My computer is just fast enough to run magic online. I plan on spending over $1000 a year on it since im switching from paper magic to online. Its really adicting tome so im gonna play it over 30 hours a week. I consider myself a hardcore pc gamer since playing magic online. To me what difines a hardcore pc gamer is someone who plays games on their pc alot. Magic online is also one of the most hardcore games made since it costs so much and takes so much skill.

True. Being hardcore has to come from your own expressions and opinions, you dont need "approval" of any sort to identify yourself as being hardcore :)

I know people that play Chess a considerable amount of time online, does that make them hardcore? I don't think so.

And Magic Online is comparable to Chess in that way.

Why not? They may not play a wide variety of games, but they are certainly hardcore electronic chess players. Chess is a game. That person is a hardcore gamer.

If variety determined the status of "hardcore" then someone that just buys lots of games but plays only 1 or 2 hours of it, must be hardcore. But then if variety AND time spent playing is what it means to be hardcore, then any proffesionl gamers dont count as they'll typically have a fairly small library but play only a few games...so pro gamers arent hardcore?

Chess is a pretty hardcore game to. You can easily differentiate the noobs from the pros.

I think you are trying to differentiate between "Hardcore" and "Dedicated"

Yup, no doubt about this. anyone that thinks Chess isnt hardcore is just... plain wrong. and should go back to playing Halo or MW2.

Isn't it hilarious that chess has more mechanics than MW2?

Chess takes a lot of skill and practice yes of course. But the word hardcore gets tossed around so much on this board that it's hard to make any argument with it.

It makes you a hardcore magic player, because it is really only a digital version of a paper game. That said there is nothing wrong with being a hardcore Magic player. (Although I will straight up slaughter you with my vengivines and bloodbraid elves)

I disagree. I think thats what you're trying to do. There isn't a difference. Hardcore gamer is just someone that spends several hours a week doing something gaming related. Its the same criteria any research polls use to determine a hardcore/casual/non gamer. The actual game(s) doesn't really matter.
