I was thinking of buying my little bro a Xbox 360 for his B-day on October, but recently I've been reading up a lot on this so called 3 rings of death.

http://forums.xbox.com/15598492/ShowPost.aspx

Is it common for the system to die like this within a time span of 3 years? Any of you guys suffered like this recently?

I'm more surprised than anything, this soundsa lot like PS2's disc read error, but ona whole new level.

Perhaps a Wii purchase is in due?

Even mine is dead right now. It died Sep17th. But I bought Mine on launch day. Never had a problem before then. Too bad I have to rent a system from Rent A Center to play Halo 3 until my system is returned. But I still would buy new one Today if I had the money. The newer ones are better. And have HDMI.

They should be. And even if not all Xbox 360's that die from RRoD are protected with a 3 year warranty.

Yeah get a replacement plan, I do any for any system I buy. They also give money back incase of price drop which is a good thing. Working at Best Buy in the customer service center I see a lot of returns and exchanges. This one guy has gone through 4 playstation 3s which is incredibly shocking, but because he had a replacement plan and was still under manufactures warrenty we can exchange up to as many times as needed. I've also seen this happen with this game and his xbox360(he was on number 6).

They cover price drops too. So if you are spending 50$ on a replacement plan for 2 years and you see a 100$ price drop you get money back.

no, don't be mistaken.

even the newer batch of the HDMI equipped Xbox360 is not safe-proven, because it still uses the same 95nm chipset.

you should wait for the 65nm one.

The 65nm chip just made it quieter. I don't think the 95nm chip was the source of the RRoD problem.

Um, I've seen a lot less returns/exchanges lately where I work. During spring and summer I would see 3-4 xbox360 returns a day now it is one every other day which is still higher then Playstation 3 returns/exchanges but it is declining.

here's what i've read froma number of stories, they are saying that the main cause of the RROD issue is due to overheating problem, and since 65nm processed chipset will use less electricity, and thus helping to reduce the heat in the system.

and since the new batch still uses 95nm chipset, so there shouldn't be much improvement to the heat problem. otherwise, why would you still hear people getting their 3rd, 4th system returned?

They added a new heat sink to stop the problem, so far it seems to be working.

I'm not sure myself. But I've had no problems with my older model. Just give it some air and you should be better off.

Some how I just can't believe that.. The new one are better, and MS is sending any that are repaired "Now" back with the newer parts.. I am quite certain the failing Xboxs are starting to all get fixed one by one.

oh there is no denying they are taking measures to fix it, but that mean 360 still arent dying? HELL NO IT DOESNT. last i heard they were shrinking the CPU as well and not the GPU which is the problem, i dont know if that is true, but if it is you can expect the problems to still be prevalent.

fact is the death rates are still too high, they just gone from sky high to just bad.

It's typically the ones that are bought around launch that are getting the rings. All the ones shipped in the last 8 months or so are fine. The warranty is nice though, at least it's fixed for free for those that got them around launch and have gotten then rings. Better than being forced to pay $100 to fix a PS2 that stopped reading discs, which was my situation.

yea im a pc gamer who will buy a ps3 when MGS4 is out, unless they drop to $400 before the end of the year. im mighty happy right now playing most of 360 games at better quality and with free superior online gaming :)

i have owned all systems the past few gens, i got nothing against xbox i actually really like halo, its just i think PC FPS are superior. i will buy a 360 for whatever few good exclusives i missed (halo 3, NG2, mass effect, forza 2, if none of those get ported to pc which seems to be the trend)when the premium one hits $200 or something

Far from all are faulty despite what fanboys like to think. Although i do think it's closer to the 10% defective ratio (more like 8%) rather than what MS said about it being at 5%. Although, who knows. 5% could be correct. It's their console afterall, they'd know better than anyone.

And I know at least 25 people that have owned systems for over a year with no problems. The only thing dying in here is the credability of the people posting the generic, 'I have a friend who just bought a 360 that died' stories in here...

[QUOTE="VACASCULIADAS"]Not all 360 are faulty ,i had have mine for 5 months and not problems.DXGreat1_HGL

And I know at least 25 people that have owned systems for over a year with no problems. The only thing dying in here is the credability of the people posting the generic, 'I have a friend who just bought a 360 that died' stories in here...

Yeah i know,. those imaginary friends with 3 or 4 broken 360s

One guy I know at work had his 360 die on him and another says he feels his is on it's way out with occasional freezing and the weird noises it makes when he's playing a game sometimes.

Sucks for MS.

I've seen people come back and exchange their xbox360 around 4-5 times. It does happen, so you don't need to act like it never happens. I've had 3 consoles in my home since launch, none of them have broken down. The only one that is having problems is mine, the drive sometimes gets stuck and I have to wiggle it a little bit. Besides that we have been pretty lucky with the 360s in my home.

No one ever said it never happened. It just seems ironic that everytime 1 isolated story is posted, suddenly you get endless threads of cows claiming they and every single friend they have is on their 5th or 6th 360...

Seriously, I would wait on it just to see if the new ones RROD. It might seem like it's fixed, but it's nearing 2 years and there are still stories of 360s RROD. I would recommend waiting since the price will go down and there will be more reliable hardware later on.

Case in point.

Too bad it doesn't change the fact that MS themselves admitted the design flaw and stores have reported unacceptable returns of 360s.

Don't worry, maybe MS will do a better job with their current crop of 360s being manufactured now, since they did such a bad job with the first 10 million 360s made.
