Poll Are you into "artsy" games? (38 votes)
You know, the ones that are mostly story driven with very little game play at all? The ones that try to make you weep?
Me personally, not so much. I'd like to spend my money in actual game play.

I'm into a game that I think is entertaining/satisfying with what it wanted to do. If it has to do it while up its own ass(Braid) or being super dudebro(Binary Domain) I'm cool regardless.
So yeah I can enjoy an artsy game that I think is executed very well. Such as Journey, and can even appreciate poorly done ones for the sake of being happy that at least something like that got attempted(To the Moon/Papa & Yo). But I'm also just as likely to be like **** that shit(Dear Esther or The Path).
I'm a sucker for story... Even bad ones, for some reason. I just like where these zany game stories attempt to go, even if most of them fall on their face. Games like To the Moon scratch an itch for me. Despite the lack of intelligible and compelling hands on gameplay, I still enjoy alot of the pacing and discovery these games offer. Sure, Sometimes you get to the end and maybe think the juice wasn't worth the squeeze, but I still dig the attempt.
Nope, and ironically they don't even look good either. Post processed flashy in your face crap doesn't impress me. And the story's are cliche and childish anyways. Games like Uncharted and Heavy Rain? Yeah, they're awful.
Panzer dragoon orta, now that's art, with gameplay to boot.
At least the current AAA game market is going to end sooner or later anyways, it's not sustainable.

Since when has Uncharted been artsy?
Sometimes, i mean Journey was fantastic and one of the finest experiences from last gen, but right now i'm just not in the mood to play another "artsy" game like Little Inferno for example.
Depends on what exactly you mean by "artsy", but typically not. There are a few adventure-type games that I really enjoy (e.g. Longest Journey, Dreamfall, The Walking Dead) that have fairly little gameplay. On the other hand, I really hated games like Dear Esther and Gone Home.
Demon's Souls is the game that made me realize just how important story is to me. Without a story, there was nothing to drive me forward and I lost interest in the game after beating at least two bosses from each area. Without a story, the game got so boring to me. It is why I never bothered with Dark Souls and won't be bothering with Dark Souls 2.
I guess it depends if I care about whats going on.Journey is not a good example. It didint make me feel anything but I admit it was at least pretty.
Length is a big factor for me. If there aren't gameplay mechanics compelling enough to last very long, then the length of the game needs to reflect it. Journey is a good example of this, as if it were a 4-6 hour adventure it would have worn out its welcome. I also feel that AAA games may never be able to achieve art due to the need to fill the hours required to justify full retail price. Bioshock Infinite is a good example because the FPS mechanics were sometimes at odds with the more artistic side of the game, at least for me.

100 percent correct.
I despise those type of games. There's no reason to be artsy fartsy and not have good gameplay. See NiGHTS into Dreams and Panzer Dragoon for examples of games that do it right.

Heavy rain was certainly "artsy".
But I mean any game that just tries to wow you with flash and effects, really. Which is basically the same thing as what artsy games try and do, impress you superficially.

Too bad since they both have great stories.
Without a story, there was nothing to drive me forward
I can't tell if this is sarcasm. Shouldn't gameplay be a enough? Back during NES era games barely had a story and even when they did it didn't really matter. We used to play those games for the sake of gameplay.
Maybe you're just not into games.
As long as the gameplay and story are there. There's games out there that are just benchmark tests with controls and worse graphics.
generally no.
the best artsy "game" i have played is dear esther. however i cant actually call it a game because it has no gameplay. its a very interesting experiment in using technology developed for games for a different purpose....but its not, in itself, a game.
flower was also nice and is a game. it actually does have a few rules. I played the journey demo on the PS3 and liked it. never got the full game though. i would like a vita version.
anything by quantic dream is horribly bad though. they are just awful at making games. maybe pitch a machinima idea to sony next time. take whatever excuse of gameplay they make out and just make a movie rendered in real time. maybe allow the player to make the odd choice here and there.
the games i like the most though tend to have more in common with a well designed and built table than they do a high concept art piece. the rules and objectives of the game are clearly defined (dont have to be simple...but clearly defined).
devs that tend to focus on the arty side tend to have very sloppy game mechanics.
one of the best examples where both merge very well though is okami. the newer price of persia games (sands of time onwards) are also another good example. once the player understands the rules of the princes movements they can look at a level and see the route to the next objective. sounds simple but thats a very tricky thing to do.
Nope I'm more mechanics oriented. I will say something like Brothers: ATOTS is great though. It has enough gameplay (some of its mechanics are actually real clever) to keep me interested and it deserves all the praise it has got. Journey however didn't do it for me at all.
