On Jan 7 Warner is expected to go exclusivly blu-ray, virtualy finishing the format war, pushing paramount and universal to break there contracts with hd-dvd early. This will also push many more people that were debating getting a ps3, 360 or wii to get a ps3. Also many people looking for a HD movie player will get a ps3 because of the added gaming capiblities.

And you doubted Sony's Decision to put in Blu-ray

GO PS3

Not if you look at stand-alone sales. HD-DVD isn't going anywhere and neither is Warner.

When people who don't play games hear "PS3" they probably think it's for video games and not that it can be considered as a cheap BR player.

But the PS3 is still the cheapest and most valuable BR player on the market by a long shot. My uncle even bought a PS3 purely as a BR player.

If HD-DVD dies, how many other people will start buying the PS3 purely for BR? Maybe they will also game on it, who knows?

And while people can laugh at mock Sony all they want about the PS3 being a BR player and not a game machine. I personally beleive Sony has WAY more to gain from the HD wars than the console wars this gen. Sony winning a format war (has to happen eventually) will prove much more profitable and beneficial than the small amount they may make from games if the PS3 suddenly took off.

The question is: will eitherof themwin the format war? It is quite possible that neither of them will take over for DVD and we'll wind up getting our Hi-Def on demand or something like that.

what i am trying to say is if they are one of the 100s of millions of people stuck in the last gen of gaming and are looking for a blu-ray they will consider the ps3 because there are only a few Blu-ray players that are much cheaper than the PS3 and none have more features.

Considering they just released the Kubrick Collection and the 5 disc Blade Runner set on HDDVD, I think the rumor is a lie. Let's also not forget that Paramount is HDDVD exclusive. The war will go on for a few years.

Not if you look at stand-alone sales. HD-DVD isn't going anywhere and neither is Warner.

My asterix pre-empted your stand alone sales argument. A player is a player. All of those hardware sales doesnt seem to increase HD DVD disc sales anyway so what is the point?

And don't be too sure aboud WB. Warner has seen all of their biggest titles selling considerably on Blu-ray over HD DVD. They are certainly in a position to see the obvious: blu-ray sells, hd dvd doesn't.

the problem is that 99% of the people don't want a blu-ray player and a big portion of them might have not even know what it is. It will barely help the sales of the ps3, unless there is a big price drop.

So nice to see people here know nothing about this format war.

1. Those also released on blu-ray. Guess which format sold the most?

2. Paramounts contract ends on Nov. 2008.

It will end sooner than you think.

The rumor is just a rumor. Its neither fact nor lie. Oh and Trasformers sold crap on HD DVD. Paramount lost that week in sales to blu-ray.

I don't think it would push people debating to get a Wii, 360, or PS3, to go out and buy a PS3. Pretty irrelevant to most.

Paramount is HDDVD exclusive because of a 160million dollar deal made with microsoft. this deal started on august 20th and ends a year and a half after that along with hd-dvd

Well it is my primary movie watching machine. It upscales DVD's beautifully. It plays blu ray discs. Its a secondary feature for sure though. Gaming is the reason the PS3 exists.

Sorry but I don't consider paying $34.99 (Suggested retail price for Robocop at Best buy as of Dec 30th) for movies that look just as good on DVD for $14.99a good idea especially for only half of them since half are on HD-DVD (No HULK on Blu-Ray, no Shrek on Blu-Ray, No Matrix on Blu-Ray, No Transformers on Blu-Ray). This whole HD format is a joke.

The VHS Beta war went on a loooong time. This will go longer as there is a very established format already. There was nothing to fall back on in the VHS/Beta days. People won't adopt, because they dont need to. And as far as titles go, major releases on standard DVD often sell more in one WEEK than all HiDef titles have sold across both formats in total. I dont really care where the war goes. Its likely neither will come out on top. I wouldnt have an HDDVD player if it werent for the fact that i got my Toshiba for $100.

I kind of figured this would happen eventually, sony will finally win a format war. Now, I hope Blu-Ray movies dont come on crappy codecs anymore. Most Blu-Ray movies look great now, but way too many were using crappy codecs and had a grainy look to them.

The overall quality of the PS3 was sacrificed so Sony could introduce a new MOVIE format. Deal with it.

But the PS3 is still the cheapest and most valuable BR player on the market by a long shot. My uncle even bought a PS3 purely as a BR player.

How is PS3 the most valuable BR player on the market when it more-than-likely, and from what I have read from others, is the cheapest (meaning worst) quality one available. I have yet to find a problem playing Blu-Ray's on my PS3 but many people, including myself, have read numerous threads about people complaining their PS3 will not play certain Blu-Ray discs, similarly to how the PS2 was a A+ garbage DVD player. PS2 could barely read most new DVD's after about a year. If I really wanted to watch Blue-Ray DVD's, I would be a machine specifically built for that, not also built for gaming. My only point here is, PS3 is not the best BR player around, and that's a fact. There is a reason alot of them cost 900+. Quality comes with a price.

Just so you don't cry about this post and if you havn't figured it out already, I own both systems and have both an HD-DVD and BlueRay player to watch both mediums. Both of these mediums have their +'s and -'s. Atm I dont care which ones, because I can watch anything in any format, but most of us have come to terms with the idea that Blue-Ray will more-than-likely win given its sales. Only thing I wish they'd fix is how delicate Blu-ray's are compared to DVD's.

Well for one you need a nice (read: fairly expensive) TV and then you also need a nice (once again read: fairly expensive reciever, with HDMI inputs) with good speakers to really appreciate what HD DVD and Blu-ray have to offer. Many people just don't want to drop that kind of money on whatthey see as a marginal improvement. I really enjoy my HD DVDs at the moment but I did spend the money on a nice TV, reciever, and speakers to fully appreciate the format. (I will also be picking up a PS3 for Blu-ray as soon as Bestbuy finishes processing my rewardzone points)

Well they don't look "just as good". They look 500 x better. If you are serious about your movie watching its the best way. I hate when I have to buy a movie on DVD, they look so flat in comparison.

the best move for blu-ray was putting them in the ps3. for every game system sold a blu-ray player is sold. plus add that to stand alone players. the war would be different if ms had put them in the 360.i may of bought one. but hd-dvd doesn't have enough movie support to justify a purchase.

I buy a gameing console to play games on it. So yea , i dont care.DirrtyNinja

Yea exactly.

I guess so many people buying the PS3 for it's Blu-Ray player kind of explains why it's attach rate sucks so bad compared to the 360.

These are gaming consoles, not players. Why does who's selling more movies matter here?

[QUOTE="thegame1980"]Sorry but I don't consider paying $34.99 (Suggested retail price for Robocop at Best buy as of Dec 30th) for movies that look just as good on DVD for $14.99a good idea especially for only half of them since half are on HD-DVD (No HULK on Blu-Ray, no Shrek on Blu-Ray, No Matrix on Blu-Ray, No Transformers on Blu-Ray). This whole HD format is a joke.jdp0412

Look just the same on dvd WTF. have you ever watched on or even heard the difference in sound.

and about the price buy the blu-rays on amazon they are only 5 bucks more than a normal dvd, well worth it for an extrodinary experience

True its not cheap. Butsalesof HDTV's are doubling every year and prices are going down down down. Once I started watching all of my fav shows in HD it was a natural progression to want my movies in HD as well. Once you get used to the quality its hard to go back.

Am I crazy or is this format 'war' nowhere near being decided at this point. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sales are still smaller than miniscule when compared to DVD sales. We're going to have to wait for the mass market to decide (if they ever do). So far we have a sampling of PS3 owners and early adopters. As the Gizmodo article previously posted stated - they may simply become luxury items.

The mainproblems the HD format faces:

Not many 'average' people own an HD TV let alone care about having an HD picture.
Not many people can tell the diff between a regular dvd and hd format on a TV smaller than 37 inches or so.

Just rumors but Blu-ray outsold HD DVD both in players* and disc sales in 2007, thats for certain.

Dreams-Visions

Not if you look at stand-alone sales. HD-DVD isn't going anywhere and neither is Warner.

Blu ray has something like a 79% market share over HD-DVD.

For the last time, people will not buy a PS3 to be the centerpiece of a high end Hd home theater, not a toy, not ever

Kids will, but not adults, I do not use any of my game systems as a primary DVD player, never have, stand alones are always better

so say blu-ray win, it means people will start to buy the stand alone players, because they will be cheaper than a PS3, and look better, and fit into those audio racks

Blu-ray winning means you will still have movies to play on your TV in you room on your PS3.

If I'm wrong, and people start buying the PS3 in droves for its Blu-Ray player, alot of third party developers will be very upset when thier games do not sell to the miilions of 64 year old men who own PS3's but do not play games, that would be a bad thing for PS3 as a game machine

Well they don't look "just as good". They look 500 x better. If you are serious about your movie watching its the best way. I hate when I have to buy a movie on DVD, they look so flat in comparison.

500x better my arse. it may be better looking but not enough too outweigh the price tag. you have too be a fool too pay those prices for a movie.

GO PS3
