anyone thinks Sony's ps3 slim design is destroying them?

Don't get me wrong, I like the way the ps3 slim looks. But now that the xbox 360 slim looks way more "high end". The ps3 just loses appeal to the average consumer. by average, i mean people who do not completely do their research and buy a system base on functionallity (those people who shops at walmart who never read reviews online). They lean toward the 360 because it LOOKS like it is a better system. The original ps3 would stand its ground against the 360 slim right now in terms of looking high end. soI predict sony will come up with a ps3 slim 2 some where in the future. with an improved look. agree?

I don't think the average person is as stupid as you're making out. These days everything is just a box under your TV. I don't think anyone really cares how they look.

I'm not saying that it ENTIRELY affects their decision, they lean toward the system. they both cost the same, almost the same functionallity except ps3 has bluray. I think looks would somewhat affects the desicion.

I think that if you're making the assumption that something as cosmetic as looks can determine who buys what, I think it's fair to say that Playstation's brand name would hold more weight when it comes to what people choose. I don't think their design is damaging them at all.

honestly, some consumers are pretty ill informed. My friend works at Blockbuster and he has to ask everyone who rent bluray discs if they have a bluray player. why? because they have gotten so many complaints that the disc wouldnt work in their dvd player.

Why do haters always assume that people who buy the 360 are "uninformed" and "naive".. The XB 360 has been on the market for nearly 5 years. And during that time it has amassed a VERY large library of quality software. Maybe.. Just Maybe.. consumers are wise enough to see this and base their decision on that as opposed to a glossy finish. :|

[QUOTE="mysterj"]No one would buy a $300 hardware because of looks. Average consumers aren't that retarded. AdmiralBison

It's not retarded to get something that looks aesthetically pleasing. regardless of the product or price comparrisons.

There was a poll here that mentioned if graphics/looks mattered over gameplay and well..

presentation, form factor, art and design can have an effect as well especially when choosing between comparable products and services.

Art sells for millions of dollars a piece! ( I can't tell between a car crash and a Rembrandt to be honest)

people buy super car kits to place over their Toyota Yaris. :(

Models are always advertised near products that are not even related(sex sells)

some products are considered to have sex appeal!

If looks didn't matter then there wouldn't "teh graphics" king threads all over SW either.LOL

I agree with this person, looks means a lot, why would microsoft and sony put curves and glossy finish, chrome bar, nice circle power button that lights up. because it is appealing. Why would people choose a modern warfare 360 over the original? why would people choosecustomized console (final fantasy bundle, mgs4 bundle) over the regulardesign?why would the ps3 looks better than the ps2? Why do they redesign their consoles? why did people rage when they first saw the leaked pictures of the ps3 slim? well you guys get the point im trying to make.

The slim has the same plastic finish as the PS2 if I'm correct. I hate the glossy trend with consoles. While more attractive, they collect dust like crazy and fingerprints show on them way too easily. I hate piano black finish on any electronic.

Anti-Apple fanboys are as bad as Apple fanboys, I swear. I personally buy the laptops for the 9 hour batteries, and enclosure that craps all over any PC laptop. Portability and durability are #1 for me. Macbook Pros trump PC laptops in both categories. PCs as desktops however, are far better.

This is fine guys, I'm not disputing that. But how does this help your argument and not mine? If you're all saying that consumers are so naive that they'd buy something based on how it looks, surely it's just as reasonable to suggest that because they're so naive, they'd buy something just because they recognise the brand name, like Playstation - therefore making its looks irrelevant.

In fairness, the arguments balance eachother out if anything.

I as a consumer think the PS3 slim looks better than the 360 slim...I just invalidated your argument that was based on your opinion. Sony sure as heck didn't make the PS3 slim look "Low tech" it's rather sleek and slender especially compared to the beast the old system was, just becuase you prefer the 360 slim or THINK it looks better doesn't mean you represent the entirety of the populace, especially the market that you don't represent. Hardcore gamers probably don't care a whole lot about looks, casual consumers give it some thought or maybe even alot of thought, but assuming you know what looks better isn't your field of expertise unless you analyze Video game market trends and how the redesigns have effected sales outside of price point, did a few survies of the prospect market, did field research and ran it through marketing firms. Thats what Sony and MS did before they launched either Re-design so I'm sure the average consumer will be pretty attracted to either.

I actually think the average person is more stupid than he's making them out. No offense to the "average person" and in this case I mean, "ultra casual", but consumers buy on looks for sure. Not saying it makes up a large percentage of sales or anything but yeah, it helps.

to everyone who is saying the brand name will sell ps3. yes true. but that is wrong if sony actually think that. If they just say "oh it will sell because its sony" instead of making the best console they can for the money then they don't deserve the consumer's trust that they are given. brand name is important, but you have to live up to the expectation too. if youre going to have a machine as incredible as the ps3, might as well make it LOOKS like an incredible machine too. there is nothing wrong with how it looks right now. But there is no denying the 360 looks more appealling.

Yes, but again you're assuming that the extent of a consumer's naivity focuses primarily on the aesthetics of a product, which isn't true. I think just as many naive consumers would buy something simply because of its brand name (which has many of its own connotations) and not just because it looks nicer.

I absolutely agree with your last statement; my comments aren't pro Sony and I'm not suggesting Sony's brand name has a higher standard or appreciation. My point was simply that based on brand power, which is a staggering force in marketing and we're all subject to it, the PS3 slim design is unlikely to be "destroying" Sony, as you so eloquently put it. :)

ok fine, ill admit that using the word destroying might be a little much. I just think that they should try to make their system looks more appealling. I think it would help in making the casual consumers' choice a little easier. because they both have motion control coming soon.

You are stating that the Xbox360 Slim looks more appealing or Advanced, or whatever you are attempting to state as a fact. The truth is no-single person on SW here can disprove or prove your theory. Thus making your entire post pointless, your bassing your entire arguement on a very loose assumption that more people will buy 360slim because of it's looks. Then assuming Sony will respond by redesigning the PS-slim to what? have Spinning rims or something? Chrome finish? Glossy finish? What about the 360slim makes it more "Appealing" perhaps if you try and tell us why it's more appealing we can then begin a actuall discusion or come to an agreement but until then there really isn't a arguemnet about the 360slim selling more because of it's straight out design. There are too many variables to even single that out, we have price point, library, services offered, brand loyalty, consumer base, and asthetic design is pretty low on that list of reasons ANYONE buys a gaming system. Unless you have some way of proving it the burden of proof is always on the person attempting to make a point with it. Unless your just saying your entire arguement is just for us to "Agree that 360S could possibly look better in the consumers eyes and if this is true it will sell better to uninformed general consumers" But thats not your point at all.

Have you forgotten that "looking high end" is what almost destroyed them in the first place? It wasn't until they released the PS3 slim, and got rid of that terrible Spiderman font on the system and the games, that they started succeeding this generation.

First of all, Im not stating it as fact, I said it isfactIF there is more people out there who thinks the 360 looks more highend then the ps3 compare to the other way around. it is true that no one can disprove or prove my theory. but how does that make this pointless? if they can prove or disprove me then there is absolutely no room left for discussion. As for the redesign, I think thats what they will do. What will they do to make it better? i have no idea. Just like I had no idea what microsoft would make the 360 slim looks like. I have no idea what a company will do to improve their products but hey, they still do it.That leaves even more room for discussion.you have a pretty nice list of what can be done there. Your list of variables are also very good. price point: both slims cost 300 dollars the rest isnt what a casual or average consumer would think about, sure it might cross their mind at some point but not to a point where they will do a bunch of research on it. you, me and every one here knows exactly which system we want and all the functionallity of our system. but have you ever thought of the people who would buy a tv, a fridge, a stereo, a sound system because it has a nice color, the salesman suggested it, or it looks good. if you go to bestbuy there is a ton of people who reads the little card of specs and have no idea what its saying. Those are the kind of consumers im talking about. ones that might lean toward a system because of how it looks.

Have you forgotten that "looking high end" is what almost destroyed them in the first place? It wasn't until they released the PS3 slim, and got rid of that terrible Spiderman font on the system and the games, that they started succeeding this generation.

Bigboi500

ps3 started selling more because the lower price point. honestly could you count the number of times you read or hear this phrase " the ps3 is too expensive, I'll get one when the price comes down."

That's the point I was making. That's also when I got my PS3. The Spiderman font has nothing to do with anything, other than the fact that I hated it. :P

i see the point you are trying to make, but times have changed. price isnt a big factor anymore because they both cost the same. and obviously you know what system you want. so its looks wouldnt matter to you. youre not a clueless consumer.

'destroying' is ridiculously overdramatic.

the 360S stole a lot of the thunder the PS3 slim had, but Sony's gigantic increase from the piss-poor sales they were having with the previous PS3 is the better way to describe 'destroy'

well excuse me! i was trying to make the topic an attention grabber like all great writers do:P

I think sony's increase in sales was more because of the price and the advertisement campaign, not because of the more simpler design thus adding to my point that the ps3 slim's design is destro....... i mean not helping sony.

I don't think the average person is as stupid as you're making out. These days everything is just a box under your TV. I don't think anyone really cares how they look. Ninja-Hippo

He forgot that price and features come into the comparison as well (at least they should). I mean this is pretty basic stuff when buying... well anything :P Unless you're a millionaire. It's not all about the looks.

i didnt forget aobut anything, ps3 slim $300, 360 slim $300. pretty easy to decide which one to get base on price there... im being sarcastic.

features like i stated before, have you see those people who tries to read the specs card at bestbuy and has to ask the salesman everything. btw they have almost the same features except ps3 has bluray.

Yeah I've heard about them. I'm just used to do a lot of research before buying anything. Comparing the price and features, trying to get the best value for the x amount of cash I'm willing to use at the time. I can see a parent having a hard time choosing a gaming systems for their kids though. Blu-ray playback could be the deal breaker for a lot of consumers.

So can I say Microsoft should release a Xboxslim2 because if people like Sony's design better it should be redone? I still don't get what your going at. Yes I am fully aware the general consumer is pretty uninformed and lazy, sure they look at asthetics I'm just trying to figure out why you think the XboxS is better than the PS3S. Where does it come from other than you own opinion? if it's not from anywhere else your entire thread is based on a assumption.

The original ps3 would stand its ground against the 360 slim right now in terms of looking high end. soI predict sony will come up with a ps3 slim 2 some where in the future. with an improved look. agree?

gangster480
What the hell.no. we aren't magpies. And the miniscule amount of people buying the 360 because it *supposedly* looks better aren't going to sway the numbers. Seriously....
