Well, the guy certainly exaggerates a lot, and I don't agree with some of the points (parkour; music, which is not as good as AC2 or Brotherhood but still pretty good), but I actually agree with him on most of the points.

I'd actually read the entire article rather than just the headings before commenting.

P.S: I like AC3, I just think it was kinda disappointing, and it's probably the second weakest game in the series after Revelations. Still a great game, though.

It's not as good as Assassin's Creed 2, but it's still an awesome game and the best one of the year so far.

I thought the game was great. It was definitely rough around the edges but the package as a whole came together quite nicely. I still think AC2 is the best the series has to offer, but I wasn't disappointed by 3.

Wow. I'm at sequence 8 and everything they list is everything I have a problem with in the game. I feel like I'm just running back and forth from Boston all the time, the frontier isn't very inviting to explore, combat is highly repetitive and never works the way I wanted it to work. And they're so right about stealth actually being pretty broken in the game. I usually just end up clobbering my way through everything. I also hate the way missions are presented, like it doesn't explain what exactly it is I should be doing enough and the objectives for full synchronisation I find quite distracting and they make me feel like I did everything in the most un-cool way possible when I don't acheive them..... But in saying all that, it's still a good game o.o

It'll be the only Assassin's Creed I will skip. Played all of them. Revelations was meh. Brotherhood was great. AC2 was amazing, IMO. AC1 was ok. I think the series just peaked at 2 and could not live up to that game's standards. I don't know. From what I've heard and seen, AC3 does not look like much fun at all.

it was really disappointing. which is sad because connor was such a good character and the revolutionary war is such an interesting time. saldy the game just felt half assed and lazy.

It took awhile, but now I'm doing the Homestead missions and I'm pretty hooked in right now. I like how everything is assigned to two or few buttons. It makes it more fluid when you get used to it.

The one thing that has me dialed in though is the environments and atmosphere of the game. It sooo breathtaking and real to a point I feel like just standing still and take in the surroundings whether it be in the city or the frontier.

They should really stop with the yearly releases and take the time to make a great game not just an average one.

I wouldn't say it's disappointing as much as it's still Assassin's Creed. It is for better or worse more Assassin's Creed. And the reality of it is that Assassins Creed was never a great series. It was fun sure, and some neat ideas, but it also wasted a whole lot of potential as well over the past 5 years. Three isn't really all that different from that group.

I did enjoy AC 2 and Brotherhood more, but AC III was a solid title to me. I agree with some of what was said in the article (it did fill a bit slow, and the loading screens got annoying) but for the most part it was a good game.

Not one bit for me. I was very skeptical about the setting and the naval aspect, but I love it! Contolling your own boat and getting into battles is a ton of fun. Revelations was the biggest disappointment I had in years, but this game might be my GOTY. I know everyone's opinions differ, but this game is something else. The level design, especially in the frontier is amazing. The voice work is also awesome, fighting is fun and the story is great.

I think Assassin's Creed 2 is the only truly great entry because it fixed almost everything wrong with the first. The thing is, they really needed to continue improving on the formula, not adding to it. After Brotherhood and Revelations, I hoped AC3 would be the Chaos Theory of the franchise. It wasn't so.

Sadly that's how it is around here....it's sad but at least you know people around here have bad taste (meaning they miss out on a lot of games).

Atm I'm playing through Dishonored,Borderlands 2,Torchlight 2 and AC3. All of them are goty material (except maybe TL2) and it's gonna be hard to choose from 3 of those games for my goty. I could care less about what GS hands out for goty since they are just a joke when it comes down to video game professionalism.

You'll hear no one complaining about Dishonored, X-COM, or Dark Souls. The fact of the matter is, this generation sucks a lot. To paint a really broad stroke, it's probably to do with the type of games that keep getting made. They're the games with big budgets, very little innovation, and play like every other game on the shelf. In the case of Assassin's Creed, they've had five games. Five games in a franchise is no small number. They had five games to get it right, or at least make it exciting each time. They didn't. And for that, massive disappointment. The game is still fun though, I like playing it.

The thing is this forum lives in hyperbole. You dare say a game isn't great, it's merely good, and people jump to "oh he hates it". And this forum also tends to by into hype a lot. And the easiest way to be disappointed is believe in developer bullsh1t.

That bit was actually inspired by your recent playing of Atom Zombie Smash lol. I just read the blurb on the Steam Store. That actually sounds really good...

Yeah totally.. And Its not just that there is five games, its that there has been five games in five years.

Remember when it took a really long time for something to come out? That allowed time for the industry to change and for developers to come up with great new ideas and push things forward. Now that we get stuff every year every big series feels like Madden or FIFA. Yearly updates with a bunch of stuff thats a little different, but its just overall improvement of the same game not an entirely new one.

Because of this games that are 4-5 years old even just from this generation feel anchient and outdated because that same game is just being updated yearly rather than something new given to us to where we remember older releases more fondly for what it did differently than the current releases we are receiving

For example, game like Super Mario World and A Link to the Past are remembered as some of the best games of the 16 bit generation, even though they came out within like the first year that it really started. If that generation operated the same way ours does then Super Mario world 2 and 3 would have come out the next 2-3 years and been just a little bit of an improvement to make the original feel outdated. At the sacrifice of games like Star fox and Yoshis Island being made as well because hey the big series are more important than making new ones

That article is a bit nitpicky. A lot of those little things the guy complains about have been present in most of the series.

The fact is, the gameplay is pretty much objectively better than AC2, and that's what matters most.

So true. I can understand why Ubisoft is doing it though. I think I posted this in the AC3 hype thread, but Ubisoft spent $1 billion in operating costs last year, and only made $48 million dollars profit. That's a 4% profit margin, and that really sucks for a software company. That's supermarket level profit margins, and supermarkets require you to return every week for their business so it's fine. I dunno how Ubisoft is going to break out of its high budget development strategy. They are cornered, really, because people do buy their games, and risking at a billion dollars over a small profit margin could be fatal. Maybe they can reposition themselves during the next-gen transition.

From what I've heard it's the best one since Assassin's Creed II, but still woefully underpolished with some unfortunate corners cut and a supposedly bad ending (I don't know anything about that though).

I've got to agree with the author. Most of what he points out is dead on. It's really a matter of whether you are willing to power on through the problems and finish the game or not. I wasn't. I've enjoyed every other game in the series, including the first one, but I just can't make myself want to play any further through this game. It's really a shame considering how much I was looking forward to the game and the story.
