By cross genre games I mean games which incorporate aspects from different game genres. Like Borderlands which is a first person shooter with many role playing elements. We have games like Fallout 3/NV which are role playing games that use the first person shooter view however the combat is mainly VATS and the shooting controls are average at best.

So basically what I'm asking is do you think as people grow tired of the current genre's that we will begin to see games that successfully take aspects or fit completely into various genres?? I personally think it would be a great idea. Imagine say a Resistance game which is set in an open world and you play the role of somebody out in the wastelands on his own trying to survive/fight. There are many possibilities of cross genre games and I think it may be the only way to go in terms of innovation for games in the future.

i want to see a develloper go completely different, and make a new genre. Im certain its possible, the execution is the difficult part. That would excite me more than a cross-genre, but cross-genre is still great.

Everybody loves Uncharted 2 and I would consider that cross-genre. platforming meets third person shooter.

It is a third person shooter with RPG elements, it doesn't really fit into either genre that well. What I mean is a game that incorporates two complete genres such as say Fallout could do if it removed VATS and fixed the shooting controls.

I suppose it could be. I'd like to see more Metroid Prime style shooters out there with lengthy campaigns and exploration a key element.

Wasn't Shadow of the Colossus sort of a new genre? I can't think of one or even two specific genres into which I could pidgeon-hole it.

I agree, and I would certainly go so far as to say that Team Ico is the most artistically inclined developer in existance.

I wrote a paper on this last term. Basically the term innovation means taking different elements from other places and attempt to mix them into a new way of doing things. By combining gameplay elements from different genres, the experience will always be fresh yet familiar, but this sort of effort should always be carried forth under the consideration of entertainment factor and experience of the player.

Genres lines are allways bluring. Look at games like Borderlands and Mass Effect (Shooter/RPG) Mirrors Edge (FPS/Platformer) Arkham Asylum (Brawler/Stealth/Platformer/Detective) Dawn Of War 2 (RPG/RTS) Portal (Puzzle/FPS). Game developers are trying to mix it upby taking the best elements of other genres and implementing them. Even the COD online can say it has an RPG element, unlocking perks, upgrading weapons.

Defining a genre for many new games is very difficult. Its like music, defining a metal band as 'Metal' isnt enough, is it metalcore, nu-metal, rap metal, thrash, apocolyptic-scandinavion-post-modernistic-doom-core...

You get my point.

We already see this, like shooter/rpg for example.

Yes but in those cases the games are just one genre with aspects of another, such as Fallout which has terrible shooting controls or ME2 which only has few RPG aspects. I mean to say a complete cross which fully fits into two genres and does them both as well as single genre'd games.

Only if they start making games that combine genres while still making both aspects feel good. ME2's shooting mechanics are poor, as are the shooting mechanics in Fallout. Of course, some straight shooters have poor shooting mechanics, so I guess that problem isn't limited to hybrid games.

As is the case perhaps in ME2. As long as incorporating various genres to appeal to more people doesn't come at the cost of watering down the game.

The first time I encountered emergent gameplay is Deus Ex. I"m sure there are ones older if we think hard enough.

Platformers met shooters long time ago! Have you played Contra and Turrican games? :P
