What do you think of the R600 (I know there's little information).  Based solely on both companies history of drivers, GPU capabilities, etc, which of the two DX10 cards do you think will pull out onto the top?

ATI is coming up a day late and a dollar short here. It's time for an upgrade on my end and I'm switching to Nvidia's 8800 series.

I'm disappointed with R600, to say the least.  Half a year later and it can't even beat an 8800 GTS consistently?   :?

Fake benchmarks. NDA won't be lifted until March 14. Don't expect anything real unless it's from HardOCP, ananadtech, and firingsquad.

Why isn't Dailytech an accurate source? They are featured on Anand, after all...

I wonder if they did the test on Vista or XP?

If this was on Vista...then it would be even more shocking...seeing as how Nvidia current Vista drivers are poor (though granted some PC's dont seem to have any problems with them....Mine seems to run fine under Vista)

SO I read the Daily tech and its a bunch of crap and very innaccurate.

the 8800 they use in the test is overclocked while the R600 is not. Lets wait to see some real tests from a more reliable source.

I do not see the point in owning an ATI card anymore. Most PC developers are choosing to optimise their games for Nvidia and it would make sense to buy a card that is most supported.

to be fair....thats the way its always been, Nvidia has always led the market in terms of sales, and a lot of games were made for Nvidia cards first.  But that never stoped ATI from releasing good cards.

So why do no other major hardware sites have it up? I find this extremely suspicious.

Those benchmarks were done on an old sample of the XTX that was exactly the same as the XT except for slightly faster memory( not needed because 100GBps is enough). The XT is almost as good as the GTX and it will be 150$ cheaper. No real benchmarks for the XTX are out yet.

This is completely false. The whole "the way its meant to be played"  thing is just marketing. Both ATi and Nvidia adhere the directX standards so they are usually almost exactly the same feature wise. Last gen ATi was faster in most games.

Because the NDA doesnt get lifted untill May 14th. Anybody who signed it and got real production cards wont have reviews untill then. Dailytech is a news site so they dont sign NDA's. They were lucky enough to get their hands on some preproduction cards.

The X2900XT is actually looking like a fantastic card.  It beats the 8800GTS rather handily at times and costs $400 at MSRP (cheaper online).  The top of the line model, X2900XTX, however does look like it loses out to the 8800GTX./

thats not true, their are noticable differences in some games, Particulary in Unreal engine games (epic is sponsered by Nvidia) which in some games, have glitches with ATI cards that cause Shadows to appear big, ditorted, and appear through walls.

No, that was driver issues on ATi that have since been fixed.  Looking at UT specifically Nvidia's 8800 range has a HUGE stutter bug, cannot take ss, and often BSOD when exiting the game.  The Way its Meant to be Played Indeed.

Developers develop around DirectX.  Both cards support it, both do fine.  In OPENGL apps there are some more differences, but those are few and far between these days, and the largest engine for it (Doom 3) doesnt have extensions for specific venders.

Well I would think the X2900 XTX should destroy the 8800 spec wise i mean it has a higher clock speed, GDDR4 vs GDDR3 vram, a 512-bit mem interface vs. 384-bit, i mean nvidia must have one hell of an architecture there to beat out a card that by the specs destroys it or the drivers are just horrible *for both the cards* and we just don't know either of their true potentials.

In the end im going to wait for full blown benchmarks.

Since this seems to be a more OK thread in SW, I'll throw in my input: That NVIDIA logo that come up in games is usually more about marketing than anything else. This is what a Supreme Commander dev (which is an NVIDIA-sponsored game) had to say about the matter. [quote="o, Gas Powered Games employee"] (SupCom is an NVIDIA-sponsored game. Do you guys get any kickbacks from NVIDIA?) Yes, but usually it's in the form of co-marketing. You scratch our backs, we scratch yours. e.g. We show the splash at startup, they show our game in their GDC, E3 booths, shots on the video card boxes, etc. (What kind of computers do you get to program and test games on?) Most are provided by GPG, but AMD and Intel often send machines to help test on (ATI/Nvidia send graphics hardmore for the most part). Supreme Commander got some special treatment since it made use of more than one processor core. We received a bunch of machines.

So as you can see, games don't get special treatments from a single particular company, and devs get equal developmental contribution from both NVIDIA and ATI, regardless of sponsorship. UT2004 is an OpenGL game, and so is another famous case of ATI vs NVIDIA performance discrepancy, Doom 3. OpenGL tends to be NVIDIA's home turf, while ATI always get first look in the latest DirectX ever since the Microsoft-NVIDIA split over Xbox. Such discrepancies are therefore simpler things such as driver issues rather than anything sinister like manufacturer favouritism. Indeed, subsequent driver updates improved Doom 3's performance on ATI cards immensely.
