I just wish they would drop the scores altogether. People look at the numbers without even reading the text.

Yeah, I do actually. I thought the change to this .5 system makes the rating of the games too broad, while the old-system allowed people to see how games matched up (same genre-wise, and overall value-wise) when you need to make decisions as to what purchase would best suit you. Nowadays you see two games rated 9.0 and have to resort to the opinions of the people that copped to make choices. The forums are becoming more useful to consumers than actual reviews.

I agree. The text is the important part, not the stupid little number at the top of the page.

I started playing fps with wolfenstein in 1992/doom in 1993 moved onto rise of the triad in 1994, duke nukem 3d 1996, quake 1 later in 1996, quake 2 in 1997,shadow warrior,97 so on. but when i think crysis's level design sucks ass or even call of duty 4 i think you got a problem with the genre

0.1 - 0.4 difference in scores was unncessary and it compromises the integrity of a review score.

Is there really a difference between an 8.9 and a 9.0? Who's to say what worths a 0.1 and whats not? Opinions vary too much for a score that precise.

It was better but it wasn't such a significant loss as to make me miss it or anything. I mean really, could you honestly say you could tell the difference between a 9.4 and a 9.5. It's so insignificant it really doesn't matter.

Not really. I usually rate games by whole or half numbers anyway. I don't think it should really be THAT technical to score a game. (Honestly, is a .2 really going to impact the overall quality than just a solid number or .5?) It makes more sense, IMO.

Yeah he is!!! His sacred 2 review started out with him straight up bashing the action rpg genre...he was like "who actually makes a hack and slash rpg in 2009" he then went on to bash every single convention of the genre, like it was the worst thing in the world...all things that made games like Diablo series titian quest and sacred series so great.... Then you want to see his gears 2 review nothing but praise, go to the resistance review and he nitpicks.... The guy does that to most ps3 games...and lets games like gears2 get a pass on it's flaws...yeah the halo3 review was like he was worshiping it like the second coming...

A scoring system with 100 different steps is kinda dumb imo. Its not rocket science, its simple opinion, having so many grades makes no sence.

Who seriously cares about some stupid reviews every now and then, they have nothing to do with the system?

The worst review ever on gamespot has already been made, look at this:

http://www.gamespot.com/saturn/action/mrbones/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary;read-review

The review text makes it a 10.0 game, thats far from the score though.

No scoring system will ever make up for dumb reviews, no matter what it is.

I know this is an old example but anyway.

Madden 08 on the PS3 and 360. The 360 version ran at 60fps which is a big deal for me and the PS3 at 30. They both scored 8.5. They did not thing it was worth a .5 difference (i do) however if they were on the old system they could have easily scored it 8.3 or 8.4.

I think the new system is good in that it will actually make you read the review to see the differences like that. However the truth is most people dont look at the main text and just the score giving the perception that they are equal. When clearly they were not.

Edge uses the scale properly, too.

The new scoring system is better. It's still not there yet, but it's getting there. After all, a review is just a recommendation. How many different ways do you need to say, "Buy it now", "buy it", "rent it", "don't bother", "burn it with fire"?

I used to miss it, but the current one makes it more organized, and the differences, if the old scoring system is in play, would be little. Not to mention all the 8.9 FLOP threads that could arise with any AAA hyped game here.

The Biggest problem I have is that they made the change mid-generation. This makes earlier games incomparable to newer games. For example, PGR3 scored 8.8 and would appear to have been rated higher than PGR4 at 8.5, but they were measured on different scales.

Yeah you can only really do it like that if you have 4 or 5 smaller scores, like graphics, sound, gameplay, replay value and length, and then you add up those scores and then divide by 5, to get an aggregate, otherwise giving a game an 8.3 is kind of weird...

Because it's now in 0.5 increments, the rounding would be to the nearest 0.5 out of 10, so that would become 7.0 and 7.5

Yes I do. I have a feeling a lot of games are being overrated by gamespot with this system, which is not helping their credibility lately. basically what I'm saying is that it seems like it's been downhill for gamespot since the new scoring system. This is just my opinion of course.

Not at all. What is the quantifiable difference between an 8.4 and an 8.5? None that I can see. Do you really need 100 different ways of telling someone how good a game is? No. You need maybe 5, at the most.

That .1 difference between 8.9 and 9.0 is usually because the reviewer didn't feel like the game deserved AAA status or meritted with the "Editor's Choice".

No. Now they round it off and too many games are getting 10s and 9.5s. Plus the new reviewers suck.

EDIT: GameInformer has the best scoring system IMO.

Agree. It's so much simpler that way. But for what it is now I feel it's fine. The Good and Bad medals are great though. --- How can you possibly tell/determine the worth of a game down to increments of .1? You can't that's why they changed it most likely. --- I used to miss the old system, but it was unnecessary the more I thought about it. That's why Jeff went with just 5/5 for Giant Bomb and 1UP changed their system as well. --- People don't read yeah  :(. But it's a good thing most video reviews are words taken directly from the written text review.
