Atlus: 2016 is ours

That's the message they are sending for Holiday 2015, alongside a commitment to release these games in 2016 in Japan and North America:

• Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
• Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem
• Shin Megami Tensei IV: FINAL
• Persona 5

Given such strong insistence from them, I think it is very safe to assume that Persona 5 will be delayed for yet another year

Someone explain this to me Persona 5 has been announced for a while and it keeps getting delayed. But people love Atlus and Persona 5? But Square Enix and Final Fantasy 15 get hate for the same thing?

Can someone tell me how that makes sense?

Remember that FF15 was originally announced in 2006.

P5 situation is not that bad by comparison, but i can see where you're coming from.

Not to mention that P3 and P4 are a million times better then FFXIII.

I'm expecting P5 before 2020.

Those are some hefty words.

A lot of gamers have no clue who Atlus is.

They're not comparable situations at all:

• Final Fantasy 15 was originally announced in 2006 as Final Fantasy Versus 13. It's been in development, and delayed, for ten years. Persona 5, by contrast, was officially announced in November 2013, and has since suffered two delays. The delays are crippling, but it's not even close to Final Fantasy 15
• Square Enix has a massive budget and development resources for their games. Atlus is a small group of developers with an even smaller budget, who have had one game that was a million seller throughout the entirety of their existence (and even that took two releases to get there). Given the difference in development resources, and Square Enix still taking more time than Atlus, they take a lot more heat than Atlus do, because Atlus is simply a smaller developer
• Final Fantasy is a bigger franchise, with millions of fans; Persona is maybe a tenth as big. Obviously the bigger franchise draws more criticism, simply by being in the public eye more
• Persona 3 and 4 were flat out incredible, and far better than anything Final Fantasy ever put out. Final Fantasy XIII is trash, and an argument can be made that the series hasn't had a good game since Final Fantasy X, IX even. So Atlus have more goodwill going in to begin with. So yeah, Persona 5 gets cut some slack, but it has earned it at this point.

So no, they're not the same thing at all.

A lot of gamers don't have any idea who or what a lot of games or companies are. Atlus are on the brink of mainstream penetration, the question is will they market Persona 5 properly to achieve it?

We'll soon reach out to the truth. Recently survey shows that SE is a bit nervous even with the FF name.

They should be, the last few Persona games have wiped the floor with the last few Final Fantasy games.

I'm actually quite interested in SMTxFE, but they have Persona 5, so they automatically win with that.

Looking forward to Odin Sphere...again. I haven't really played Persona or the Shin games but they just don't seem interesting to me yet.

• Odin Sphere, depends on price for now, I still have my PS2 copy and a still functioning BC PS3, will definitely pick up eventually though.
• SMT x FE - though I might have once been excited for this game the reveals to date have disappointed me and I've yet to be sold on this game
• Persona 5 - Picking up for sure, loved Persona 3, 4, and Q, expect more goodness here. This is the main reason I got a PS4, if it were on the Xbox One I'd probably not bothered to pick up a PS4 at all.
• SMT4: Final - I'll probably get, eventually, probably reluctantly as surely Atlus knows they can put a $50 price tag on these games (even 3DS games) and the biggest SMT fans are gonna pay, though I think they're limiting any potential growth of their audience by doing this.

EDIT: okay, just read on Amazon that Odin Sphere is gonna go for $60 and releases in July. No way, definitely wait until it's at least $30. That's insane. I hope they don't try to release at the same time of Persona 5, wasn't that supposed to be like Spring/Summer?

Definitely look into P3 and P4. They are among the greatest RPGs of all time.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news folks, but Persona 5 is getting cancelled. The development hell it's currently stuck in is too deep and they'll be making the announcement in early 2016.

I know it sounds like bullshit, but I mentioned Versus XIII being rebranded as XV a year before it happened, so I'm a credible insider.

I laugh at this in SW a lot lately. Nothing personal, but picking out differing details is splitting c**t hairs. Both companies are delaying games, similar enough.

I'm in for Odin Sphere because dat Vanillaware art. Really hope it gets released in a dead period since Q1 is packed so tight.

Devil Survivor Overclocked or Nocturne are your best bets to get into the franchise. Nocturne is pretty unforgiving, so I would start with Devil Survivor.

It would be nice if they brought back Snowboard Kids if they can.

@svaubel: SMT4 Final isn't an upgrade, it's an all new game, a sequel. It's just confusingly named.

Yes but when they severed it from the XIII world they had to basically start over. So I don't think it's fair to say this game has been in development since 2006.

Yeah sure, Persona is probably good game considering many people like to play it. We cant like all games we all have different taste, it is something for us all to play.

As Atlus is a subsidiary of SEGA I'd like to see them do well....but I don't play any of those games.

No matter how bad FF XIII was at least I was able to finish it unlike the first three persona games.
