Ascend: New Gods becomes Xbox's 2nd "Free 2 Play" game.

Ascend: New Gods, from Toy Soldiers developer Signal Studios, is the second confirmed free-to-play game coming to XBLA, following Happy Wars' launch in September, Microsoft tells OXM. Ascend: New Gods is scheduled to ship "in several months."

XBLA's free-to-play games require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, "as many of the games planned will be multiplayer games by nature (an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription is required for multiplayer gaming)," Microsoft says. The free-to-play games will "leverage the Microsoft Points system," which we assume means they will "use Microsoft Points to offer players pretty, but useless items. And tons of people will buy them."

I like Signal Studios but I'm a bit skeptical over how their new game will work with this model.

I suppose Happy Wars will reveal if MS is going to abuse the F2P model or treat it how it should be treated. The former seems the more likely but you never know. If they balance it right, both they and the consumers benefit.

I don't see it happening either. Which is a shame because I'm actually looking forward to New Gods. It looks pretty impressive for an XBLA title thus far.

It's a waste for someone that buys all those games at full price within days/weeks of release. But for someone like me it's great. I don't usually buy downloadable games at all, and I don't always keep up with buying the newest releases. So I think $50/yr for a smorgasborg of games I don't already have is a fantastic deal.

I do wish they gave out more DLC though like they initially did with all the Killzone 3 DLC packs. I hate paying for DLC, but wouldn't mind to pick up some older DLC for "free". But DLC seems to not really be priority for PSN+ anymore. That being said they went completely over the top with the games. How anyone can say that a constantly rotating offer of TWELVE(!!!) games is not a great deal is beyond me.

There's alot coming for the Xbox ecosystem in the next 1-2 years, and I'm not talking just about a new console, I know there's an exclusive MMOFPS in the works and alot of XBLA games in the pipeline, also some exclusive DLC.
