At least Mario Kart has text chat, right? No. It doesn't even have that.

Mario Kart Wii Doesn't Even Have Proper Text Chat

"Nintendo of America have announced that the game will instead allow players to choose from a limited selection of automated statements/responses while playing the game. "Hello", "I'm sad", etc. I'd say welcome to 1996, Nintendo, but 1996 is still awaiting your arrival."

:(

UPDATE: Nintendo has decided to sell the Mario Kart Wheel separately. It not what you think though. You can now purchase the wheel without the game for around $10. What you can't do is purchase the game without the wheel.

If there is one thing Nintendo can't seem to grasp, it would have to be proper online play.

Totally agree.

Rather than building on their hit new concept and creating an all-around great console, Nintendo dropped the ball in a lot of areas. Sony had a limited yet effective online system with the ps2 that allowed developers to create their own online servers and systems, and so far nintendo doesnt even have this. with all of the hype over "Wii Connect 24" and all of the other free online systems, i though we would be seeing some more online action. Does anybody know if the new SSB game is going to have online capability? it would be totally awesome if you could play head to head in a big arena. I sure hope they do something like that.

And people want to credit Nintendo for their online efforst? Give me a break. This is ridiculous, a company that claims to care so much about putting out the best product and they give us pre created stupid statements? So lets see, we have friend codes, automated responses, no voice chat, option of using skype (LOL), no demos just yet, etc... YEA, good job Nintendo. You have the cheapest to make system out there and yet are making the most profit and yet continually refuse to put some of those dollars into a respectable online network.

I probally, to some extent, agree with whhat Nintendo are doing by NOT allowing online chat.

Look at it this way, if you are a parent letting their child play Mario Kart Online, or if you ar a 3-year-old plus person who is playing online, you would want to be able to enjoy the game for what it normally is. I reckon it would spoil the setting if you had people yelling in your ear "**** off" and talking off topic .... that's just my opinion though.

I somewhat agree that they are living in the stone age but I can see Nintendo's argument for the matter.

The problem is, online play very much goes against Nintendo's core values. They have stated that if the game is not able to be 'picked up and played by anyone' they will not pursue that opportunity. Online play is not something everyone can enjoy, it's very much limited to a specific part of the market. Not everyone has a wireless connection. Not only that but game experiences always change online. People can type/say anything online, which Nintendo sees as a possible barrier to everyone enjoying/playing the game.

Headsets generally have a mute button, and you could simply take the headset away from a child.

-RPGamer-

RPGamer, you couldn't be more correct. People applaud Nintendo for the Wii-mote and yet what does Nintendo do? They literally supply us with a horrible online system that should be laughed at more than applauded. Microsoft deserves credit for creating a fantastic online system for consoles with demos, arcade, videos, etc... and Sony has supplied dedicated servers, voice chat, HOME arriving soon, etc... and what does Nintendo give us? Friend Codes, automated statements (cell phones have had this for how many years?), no demos yet, laughable prices for their virtual channel games, lack of voice chat, etc. . . Good job Nintendo, you take one step forward, and two steps back.

As somone else has stated, its pretty simple, implement a system where you can simply turn off the volume or take it away from them. This is one problem that comes with aiming a gaming product to non-gamers; those of us who grew up on Nintendo and have helped them become what they are, are literally getting the shaft. We are being forced to play as if we are the three year old instead of Nintendo creating a system where the parents can customize online play for their children.

Lets keep in mind though, how long did it take sony to release the ethernet adapter and servers, etc. after the release of the PS2? even though it wasnt a great online system it did the job. keep in mind the Wii is still only in its first year and a bit of mainstream production.

Hey belive me im happy they actually INCLUDED online this time around but its truly sad when the DS version of mario kart has a bettter chatting system then the console version. Wouldnt it be awsome to have a head set and talk trash to the other racers after you hit them with a red shell ??

I dont care about voice chat in brawl because its a fighting game and Im going to be to busy focusing to talk but this is MARIO KART were the racers go at a top speed of like 50mph so there really is no reason why not to have voice chat or a modern txt chat system in place.

I can understand the whole " Not wanting anyone to be made fun of and so forth online" bit that Nintendo is on, considering how horrible LIVE is with that certain aspect, bt there alot of ways to make online enjoyable, safe and still be feature rich, Voice chat with ONLY those on your FC list? Mute/Block options? What's hard about that?

That would be awesome. It would make everything way crazier.

I don't trash talk with my mic at all though. I just like to talk to my buddies about school, or the game itself while I'm playing.

Both the PS2 and Gamecube has had online since 2002. Nintendo has had more than enough time to improve its online features.

Somehow they think it's ok to put voice chat in DS games, but a sin to even think about incorporating it into Wii games.

Silly Nintendo.
