I kind of am. I expected Sony to struggle because of the price but not like this.

I am surprised because they dominated the market so much last gen. You would think they would put the strategies they used with the PS2 into place with the PS3 but insted they went in the opposite direction. lucas_kellyOhsnap at your (accidental) spammage! :| But yeah um, one could say they DID take the same route like they did with the PS2. But that's not a good thing. Times change, the world changes, the same strategy that worked 10 years ago might not work again now. They went with BluRay because it is a new format, and that's how they won before, mainly because of the new DVD format. But it's just not time for that yet. Oh sony.

As a gamer who has witnessed the rise and fall of several console leaders, I must say the fall of Sony this gen is truely surprising. As gamers we all have console preferences based on the genre of games we enjoy playing. I have been on both sides of the fence where i supported consoles that were dominate in the market and others that failed miserably.
With the extreme price of the PS3 I figured it would just be a close 2nd place system making the systems wars this gen similar the to Sega Genesis/SNES era where being a manticore meant you had the best of both worlds. Both systems were equal and played off each other strengths....one port of a blockbuster game would be better on SNES while another hit would be better on the Genesis. Each system being equally great with its exclusives and never really gaining the 1up on each other. Unfortunately this wont happen between the PS3and the 360 this gen because of the constant missteps of Sony.
I didnt think Sony would implode the way it has with the PS3 project. The numerous errors Sony made this gen you would think this was their first attempt in the console race.
-They priced themselves out of competition
-Hyped the performance of their system beyond realm of simply promoting and selling a product...they flat out lied!!! (ex. hyped late Dreamcast performance, launched with late PS1 performance...big difference!!!)
-Launched with no software...you would think they would have learned by now to launch with games!!!
The list goes on and on, but overall I would have never guessed the biggest enemy to the Playstation franchise would be Sony...
Game On....

Yeah, but the PS2 was never a hulking beast of a system priced at double the price of the original Playstation.I have to agree... the only thing killing PS3 is Sony (not MS!)As a gamer who has witnessed the rise and fall of several console leaders, I must say the fall of Sony this gen is truely surprising. I was, $500 to 600 consoles do not have MAss appeal, it doesn't matter how much value you think is there all people know is that its the price of a generic PC and thats not a good thing.I kind of am. I expected Sony to struggle because of the price but not like this.

WOW $599 is too much for a piece of technology that is gonna stay in your home entertaining you every day without constant hardware issues for the next 4-6 years!!!. Everyone here is a gamer and if you enjoy doing it, isn't it justifiable spending that money a console that provides to your gaming needs? Sure, you might say that 360 is cheaper. But there's a reason for that. It's processor isn't as good, so is it's cooling.
Furthermore, Blue ray has more than double the storage capacity of hd dvd. Right now that's insignificant. But in maybe 2-3 years, games like gta could take advantage of this, and then 360 wouldn't be able to port the game due to it's inferior hd dvd's space.
Overall, it seems that the capabilities of the systems are the same. However, it is when the developers get more comfortable with the system that they unleash it's potential. This happens from maybe 1-2 years onwards and this is the case with ps3. John carmack himself, (he created doom 3 engine that won best technical achievement on gamespot) said that ps3 has a lot more power inside it. As for 360, do you seriously think that there is gonna be as much of a grapical improvement over the next years? Answer is no. So look at the long run. Not at how it is going right now.
