They are also giving away free hdtv's and free games in eur. That could tell you how bad they are selling.

"Desperate producers unashamedly asked the crowd to fake excitement when the cameras were rolling, while a team from 2Day FM let out bogus cheers to convince their radio listeners that a launch extravaganza was underway."

Sad, just sad.

meanwhile, over in the UK a similar story unfolds. I just got back from Tescos (walmart for the UK) and they had big banners anouncing PS3 available at midnight. Before launch, Sony UK told the BBC 'Sony has declared its launch of the Playstation 3 to date as a success, saying early sales are faster than those of its predecessor PS2'
As a bit of background info, this same Tesco at 360 Launch had 20 guys in a queue from 4 pm until midnight waiting to snap up launch allocation, (my friend was in the queue). Well I just got back from some grocery shopping, and for the PS3, um...........2 guys wandered in at 11.30 and hanged around for half an hour, got the PS3 and went home. All the rest of the consoles are sitting in a stack in the store, gathering dust. Comments from Sony at this point would be welcome.

Blu-ray and Hd-dvd aren't really doing much in pal regions, you ask a person off the street what blu-ray is and they don't have a clue.

Australia is naturally an underpaid and unwealthy country. Australians needs to work that much harder to afford quality electronics. I have a feeling the Playstation 3 won't be something that just explodes out of the gates, but rather something that gains momentum in this market.

True but ps2 only gained momentum in australia when the console costed half of what it started out as.

No one cares about Blu-Ray. Sales of Blu-Ray movies are very low compared to DVD's. Even though Sony boasts that there are over 2 million Blu-Ray players in consumer homes, they are only selling like 10K-20K of new Blu-Ray movies. That's a very small % considering the same movie on DVD can easily sell over a million copies in a couple of months. I'm not wasting my money on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Even if Blu-Ray wins, I won't buy any of those discs.

to be honest, even though I am a nintendo fan, I don't feel delighted that PS3 is not been received well. It is not healthy for the gaming industry overall, I mean if one system dominated the entire arena, that would reduce competition which will eventually reduce the quality of games, which can't be Good for consumers (we gamers). SO, You Pathetic 360 FANBOYS, and Wii FANBOYS, stop mocking the PS3 events, because you will gain nothing if the PS3 ended up down in the drain. I repeat, I am nintendo fan, hence the name. However, I am not happy with the cold reception of PS3 in both Europe and Australia. Well... its not like PS3 is in deep trouble yet, but the start doesn't look really promising from a sales point of view in the PAL region.. ( I guess ?) so sony has some catching up to do.....

The Age is just terrible (coming from an Aussie) so you really shouldn't be linking to that...

Still, I'm not surprised at the lack of excitement. I haven't seen one ad for the PS3 in the last month on TV, in the cinema/magazines...it's odd.

Wii had plenty of advertising. Sony are still to busy promoting their PS2 but they shouldn't just neglect the PS3.

Why are people making this a big deal.  People didnt run at midnight to get a console they already are guaranteed to get.  Do you really believe all those gamers in NA would have camped out a week if they had thier console preordered and new that Sony had enough instock that they didnt have to rush to pick it up.  The consoles sold well, people are spinning the fact that people arent crowded at midnight to get the console, well duh they already have it on hold for them, why rush when they can swing by and pick it up after work.

That part about advertising really surprises me. Sony prepared a major advertising blitz for NA and had a good amount of advertising (from my understanding) for Europe. A lack of advertising for the PS3 is a surprise. Still, be it Sony or the retailers, somebody expected way too much, and the result is a rather diappointing night for Sony.

If things don't pick up for the ps3 soon, then Sony will have real problems that make today's seem like nothing. I wonder how many Sony execs are losing their jobs over how poorly run the ps3 launch has gone? If my performance was that poor I'd be roasted and toasted then thrown in the street.

It's not a lack of advertising for the PS3.

It's a total lack of advertising for it.

All their ads are focused on the PS2, PSP and their games (both systems are doing well but they shouldn't ignore the PS3).

I like how they compared the U.S. launch to the Aussie launch.

The U.S. gamers were merely lab rats that fell prey to the hype, and people got hurt and even shot.  Now everyone else in the world knows what to avoid.

Why didn't they? I see threads joking about taking sick time off for game releases. Not systems, just titles. I'll probably take a vacation day for Halo 3. If I have one to spare, I might take one for Forza 2 (though I'll probably need it to recover from the Indy 500). I didn't take one for the 360 launch, but that's because I had just graduated in August and had just used my time off to have surgery. And you don't even want to see what a Madden release is like - drive past an EB at midnight and you'll never think of Madden as a game for casuals again.
So, if there are gamers so dedicated that they'll skip school, take time off from work, and head down to the store at midnight, then why weren't those hardcore gamers pumped up enough to get out there to be first in line?

How ignorant is it to call a whole country broke. Come on now denile is not a river in Egypt. I own a PS3 and even I know why the sales aren't there. Cost is the biggest factor with any consumer purchase but saying the sales are low because a country is not wealthy is just dumb.

I don't remember any shotings over the 360 launch and there were people camping out for the first month after it was released every time there was a shipment coming in. Now people are saying "I would never camp out for a console". That is total BS. There were articals abotu how evry country had camp outs for the 360 at there resective launchs but now that its the PS3 that launchs everyones saying they would never. This isn't the first console generation to have people wait for a whole day to get a console. The reason they are not camping for the PS3 is because the people that camp are the ones who turn around and sell them on Ebay and since no one will buy them they don't camp.

Australia is no way unwealthy or underpaid. I hope nobody believes that because it's completely untrue.

We are onE of the wealthiest continents on Earth due to our commodities and our minimum wage is in no way low pay.

Are you kidding the way the press made a big deal about the midnight launch and police were saying how against it they were. The difference is people here already have their system on lock and know the supply is there to pick it up. The preorder alone show people are buying it, they just dont wanna wait at midnight for a console they can walk in and get in the morning.

What the hell? are u out of ur mind? Australians are just as wealthy as u Americans, but are more intelegent to understand that PS3 is not worth the money at least till 2008. So just SHUT UP!
