VG Chartz had the Wii at I think 24.25m units sold and Nintendo announced it had sold 25m units to date. Then Microsoft just announced it had sold 19m units as of today and VG Chartz had it at 18.25. That's like 500k-1m off. I don't think there is website that's any better than VGChartz with numbers sold as of now. Opinions?

It really isn't that hard to guess how much both have sold.

They correct their numbers every time official records are revealed.

And OVERALL numbers are fairly easy to estimate. It's the small-scale predictions which VGChartz gets widely wrong, i.e. when they say that this week the 360 sold 80,000 units, in actuality it could be anywhere from 80,000 to 150,000. The reason their overall numbers sometimes out to be fairly accurate is probably a combination of (a) regular recorrection, and (b) remarkably bad errors cancelling each other out.

And to add another point: it's easy to estimate in the millions. For the last month or so, most people here were saying that the 360 had sold "a little under 20 million units" before Microsoft ever announced official numbers, and most of those people never look or distrust VGChartz. Likewise, most people here have been saying that the Wii "has outsoldthe GameCube," again without referring to VGChartz or NPD.

I really don't feel like debating VG Chartz's accuracy, but 2 accurate sales chart is hardly proof of anything.

It is a joke for weekly sales. it corrects itself when proper numbers come out so for the overall picture its no that bad. But anyone on these forums could come as close using official numbers etc.

MS, Sony and Nintendo's official numbers always mean shipped, whereas VGchartz numbers mean sold. I think the 750,000 difference just means that roughly 750,000 consoles are sitting on the shelves waiting to be bought.

Exactly- when official nimbers are released they immediately change theirs to mirror official numbers - takes a lot of talent to pull that off.

uh... no. its almost impossible to follow ALL items sold to customers, especially a site like VGchartz, which isnt a real company anyway

I know VGchartz can't possibly be 100% accurate, I just mean they only count sold to customers not sold to retailers.

They TRY to.

Or rather, they CLAIM to.

I don't believe they do much else other than give a few corner shops a phone call every week.

Yeah, I don't know how they possibly manage to track WW sales every week. But they do correct their numbers over time when NPD and Famitsu figures are released, so I think they're fairly reliable for lifetime hardware numbers.

no they arent. they update their numbers once they are released from NPD and from the respective companies.

before the numbers come out, they just estimate. there was a thread yesterday showing how off they were with march numbers before npd came out

No one ever says that VGChartz is a bad site for compiled data. It's their weekly/monthly numbers that always get people riled up. I like using their auto-graphing feature a lot.

obviously their totals will be close as they can correct themselves on a semi-recent basis - it's all the other numbers that have been proven to be total crap week after week.

no, it isn't. they just change their numbers after the NPD's come out and they get proven wrong. practically every prediction they make for monthly sales is wrong.
