I've had unusually bad experiences with ATI cards in the past, so I shall be staying away. I plan on getting a GTX 480 this summer.

I've only heard bad things about Nvidias drivers recently. :P
I'm definitely picking up a ATI 5xxx series card once Crysis 2 arrives.

yeah the very first driver i tried with te gtx 280 was the newest whql driver and all and that made the card perform worse than my 3870, so i rolled it back to the last release and now my 280 is going zoom zoom. It's very true, the Nvidia drivers are absolute crap. And yes, I have tested the 190.xx 191xx 195xx 196xx 197xx(was okay) and everything else in between.
I do like how the ATI has its video cards priced, but I dont like how I was never able to get the 5870 at MSRP price of $379 the card has always been $420+. At least when I was shopping for a video card. But the GTX 480 is a beast of a card especially when overclocked. I myself have a GTX 480 SLI setup and they work amazingly well, even when I only had one the card was amazing for the performance I was getting. Just one of these cards scored me a 25,000 score on 3d mark Vantage. You cant really go wrong with either ATI or Nvidia it all depends on how much you want to spend, or if physx/CUDA/3D vision is important to you.

I've had nothing but problems with them as of late.
Example: BC2 only runs properly with the most very recent nVidia drivers, but those are also the only ones that suffer from the DXVA decoding issues in MPC-HC (I think it's actually a driver-side issue with the EVR Renderer, which is required for DXVA decoding.) It's really damn frustrating.
And let's not forget driver version 196.75 ..that was one of the most disastrous driver versions in all video hardware history.

Yea before I moved over from my gtx280 to the 5870s from ATI, I had nothing but trouble with Nvidia. It seemed as though I would download a new driver and "Game A" worked amazingly, but now "Game B" played like crap. It was as if ATI and Nvidia switched driver teams.[QUOTE="Dataleak"][QUOTE="psn8214"]

It's prone to over heating and you may get the PSOD (pink screen of death). My friend recently RMA'd his because of bad drivers which messed about with the fan settings.
I agonized over my decision and finally ordered a 5870 last night. I sure hope i made a good decision. I walked into Best Buy today and saw a GTX470 on the shelf...it was hard for me to walk away. I am a big Dirt 2 fan and i wonder if i would notice any difference with the D11 graphic effects between one card and the next? I hope my new 5870 will satisfy me for the next year or so.

It never came close to over heating when I had it. it doesnt really get over 85 that often with working drivers, on nvidia's newest(crappy) drivers it almost went to 100C playing l4d2. I downclocked it to stock clocks just to be safe and since having it oc'd was useless when it is processor limited. Also, it seems to hate furmark with a vengance, i can run loops of crysis, vantage, stalker, cryostasis benchies and it wont heat up very much, but whenever i put on furmark it just heats up to no end.[QUOTE="Dataleak"][QUOTE="ferret-gamer"] yeah the very first driver i tried with te gtx 280 was the newest whql driver and all and that made the card perform worse than my 3870, so i rolled it back to the last release and now my 280 is going zoom zoom.millerlight89

You won't be disappointed. The GTX 480 is fantastic! Though it runs rather hot. :PI've had unusually bad experiences with ATI cards in the past, so I shall be staying away. I plan on getting a GTX 480 this summer.

The fan does is really loud, but if your using headphones it should be no problem. The lower end fermi cards are coming this summer, so it sould be interesting to see what ATI has to counter Nvidia.I've had unusually bad experiences with ATI cards in the past, so I shall be staying away. Dx11 so far is not much of an improvment of dx 10 in games so far. I stuck with ati it came out 6 months before and I am glad I did.
Nvidia's cards are too hot, too noisey, use too much power and cost too much. 6 month's late and the performance is only 10% better nvidia lost this round.

My system is liquid cooled (everything runs ice cold), so it should be all good. :P

Gpu waterblocks are not cheap and the gpu's don't last long enough to justify the added price for me. My electric bill is high enough.ATI is deffenatley the way to go this round. The last ATI card I owned was an X800 PRO. After that I went with Nvidia. ATI has improved a great deal and I have had fewer problems with ATI in the driver department.millerlight89they have monthly releases for the drivers i believe, ATI/AMD have really stepped up with a good total solution, bought an upgrade with a quad/5700 together for 250, you can't beat those prices. And the 6core processors coming out are compatible with am2/am3 sockets. AMD loves its comstumers
The GTX 480 is loud, hot, and draws a bunch of power. I don't know why anyone would get it. Kobebean123It's the best single dx 11 card on the market. Has physx and cuda.

But the 5870 is 2nd best, produces half as much heat, half as much noise, and uses half as much power. Find a 8800 GS for PhysX, quietest DX10 and PhysX card on the market.
someone give me a few reasons why I would need to upgrade from my 9800gt right now?Midnightshade29If you need convincing, then you obviously have no need to upgrade.
Does anybody know where Nvidia is? Did they decide to take a vacation? I was always an avid fan of Nvidia, but far from a fan boy. I have owned 2 Nvidia cards and 2 ATI cards and I was equally pleased with all 4 video cards, but I am very disappointed in Nvidia. I don't understand this. ATI has released an entirely new series of video cards (The HD5000 series) and Nvidia's only answer is the GTX 470 and GTX 480, both of which are quite overpriced and offer impressive specifications, but the cards fail to take the crown from ATI. Now, in Nvidia's defense, ATI has definitely thrown there well known "My price's are cheaper than yours" philosophy to the wind for the 5000 series and have definitely cranked up the prices on the 5000 series (especially the 5800 series), but at least ATI is offering several variations of the 5000 series. 5600, 5700, 5800 etc, all with several model's within each variation. ATI may be over priced as well, but they are still offering card's at every price point while Nvidia's cheapest Fermi card rests at over $300+. The GTX 480 is only on average about 10-15% faster than the HD5870 and that number can be closed or even eliminated completely with some minor overclocking. This is what took nearly 6+ months to release to the public? 2 video cards? Where are the other model's at? It's a sad time to be a Nvidia fan boy. My 5th video card will most likely be an ATI card. Nvidia need's to take budget minded gamers into mind or there not going to be around much longer. They can't continue to rely on re-branded chips and overpriced card's. Nvidia and ATI's war is much like an elephant attacking an ant farm. Nvidia being the elephant and ATI being the ant farm. Yes Nvidia may have faster cards and they may be bigger than ATI reputation wise, but ATI's sheer amount of cards, variations of those cards and there cheap prices eventually will overwhelm Nvidia. I can't remember the last time I saw a "best bang for my buck" video card from Nvidia. The 8800GT was and certainly is a legend, both for it's price at the time it was released and it's performance but that was about 4 years ago and it's time for Nvidia to work there magic. We need another 8800GT, figuratively speaking. A nice Dx11 card from Nvidia thats somewhere in between a HD5830 and the HD5850 for $199 would be a dream come true for most Nvidia fan boys.RogerLa
460s are coming in the next months. How well that nvidia changed the name to step some numbers higher so people cant quote me with xbox 360 links on amazon lol.
The GTX 480 is loud, hot, and draws a bunch of power. I don't know why anyone would get it. Kobebean123Because some people don't care about loudness, that's what my speakers are for. They block out any sound the video card makes. I don't care about power that much, not like I can't afford it. And it doesn't get that hot, I just turn up the fan speed and it gets up to about 70 degrees Celsius during hardcore gaming, which isn't bad at all.
My old card was Nvidia, but my Radeon HD 5770 hasn't let me down yet. In fact, my 5770 has done nothing but impress me. For the price, I wasn't expecting much performance, definitely wasn't expecting to run max settings on games like Crysis and Shattered Horizon.Skittles_McGee
Just checked some Crysis Benchmarks and it runs it at 30fps 4xAA at 1080. :o And it's only £110 here. Definitely my next card. -edit- Actually no, not really a big enough jump from a HD4850, apart from DX11 and 10fps boost....
The Heaven benchmark was running CUDA(the middleware) tesselation NOT DX11 tesselation.Nvidia's new cards perform much better in applications that do DX11 tesselation.

lol... well it's not the greatest looking thing I ever seen. I guess DX11 really makes it pop.
Jpeg image compression :(. It looks amazing in real time. The textures are awesome. But yeah, the DX11 features really make it look nice. I tried to take a similar shot in DX10. You can see the texture quality difference.
Nvidia for me. I got a dual GTX 295 and it runs like a charm, eats up all the games ive thrown at it. ATI is decent but ive always prefered Nvidia.
