... be the first game you introduce your gaming child to, knowing this would be their first impression of video games and can have an impact in how they view the gaming world in their future?

As for me, the first game my dad made me play was Snake's Revenge on NES. Hence the reason I'm such a MGS fan.

Personally had I had a child now that wanted to get introduced to gaming, I'll have them start on Bloodborne or an open world game like Fallout 4 (minus the bugs of course).

What would your game or console of choice be?

Well aside from the fact that I never plan to have children or care to have them, I know enough to not subject them to M rated games, like, you know, Bloodborne and Fallout 4.

I'd start them on games like Viva Pinata and Banjo Nuts & Bolts both are beautiful and make you use your head a lot and both BC on the X1.

I'd wait quite a while before introducing them to dark violent games like BB.

@khoofia_pika:

C'mon guys lol you know what I mean. There's a certain age a gaming parent finds it okay to start introducing their child to games.

Hey, Mario seemed real disruptive to his environment and parents choose him at times lol.

Back in the early 90's, my parents introduce me and my sisters [2 sisters] the SNES with Mario World as our first ever game. Now then, I started with Nintendo when I was young, I have a daughter and I introduce her, her first ever gaming console and it was Gamecube that I had back when I was in high school. She was 7 when I gave her my Gamcube and now 8 years old, I gave her a Wii U on her Birthday. If any parent [like me] out there wants to give there child first gaming console, it should always be a Nintendo console, always. No matter how old it is, it's always the best way to introduce your kid to the world of video games, Nintendo has that. Sony/MS, not so much.

Edit: I started gaming when I was 7 years old.

Different parents different guidelines as to how they raise their children, what is okay and what isn't okay for their child to consume. ESRP are simply a warning, they don't dictate what the child should and shouldn't be subjected to. Honestly, the importance of those ratings are extremely exaggerated. They were simply introduced because some parents who thought playing Mortal Kombat would make their children into seasoned, and professional serial killers.

@davillain-: I agree, starting on a Nintendo platform is a good start point. I was just leaning more towards game mechanics and environment appreciation. To give them that wow factor head on.

But I definitely agree with having a Nintendo system at around 5-7 years age.

@HoVDaHuSTLa1: You'd start them on Bloodborne or Fallout 4, luckily you're not a parent then.

I have 2 kids one is to young to play games, but I started the other one on games like BK Nuts & Bolts & Viva Pinata. Now he plays games like Beautiful Katamari, Minecraft. & Goat Simulator. So basically fun games with no real purpose other then to just have fun.

just to inform, I am a parent of two young girls. None of which care for video games. Had I started them on any it would of possibly been Little Big Planet.

I'm big on artistic views. Me having a kid that wanted to explore that side would appreciate Fallout or anything similar. I know kids around my area that are hardcore COD players at the age of 6-7. Some argue that BB might be a little extreme but I feel you get a couple different connections with that game. Game design, soundtrack, horror and emo setting plus the skill of remembering different approaches towards enemies. I feel you get more out of that than you do with a generic shooter, from an artistic appreciation perspective.

I am doing this with my children now... My eldest, who is 10 was first introduced to Nintendo only games and some Atari joints... The Legend of Zelda was the first game I offered him when he got old enough to read... Since then he's completed every Zelda game except windwaker and twilight princess. I also had him play through Knights of the old Republic which he absolutely loves.... Now he's busting through super meat boy and Shovel Knight.... He even did a hero mode run through.

I am very careful to give my kids games that are special no matter the age of the game... Theyre waaaay better off for it too. I love chatting plot points in kotor or discussing secret items in Zelda. Etc...

@skullcavity: I absolutely agree that as a parent I have a desire to expose my kids to the hobby based on game design over graphics... In fact I don't care if my sons and I ever have a single discussion in terms of graphics... Its just not interesting. why start with ps2 though? ... The Snes and Nintendo have a collection of the most relevant and still very much playable franchises in gaming history... I could hand my kids a Nintendo entertainment system and not see them ask for another console for 5+ years.

Kirby! Its important to find games that dont require reading to understand the game. So Mario, Kirby, Smash Bros, Mario Kart etc, these are a good place to start. Will keep them entertained forever. Even Splatoon is a good pick.

But if your youngen can read, then Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Pikmin, Zelda etc is good. Wii U is a gold mine for kids, its got 10+ awesome games for them to enjoy.

Lego games, Yoshi Woolly World, Mario Party 10, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, New Super Mario and Luigi Wii U, Pikmin 3, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, Captain Toad, Splatoon, Super Mario 3D World, Hyrule Warriors, Zelda Wind Waker, Super Mario Maker and many more.

Lego games.

My 2 boys started as tykes on the 360 with Star Wars Lego games and have played just about every Lego game thats come out. Plus the co-op play means we can all play together, and often do. They've moved on to Halo and Minecraft but they're always up to play a level of Marvel, LotR, or Batman 3 Lego with their old man.
