http://kotaku.com/5479257/super-mario-galaxy-2-hits-north-america-may-23

Yea Let's all celebrate we'll be playing MG2 in the summer, reading on what do I see -

the original plan was to "essentially create new variations of the worlds in Super Mario Galaxy."

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is said to have 90 percent new levels with the rest being levels from the original Mario Galaxy with different objectives

How lazy can you get, I wondered the other day why it was still set in space but now I know why so they can re-use the backgrounds. sounds. enemies and now levels.

But this isn't the first case this gen of pure laziness by Nintendo - New Super Mario Bros Wii, SSBB - Both basically ports gameplay wise.

Maybe Zelda Wii will prove me wrong but even the most hardcore sheep can't admit that Nintendo doesn't care about their core franchises.

Reusing levels does sound pretty lame.

I think that was bad translation. What was really said was that there were alot of unused levels left over from SMG1 and they make 10% of SMG2 content.

erm 90% new levels is fine. some ppl like revisiting a few old levels. why do you think the first thing everyone does when they have user creation tools is to redo old mario levels? as for reusing backgrounds sounds and enemies... do you want them to stop using goombas and turtles? a lot of sequels reuse assets from the previous. this is common place. as for NSMB wii . it's a different game not a port. and SSBB is way different. Zelda was a port though.

I really really hope it doesn't use the same hub world. The hub world in the first mario galaxy was the only thing about it that just completely sucked.

And we're just now realizing this? Really, the yearly rehashes of Mario Party didn't send out any red flags?

As I perceive it, what defined Nintendo back in the day was their emphasis on quality product rather than profitability. Sadly that now seems to have been reciprocated (which doesn't necessarily mean they don't make quality product, it just seems to have taken the backseat to their bottom line).

I'm guessing you consider most direct sequels released for the same platforms lazy because all developers do this.

1. Mario evidentally controls time in this game from some of the previews. Did you ever think those few levels are plot-sensitive and nessecary?

2. Oh like other games don't re-use matieral? I suppose all the AmmunNations and things re-used in Liberty City don't count. How about the some of the planets in KOTOR2. Its a sequel. Of course they'll have flashbacks or whatever

3. Yea making 90% new content is lazy.......... coz you know they didn't even make any new content

People are over-reacting about this, infact didn't myiamoto say "90 or 95%" of the game is new?

(spolier alert)

I bet anything we replay the last fight with Bowser and see his falling into the black hole from a different angle, and how that influenced the "new mushroom kingdom" given to Mario by god,....i mean Rosalina at the end

Well for 90% of the content I want to pay 90% of the suggested cost. It can be seen as bad but of course the other 10% is of course leftover content from SMG which wasn't used so people are trying to spin this as being worse than it is

When you make a sequel that exists in the same game world as the original, there is going to be some overlap. Look at the Final Fantasy sequels. They reused locations, but expanded or looked at different regions. Using old levels doesn't mean you are going to be following the same path.

Hyrule in the Zelda universe uses the same regions over and over but changes them enough to make them fresh. Let's see what it really looks like before making judgements people.

They are reusing old levels from Super Mario Galaxy that never made it into the original...It is still brand new to all of us. I also assume that they have tweaked and refined those levels to fit into Galaxy 2. Or at least this was what I think will be the case. Even if they are repeating levels, there are some galaxies that I would certainly like to revisit such as Dusty Dune, Toy Time, Battlerock, Freezeflame, and Melty Molten Galaxy.

Gran Turismo 5 is going to be reusing like half or more of the tracks and the cars from previous games! And they even use the same track but just in reverse! How dare they!

So 10% of the levels will be from the old game... but reworked with new objectives giving them hopefully a fresh way to play them again, and.... yet we have 90% of the game with new levels... 90% .... has that sunk in.... that means 9 out of 10 levels will be new....

And if we wanna talk lazy let's talk Konami! Those castlevania games always have the same settings and levels and reuse the bosses! There for they suck and must all be the same.

Bad example, but I do agree Nintendo as a whole often does tend to take the "shorter" way around things.

I like classic style games with colors in them as oppossed to brown and grey "movie games" or brown and grey space/military shooters.

Please keep this in mind:
Biggest complain about SMG was that there was so much variation and potential that was used very little.
If anything people more than ever were asking for 'more of the same'.

Being a poor translation or not, it shouldn't matter at all.
Nintendo is king at using things in a new way. I just hope they don't overdo it like SMG, and grand their wild imaginings the depth and playtime that they deserve.
I'm so going to love that game, amidst all those other games trying to be real and serious and whatnot.

There are some other really high quality games coming out this year on the other systems such as Starcraft II, Final Fantasy XIII, The Last Guardian, etc.

10% from the original game? DO you know how many sequels use way more than 10% of the assets of their predecessors. I am sure CoD: MW2 uses more than 15% of CoD 4 assets.

Miyamoto was referring to the development of the game. 90% new content means 90% of what's in the game was created after Mario Galaxy came out. The 10% are the unused levels from the original that they could put in on the original. We have known this since forever.
