What do you think of this term? Is it ridiculous? Should video games ever be considered a "sport"? Or is an e-sport extremely different from a "normal" sport? What constitutues a "sport" in the first place?

Discuss! :D

For the record: I'm fine with it. I think it's a real thing, in all honesty.

The word "sport" among culture is used so loosely I don't even care anymore. I do find e-sport and its general idea slightly stupid, but that's me being ignorant to other people's pleasures.

Playing a video game is not a sport. Period.

They shouldn't call them ''e-sport'' as well, just call them ''c-gaming''. The c stands for competetive

so chess is not a sport because you're just sitting on your ass? Do you even know what the word "sport" means?

The term 'sport' is just like the term 'fun'.

It's a buzzword.

Words mean whatewver we want them to mean. And the term e-sport has catched on. Get over it.

No one gives a $hit if you "approve" of it or not. Some people enjoy it, and don't care about your opinion on it.

And more power to them, even if it's not really my thing.

I do enjoy the occasional high level SC2 match though ;)

I don't see why physical athleticism is such a strict requirement for 'sport', when 'art' is allowed to be so broad as to include random splatter painting and music with no logical progression.

What would you call an activity that is:

  • professional(payed/sponsored)
  • competitive
  • not intrinsically useful to society
  • fun for the player and spectator
  • and able to be, and is commentated

i think it's a completely normal term. it's merely descriptive, "a sport that you play with the help of electronics".

I think you are just arguing semantics, what about snooker(pool)? The only problem I have with e-sports is that it's "mostly" COD and alikes, as shallow as games can be and full of signifying nothing.

but then what about target shooting? it's an olympic sport, and it requires as much physical strain as gaming.

just because of something is less active then some other sports doesn't mean it don't take skill and team work to play games just like (traditional) sports of running around with a ball

Lol@esport. It's VIDEOGAMES. The name describes what it is--a FU**ING game. Unless you all are calling "running", "running game.". People need to get out away from videogames for a minute, go outside, and play a sport for a bit.

Why can we omit the physical element of mail, and call it e-mail, but cannot omit the physical element of sport?

Athletes are athletes, their physical achievements are not forfeit by any other sports, no matter how physical or non-physical another sport may be.

What should we call email, data transfer between two or more parties? It's overly complex and though it describe what e-mail is, it's so broad that also happens to describe all of the internet.

Yup, that's gotta be it, they're just jelly.

Stephano needs a term to make himself feel better about himself, 135k $ in 2 years.
And MvP Real jelly, at 247.5k in 2 years.

Since when can you send 'physical' packages over the internet, that still requires the physical mail system. (makerbot doesn't count, it can't make everything)

And no it's not a very physical activity, but nor is e-mail, though mail is very physical, and that's the point. "e" in this context is the ~omission of physical.

(pressing keys, pushing buttons, moving mouses and joysticks does burn calories, though it is ~nominal)

I'm definitely fine with it. One day I hope to see competitive gaming on television instead of streams where the pros get paid millions instead of measly thousands of dollars.

why not? all i see are arguments that favor it, and naysayers saying "no because i said so". basketball is a "game", target shooting with a mounted rifle is considered an olympic sport despite having zero physical effort, so what exactly keeps games from being considered a sport other than sheer prejudice? please, arguments this time, not "just no".

[QUOTE="mems_1224"][QUOTE="BrunoBRS"]i'm shocked at how many people here are uppity about some games being considered sports. you'd think that of all people, gamers themselves would be the ones more open to it and less clouded by prejudice.GreenGoblin2099

well its the simple fact that playing games is not a sport :| its competitive, its entertainment, its a lot of things but gaming is not a sport

Exactly... we've barely overcome the stigma a gamer had some years ago, and "gamers" wanna use a term that will only create a new needless stigma.

the only affected by the stigma as far as i can see are gamers that hold prejudice against themselves, which are a surprisingly large number.
