While not a high-profile publisher in the West, Atlus has developed a reputation for bringing relatively niche Japanese role-playing and action games to Nintendo and Sony platforms stateside. Today, the Irvine, California-based American arm of the Japanese company announced it would be extending that reach to Microsoft's Xbox 360 as well.

"We are very proud to pledge our support to the Xbox 360 and to officially partner with Microsoft to bring quality titles to their impressive entertainment system," said Atlus USA exec Tim Pivnicny. "Atlus is renowned for its expertise and excellence in the RPG genre with critically acclaimed hits like Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 and Odin Sphere, in addition to the award-winning Trauma Center franchise."

Along with revealing its agreement with Microsoft to become an officially sanctioned third-party publisher, Atlus has announced two games for the console, both due out in 2008. Operation Darkness is a strategy role-playing game that puts a fantastical spin on the European front during World War II, giving players magical powers to thwart Hitler's advancing tide. Atlus did not attach a developer to the game, though it did launch an official teaser site.

Also slated to arrive in 2008 from Atlus is Idea Factory's Spectral Force 3. Released for the 360 in Japan in 2006, Spectral Force 3 is the first installment in the role-playing series to arrive in the West, and Atlus claims the game features more than 50 hours of gameplay spread out over more than 150 missions. Players assume the role of a mercenary commander and are able to recruit 40 unique characters to their cause.

Neither Operation Darkness nor Spectral Force 3 has been rated.

Pretty cool. I wonder if there will be an Odin Sphere 2?

Yeah they really are.

They just need to stop porting the exclusives to the PC and they might do even better.

Persona is a very hardcore Japanese game. I don't see them bringing it on the 360, lemmings cry about these things.

How is that every other 360 game out there? A game where you use magic and tactical role playing to kill German Nazis? :|

I didn't know we had games about killing Hitler with magic. Not that I'm complaining.

It's not a WW2 shooter. Apparently, it's a tactical RPG. The 360 has very few of those and needs more.

It just hit GS news. So something's changed from the time you heard about it. Or they're just really, really late.

:P

Regardless, it seems noone knew about it until now. :D

Fairly intersting how Gamespot tries to spin this.

Here's a piece from the original article.

"Publisher Atlus has joined the ranks of third-party publishers bringing Xbox 360 games to North America, announcing today the localization of Operation Darkness and Spectral Force 3. Largely known for the North American publishing of games like Odin Sphere, Persona and the Trauma Center series, the company's first two titles are a pair of tactical RPGs already released in Japan."

These aren't new games by any means they were Japan only releases already on the 360. They're just bringning them to North America.

I found it odd that Atlus would do this after showing so much PS3 support (Persona 4, SBC2) and after the bombing that was Eternal Sonata and the underwhelming Blue Dragon sales.

Here's a link to Spectral Force 3's Atlus of Japan's page. You can clearly see that it was released on May 29th.

Operation: Darkness looks pretty damn funny. The first time I saw the trailer for it I was like "Mooku panku dooku looku?" I have a hard time believing this game is any good. What did Famitsu give these games?

Seriously Cows you have Persona 4, Star Ocean 4, Yakuza 3, Disgaea 3, White Knight Story, and Steambot Chronicles 2. So why not hype and talk about these games instead of just saying "Just wait" and putting either the words "Price Drop", "Metal Gear Solid 4", or "Killzone 2" at the end?

This is a big thing weather you think the games are good or not.-

1- Shows software sales are paying off for the 360 to get games like these.

2-They choose to put these games on the American 360 and not the Japanesse PS3 even though they are closest in hardware.

3-Shows once again how asian developers are taken MS/360 more serious this gen.

Not only Nazis, there are Vampire Nazis in Operation Darkness, also Dragons.

This is Great news for me, I really wanted to play Operation Darkness because that game looked so great. Sure WW2 is getting boring but having vampires, zombies, and dragons seems interest.

Today, the Irvine, California-based American arm of the Japanese company announced it would be extending that reach to Microsoft's Xbox 360 as well.

That's the operative term here, Atlus USA just localizes. So, you will be getting obscure rpgs that were on the 360 now, which is still pretty sweet, but I wouldn't be counting on seeing anything from Atlus R&D 1 on the 360. Not yet, anyway.

Its really cool to see Atlus developing and publishing games for Sony, MicroSoft and Nintendo systems and hand-held's
