Are any ''hardcore'' gamers finding that they don't care as much these days?

A few years ago i would want to 100% any game i own, esp rpg's, but..i'm just don't care to invest SO much time in my gaming any more. I picked up Dark Souls, and while it's a beautiful game, i played it for about 30 minutes and...i just don't want to invest 60-70 hours in a video game any more. Esp one as time consuming and frustrating as DS. It just seems....easier and more...''fun'' to pick up and play a game that you can get some quick enjoyment out of like..BF3 or Batman.

Maybe i'm growing out of video games.

Hardcore gamers don't care. They devote themselves to the few games that make them happy, and that's that.

I've never cared about 100% any games and all of my friends would call me a "hardcore" gamer. As for investing lots of time, well if the story is going to take that long to beat I will beat it. I just won't be bothered to 100% it.

Most definitely.

I'm a former hardcore video gamer, and I'm starting to play small, independent games over mainstream titles.

I use my PS3 for PSN more than anything...I use my gaming PC for indie games on Steam...

Next gen I'm not going to buy any home console but the Wii U (for Nintendo 1st party)...I'm not going to upgrade my PC either. I've definitely fallen out of favor with "hardcore, mainstream" games.

Although I do still play the occasional hardcore game that dazzles me, like Dark Souls.

I would immediately become a hardcore gamer again if HL3 would just come out. There is 1 game in the universe I will play no matter the obstacle. I don't have any gaming anything right now.

I can relate, although I like the option of losing myself in a game rather than exchaning that for a few cheap thrills. Usually that comes from MP in games like CoD, Uncharted, and Gears, but others like Skyrim, Dark Souls, and Deus Ex mandate a larger investment for a bigger single-player pay-off.

BTW, don't expect a narrative whatsoever out of Dark Souls, it's nothing but a game with as close to no story as anything I've ever played.

Hardcore games aren't exclusive to or really prevalent in "mainstream" titles.

Of course!

I still love to play hardcore games.

It's hardcore, mainstream games that I've fallen out of favor with...like popular shooters or certain popular RTS games that end with -arcraft.

Hardcore and casual need to stop being used.. sSubZerOo

Why?

Hardcore = Games that have the potential to be difficult and are meant for experienced video game players

Example: Call of Duty, Mario

Casual = Games that are easy and are meant for people who don't usually play video games

Example: Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kinect

---

Casuals can play hardcore games, and hardcore gamers can play casual games.

Does that mean that Pokemon and Disgaea are hardcore? Because the pure mechanical crunch that goes along with those two titles is astounding.

Pretty much, actually. I find myself playing the big games as they come out but I don't feel interested in putting more than a few hours into them, and just go back to playing LoL and fighting games. That will most likely change in the next couple months though, as there are some games I've been waiting a long time for (such as Skyward Sword).

[QUOTE="sSubZerOo"]Hardcore and casual need to stop being used.. peterw007

Why?

Hardcore = Games that have the potential to be difficult and are meant for experienced video game players

Example: Call of Duty, Mario

People will disagree with you ON BOTH COUNTS.. Mario and Call of Duty are not some vastly complicated games, they can be picked up and played by ANY ONE..

Casual = Games that are easy and are meant for people who don't usually play video games

Example: Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kinect

HOW is Kirby's Epic Yarn, a platformer.. Casual but Mario isn't?

---

Casuals can play hardcore games, and hardcore gamers can play casual games.

How bout instead of the use of "hardcore" we can use terms that actually MAKE sense such as FUN, challenging, indepth/deep, complicated, etc etc.. Its actually pretty hilarious that you use Call of Duty especially, many MANY people on System wars believe its casual.. I on the other hand think its a video game.

I don't really like trying to decide which games make people hardcore or casual. Everybody has different gaming preferences, and in the end it's not the games that make a person hardcore or casual, it's the mentality of the gamers themselves. The amount of dedication to gaming and the industry itself determines whether a person is casual or hardcore, not the games they decide to play.

A game is a game, it shouldn't be divided into casual or hardcore, there's already the first party, third party category and of course the usual FPS,RPG,TPS ect ect and adding a unnecessary acronym is utterly pointless.

Gamers play games whether it's Super Mario,Starcraft 2,Gears of War 3 or Dark Souls.

Well, I'm certainly getting sick of searching for collectibles in every game now. It's only there as an easy and cheap way to increase a game's replay value.

Yeah... It was cool back in 2007 when Halo 3 had the skulls and terminals but now if you want all the achievements in a game you're almost guaranteed to have to go on some campaign long easter egg hunt with some youtube videos in hand.

In RPG's i'm still exploring and collecting everything in a game but i did notice that i'm losing interest into fps's and shooters in general (which was my fav genre not long ago). Dunno what's wrong, maybe cuz they're all the same these days? No perfect dark, golden eye, halo CE epicness... just ******g MW :(

I only go for 100% if the game itself persuades me, like with gameplay or enviroments, I explored every area of Fallout just to see the 50's inspired art and the dacay of the game world

I would be more apt to do the collectibles if the game kept track of the ones you already picked up. I never got the plat on AC:Brotherhood, because I wasn't about to re-scour the entire city for collectibles, since the map didn't say which ones I'd gotten already.

Those terms mean totally different things to different people and shouldn't even be used in general by anyone because of that.

I invest my time in games I love. Sometimes they might be new games. Most of the time, they aren't. Personally, I find myself caring less and less about consoles' big releases, and focusing more and more on handhelds.

That's where my money's going starting this holiday season: 3DS.

With games like DQIX on handhelds, it's not difficult to see why someone would play mostly handhelds.

Exactly. I've poured so much time into DQIX, I shock myself. What's more, the sheer amount of FUN I had working towards a party of totally kick-*** characters... I haven't been that dedicated to a game in a long, LONG time.

The beauty of the 3DS is, as I wait for the release of new games, I still have an extensive library of DS games to enjoy. When the Vita is released, I will wait for a drop in price and a few quality titles to invest in that device. Consoles for me will be a thing of the past.

I hear you. I'm eagerly awaiting alot of games, but I've still got several games I need to finish. And you know what they are. But, unlike you, there are still some games on consoles that really interest me. BTW, Radiant Historia is awesome so far. I'm on Chapter 2.

I'm not going to give up console gaming entirely, but it will take a backseat to handhelds for me. I'm still a diehard fan of Nintendo's first party titles, as well as numerous other franchises found exclusively on consoles. Like it or not, I will be console gaming next; I won't pass up on those games.

And awesome regarding RH. ;) Game only gets better as you press forward!

LOL way to prove his point with your rebuttal - CoD Hardcore? ...the hell? The phrases need to be dropped because people don't actually use them correctly. People just use 'casual' to describe games they don't like.

You know what would be awesome? Another Metroid game like super Metroid. I played it on the Virtual Console and I was amazed by how well it holds up and plays. That would be a day one purchase for me. I misunderstood you, though, I thought you were giving up consoles entirley.

And yeah, I really like the two timelines thing, and how politically charged RH is. Very compelling so far. Out of curiosity, there are like 10 chapters?

I find it a struggle to play a lot of JRPGs now. They just haven't advanced or done anything innovative for awhile. It's just a bunch of grinding and cliche story. I use to love playing JRPGs but when I try to play Persona 4, I get tired of the grinding and randomly generated dungeons. I feel myself forcing myself to finish these games.

I loved the atmosphere of Super Metroid, but preferred the sharper controls of Fusion, personally. I'd kill for another 2D Metroid on 3DS. Heck, I'm hyping Metroid Another M already! :P

No, only 6 chapters per timeline, and the final chapter which unites the two to form the True History.

I'll play any game there is that appeals to me, whether it takes 100 hours or 10. The longer games just take more time to get through than before. Responsibility happens, but I won't completely drop my hobby for it. Hobbies keep me sane.

Yeah, Metroid Fusion was great, but, looking back, it's a little disappointing how linear it was. still great, though. And yeah the controls were great!

Cool, thanks. BTW, have you heard of the game Solatorobo: Red the Hunter on DS? I want to get it soon. It's like an ARPG.

Rather then only playing games that are easy or hard I find myself only playing the cream of the crop. I don't have time to play "ok" games or search for hidden gems.

I just looked it up, but it isn't captivating me. So I'll pass on it. :P

The truth is, if you want gaming to remain interesting, you have to move with the times. With the physics improvements in gaming this gen, if you haven't been enjoying the action/adventure/sports genres then you're missing out. I've been gaming for 20 years - there was a time when RPGs were the be all and end all - FF6 and Baldur's Gate were the best games of the time, but that's because the best use of processing power was roll dice behind the screen - lots of dis. The day you were able to knock someone off a wall with your baseball bat in a realistic fashion in GTA4, gaming changed for good and it ain't going back.
