wonky defecation.

It was quite popular on 360 I'm surprised it hasn't made it as a BC title on Xbox One yet. I would have thought it would get a lot of votes. I got it on 360 too over PS3 so I could install it to HD, great game though some people seemed to hate it. Their loss.

No, I plan on finishing the first game. Not fond of the gameplay in the first game though so far.

Other than music and characters, the game is decidedly average, so it's no surprise that some people hate it. It was one of a very few games that is good because of the sum of it's parts makes for a very unique experience, but many of it's parts are incredibly flawed.

It's one of those games, much like Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, at least for me, that when people talk about it, I get this very great urge to get the 360 out and play it again. I only finished the game through once, and it has four endings, but I've played it several times other than that.

Yeah Nier is an odd mish-mash of playstyles and throws in some really weird sections sometimes at random but it definitely has its own charm. I keep the 360 for Lost Odyssey which I've never finished, the combat gets too repetitive eventually but I keep going back and starting again.

I'll probably be getting this game day 1, and no I have no desire to play the first one.

I checked out a couple of demos and liked what I saw.

Well, it looks interesting, and Platinum is a developer I respect, but I'm not sure about "jumping in" just yet. I'm going to wait for reviews.

But if I do jump in, it's not like I would have much of a choice; Nier never made it to PC.

I heard it's coming to PC so if the PC version is up to snuff I'm probably going to check it out.

I hated Nier, it was so boring. This new title looks interessting, not sure wheter I should buy it or not :S

I don't think there's anything to gain in finishing the first game. It's not like the old characters are carrying over into this sequel. It looks like it's going to be its own completely different thing.
