This is the Ultimate reason why the Playstation 3 and the Brand is the strongest in all of video gaming HISTORY!!!.....
This is also the ULTIMATE reason why the PS3 IS better than the competition by a long shot!!!!... IMO
The Playstation 3 has been around for well over two years now and has definately found its stride in the gaming world. With some serious competition (Xbox 360 and...er..Wii), the gaming market is stronger than ever. Some of the greatest games ever created such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Resident Evil 5, Warhawk, Burnout Paradise and countless others have helped to drive the Playstation 3 to super stardom.
Over the past 2 years, we have noticed a strong stigma following the PS3 console. It is a feeling that doesn't shake easily and while most of it is not true, word of mouth travels faster on the internet than anywhere else. We are of course talking about the Xbox 360 and the legion of followers that constantly bash the Playstation console. So, rather than joining in the fanboyish behaviors that constantly flood the web such as 'our console is better because' or, ' you suck if you own (fill in the blank), we thought we would give you the reasons why the Playstation 3 is the console of now, and of the future, one bullet point at a time. Hold on to your butts, here we go....
So what do you need to know about the Playstation 3? Some of these points are obvious and should be considered common knowledge, while others may just enlighten you to new ideas you never knew about. Without further ado let's get started.
Proven Company Background:
We are not talking about the fact that Sony makes high-end electronics like TV's, DVD and Blu-Ray, and every other tech trinket you can think of. Rather, we bring this up because since the Playstation brand's inception in the late 90's, the Playstation has proven time and again that it has what it takes to take gaming far beyond the reaches of your imagination. The PSX (original Playstation) introduced CD's as a medium for gaming. While others had tried to implement it in the past and failed (*cough..Sega...cough*...CD-i), Sony showed the world that using the CD format was possible, and ushered in a new era of awesome games, larger than ever with full motion video which used to be a myth in gaming. It also enveloped the use of true third dimensional gaming in home consoles, once thought to only be capable on computers.
The Playstation 2 helped to launch the DVD era, creating more storage space for developers to work with, and new technology such as the 'Emotion' chip, which took gaming to new heights. The Playstation 3 is following the Playstation quest for new and better technology by introducing a number of new technologies. On the forefront is the Cell processor, basically a super computer on its own, the Cell is one of the most powerful processors in the world licensed for home use. It can handle everything from thinking, to cutting edge graphics. The Playstation 3 has also helped usher in the HD era, with each console supporting full Blu-Ray 2.0, HDMI connectivity and a wide range of video calibration options, the Playstation 3 is by far the most advanced, high definition system on the market.
Integrated Hard Drive:
Last generation, we began to see consoles introduce hard drives built in to there consoles (a la the original Xbox) which lead to a new ****of gaming. No longer were you forced to save games at designated checkpoints, but rather you could save anywhere, anytime with many games. The Playstation 3 builds upon this concept, offering a hard drive in absolutely every system sold. This benefits you for a number of reasons. First off, you no longer need to worry about purchasing additional memory cards at a premium to save your games. Second, and more importantly, games can now cache files to the hard drive, not only allowing for faster load times, but allowing for faster paced gameplay and improved graphics to boot.
The only downside to have a hard drive based system is that you can not take your saved games with you to a friends house or a 2nd console in your home. With the Playstation 3, this is not a problem. Most Playstation 3 systems have a built-in memory card reader that support Flash, SD and Memory Stick Duo cards respectively. Most modern households have these cards laying around the house for use in Digital cameras, cell phones and other devices. The Playstation 3 makes it easy to take your games with you, simply insert the memory card of your choice, and copy the game saves of your choice.
Not all Playstation 3 models have the memory card reader of course, the 40Gb and the early 20Gb models have cut the feature out in order to offer a more affordable gaming solution. In these cases, you can plug in any USB Flash drive and perform the same functionality. The Xbox 360 attempts to offer the same service, but you must own a 360 memory card to transfer files, leaving you with an old technology disadvantage.
Backwards Compatibility:
This one does not pertain to every one, but is still a factor all the same. Owners of the original Playstation 3 20Gb and 60Gb systems have the luxury of playing nearly all PS1 and PS2 titles are there Playstation 3 console, with full upscaling support to 1080p resolutions. Owners of the early 80Gb models can share this same enjoyment with a built-in software emulation.
Newcomers to the Playstation 3 are not quite as fortunate, since backwards compatibility for Playstation 2 titles has been removed. You can, however still enjoy ****c Playstation 1 titles on your console, not matter what model you own. If you do not have any PS1 titles, just visit the PSN Store to get some of the ****cs available now for download.
Proven Controller Design with Motion Technology:
Anyone who has played on the past Playstation systems will recognize the layout of the DualShock 3 or SixAxis controller with ease. In fact, there are very few changes that have been made since the initial design of the controller in the late 90's. The soft curves and ergonomic design offer optimum performance and comfort for the majority of gamers. Many would argue that the controller of the Xbox 360 is a better fit, but this is definately a preferance piece, and to say one is better than the other is nearly impossible. Everyone is different therefore everyone has there favorites.
The DualShock 3 offers full motions sensitivity as well. This feature has not been to put to the best of use in games released in the past, causing an onslaught of negative criticism stating the technology is inaccurate and unusable. However, with recent PSN releases such as Flower and the previous FlOw, developer 'ThatGameCompany' has proven that the motion technology of the DS3 has more potential than given credit for. Some might argue that the motion capabilities of the controller rival that of the Nintendo Wii, with the added benefit of using Bluetoothe connectivity, rather than an infrared sensor, causing your connection to break.
The controller is optimized for gaming of any genre, from fighting to shooters, platformers to puzzlers, the DualShock 3 is just what the doctor..er..gamer ordered.
Peripheral Compatibility:
Here is a feature that does not get much news. The Playstation 3 is as close to a full blown computer as you can get, including the connection of many peripheral devices. Did you know the system offers full printer support via the XMB or Linux? Why would you want a printer on a console? The Playstation 3 offers a picture library that allows you to upload your favorite family photos directly from your camera, CD or however you wish. You can now print these pictures directly from your console with a variety of print options you would expect to see. You can also print off pictures and articles you find using the Playstation's built-in web browser, so you can surf, shop and print from your couch. We'll talk a bit more about that one later. For a full list of supported printers, click here.
Most USB cameras can be connected effortlessly, allowing in-game video capture, such as snapshots while playing Burnout Paradise, or putting your face in the game a la Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. Also, with the connection of a USB camera, you can have a 6 way video chat with friends and family, basically anyone who owns a Playstation 3, for free. You can also create and edit your own home movies, or even make your own podcast, directly from the PS3.
External hard drives are also supported, so if you find yourself running low on drive space, you can transfer your pictures and downloaded video trailers and more to the external drive with the click of a button. One of the best parts is that the content you transfer is viewable on any PC, so you can share them with your friends with no compatibility issues.
You can also connect most MP3 players to your Playstation 3 and play directly from the unit, or transfer songs to Playstation 3 to play back anytime.
Of course, there is the all important Keyboard and mouse functionality as well. Most USB Keyboards and Mice can be connected with ease, allowing for fast information input and chat between friends. Logitech even makes a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo, specifically for the Playstation 3 system.
Bluetooth Integration:
The Playstation 3 offers full support of Bluetooth, a technology used to wirelessly connect modern devices such as keyboards, mice, headsets and more. Because of this, the Playstation 3 makes staying connected with friends incredibly easy. Most Bluetooth headsets used for cell phones and other devices will connect with ease, making a quick and easy way to stay in touch with friends, and talk smack during online game sessions. The technology is used for ALL Sony licensed DualShock 3 and SixAxis controllers, giving every gamer the wireless advantage.
Full Web Browser Support:
Yet another benefit of the Playstation 3 system is the integration of a full internet web browser. While not a perfect system, the browser allows you to surf your favorite websites, check your email, and watch YouTube videos with ease, and all of this on your big screen. A number of websites, including PS3Addiction, have been optimized for use on the Playstation 3, allowing for faster viewing of your favorite content.
The Playstation 3 also offers full DivX support, so if you have 'home' movies that you would like to download for 'free', you can do so from a number of sites. We're not talking about porn here people (although that works too) but rather the ability to download full length movies with ease. We do not condone illegal downloading, so make sure you own it....yeah.....moving on!
The Playstation Games Store:
This is the heart of the PSN (Playstation Network) for sure. Like clockwork, the PS Store receives gobs of new content every Thursday. From the normal Rock Band and Guitar Hero song packs, to DLC for sweet games like LittleBigPlanet and Burnout Paradise, the store is your one stop shop for something new to play. Game trailers and demos are released often as well as trailers for upcoming Blu-Ray and theatrical releases, keeping you in the know on anything you could want to know in entertainment.
Playstation Store also offers up Pulse, a free, weekly video that let's you in on all the top selling games, movies and news, giving you a great reference point for your next purchase. Qore is another PSN exclusive that gives you behind the scenes on the hottest upcoming games, access to demo's before anyone else and free games and content that are given away each month. Either way you choose, staying on top of the game is easy on the PSN.
The Playstation Store also offers up more original games than ever before. Unique experiences such as Flower, Noby Noby Boy, Everyday Shooter, Super Stardust: HD,and PAIN (just to name a few)can only be found on the Playstation Network. With new games coming out all the time, as well as ****c titles like BeJeweled 2, we guarantee you haven't played anything like it. The PSN is known for it's quality of games, and is now getting a large quantity of titles. This is by far, the best downloadable gaming experience available for unique games.
Along with the exclusive downloadable games, you can now purchase a variety of complete games, that are normally only offered on disc. Warhawk, Socom: Confrontation, TC: Endwar and Burnout Paradise are among the first titles to be offered, with many more planned. On a more casual note, many games for the PS1 can be found on the PSN as well such as Twisted Metal 2, Syphon Filter and many other cult ****cs.
The Playstation Network:
The heart and soul of this generation in gaming is the online experience. The Playstation 3 is by far the easiest and most affordable way to get connected. To start things off, PSN is free and only requires a high speed internet connection. You can connect directly to your router with an ethernet cable, or if you don't have your console close enough for a cable, you can use the built-in wireless option available. While this may not seem like a big deal, other consoles can charge around $99 just for the adaptor to use wireless and chargely monthly or yearly fees to use the online service.
The Playstation 3 is by far the fastest way to play games, with most titles allowing you to be in an online match in a matter of seconds, such as Call of Duty 4 or Resistance 2. Xbox, while providing a solid online, and sometimes preferred matchmaking system, can cause long wait times while waiting to be matched up with a group of players.
With around 90% of all Playstation 3 titles offering one form of online play or another, it is the fast and easy way to keep any game feeling fresh and new, without having to jump through hoops.
The Games:
Some of the best games in the world were introduced on the Playstation platform. Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII all made there home on the original Playstation while Tekken, Gran Turismo 2 and the God of War series were launched to stardom on the Playstation 2. This generation is no different, with some of the biggest and best games coming exclusively to the Playstation 3.
Ratchet & Clankand Uncharted have taken the 'platforming' genre to new heights, introducing new gameplay mechanics, realistic motions and controls and incredible stories. Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and Motorstorm have redefined the 'racing' genre, offering some of the most advanced racing technology the game industry has ever seen. Metal Gear Solid 4 has take 'tactical shooters' to new heights and Killzone 2 is about to take 'First Person Shooters' to level never thought possible before in less than a week.
With God of War III, Infamous, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5 and many others on the horizon exclusively for the Playstation 3, there has never been a bigger lineup of must-have games on any console in such a short period of time.
Not only does the Playstation 3 have the best exclusives around, it will also receive the hottest multiplatform titles such as Resident Evil 5, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Final Fantasy XIII. If ever there was a doubt that the Playstation 3 was not for you, let these games put that thought to rest.
The Reputation:
The Playstation brand is a force to be recond with. Time and again, Sony has proven they know gamers, and have provided cutting edge technology time and again. Sony believes that there consoles can have a 10 year lifespan, contrary to the average 5-6 years of there competitors (4 if you talk the original Xbox). This mentality is not only reassuring that your investment will stand the test of time, but it has been proven with the Playstation and Playstation 2 consoles (the latter is still running strong). While the investment can seem a bit steep in this time of economic peril, it is one that will carry you through many years of enjoyment, without fear of being left behind a year or two down the road.
Complete Entertainment Package:
With movies, games, web browsing, interconnectivity and even portability, there is nothing that can touch the Playstation 3 system on the market today in innovation. With constant revisions and additions, there is no limit to the systems capability and with the ability to upgrade your hard drive without having to buy proprietary components, you are one step closer to bringing you and your family to a life of next generation gaming. We hope this article has helped gamers realize the functionality of the Playstation 3 and if you were on the fences about picking one up, maybe this can help your buying decision. Thanks for reading.
