This is NOT a sony bashing thread, this is for discussing the Vita MOVING FORWARD, not mistakes Sony may have made in the past:

Sony stated at E3 2011 that they hoped to make the Vita profitable in "Three Years". This was widely agreed to mean covering R&D, and initial losses on hardware, (not just beginning to sell the hardware at a profit).

  • For FY2011, Sony sold 1.8m Vita's, the projected number was thought to be around 2.4m.
  • For FY2012 , Sony slashed it's projected Vita sales from 16m to 12m.

Now, we have a sales shortfall of 4.6 million units, or 25%. Is it still possible for sony to make that back by E3 2014?

Assuming decreased economies of scale, a lower sales projections, and a lack of Killer Ap's (COD Vita doesn't look set to stimulate the market), could Sony be looking at another 3-4 years before profitability?

The only people that can tell you how long it will be before its profitable is Sony themselves but of course system wars is full of profesional business analysts so someone is going to BS you an answer.

Do you know how much it cost them to develop, mass produce and stuff for a new system? No canning.

I'd say Sony should drop the price and bundle in a memory card as well as continue to produce quality games built from the ground up for the Vita. If they do this, then Sony should eventually get out of the red. Maybe a new marketing campaign as well.

I am not qualified to answer this question. What I can tell you is that I think Sony should drop the price and attempt to gain profit in years 5-6 because they always talk about this 10 year plan for their hardware. This way they can increase the amount of vitas out there and perhaps gain profits for about 4+ years. Sony's older systems still sell way after new ones are released (see ps2/psp) so there should be no problem gaining back what they lost.

Well Sony said 3 years and it is selling around 20% of what they were expecting/ They should seriously drop support for it and use all on a big tax write off. It hurts the gamers who bought the Vita but at this point Sony will never be profitable if they said 3 years with their sales projections. As much as they are giving away right now with these cross over games and PS Plus? It is like Sony enjoys throwing money away. It is almost a guarantee the PS4 will have an online subscription fee. It is obvious they can't go though another console that under performs while trying to get the Vita off life support.

it's already profitable, it already costs less to make than what they sell it for, they're just not selling very much, probably wasting more money on advertising and first party game development than they're making back

3 to 5 years depending on the future market situation for the handheld.
