Backwards compatibility favors PS5

With all the false confidence from Lems on here, I think you guys are forgetting one thing. MS chose the worst generation to lose. Many gamers are in a ecosystem this gen due to digital purchases and PS4 games. They're not going to give that up for whatever you guys hype on here. How is MS going to convince anyone to switch?

It also favors PS5 because PS4 actually had good exclusives unlike the Xbone.

they were already in an ecosystem with the xbox 360. IF ms comes up with content that you can't refuse, you have no choice to switch.

@commander: digital sales weren't for all games back then. There's people with ALL digital libraries. Can anyone from gen 7 say the same? The biggest game MS gets from Bethesda is Elder Scrolls. The last iteration Skyrim came out 10 years ago and sold about the same as TLOU. The thing is, it needed like 6 platforms whereas TLOU only needed 2. I think you guys are overhyping Bethesda. There's no guarentee it's going to be this huge system seller. Halo was huge back then, look at it now. Elder Scrolls ain't GTA.

Skyrim sold over 30 Million Units while The Last of Us sold 17 million units. The two series are nowhere close when it comes to sales.

So, even if we take away sales from the Playstation 3, 4, and Switch, I would still stay Skyrim sold about 10-15 million on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

There's no reason to think Elder Scrolls VI won't be a system seller given the popularity of the franchise as a whole.

Yeah, it may not be GTA, but neither is anything in Sony's lineup either.

@caryslan2: No, both sold 20 million. Look on vgchartz and total up the amount on all platforms. Equals about 20 million. All the arrow to the knee memes made you guys think that game was bigger than it was.

skyrim sold 20 million copies in the first two years, the last of us 8. Most of the sales were made as a remaster on the ps4, and this generation didn't have a lot of games.

skyrim released at the end of teh golden age of gaming and it has major competition, tlou didn't have that competition.

You're comparing apples with oranges. The elder scrolls may not be gta, it's a much bigger name than the last of us and it will make players that love the franchise switch to xbox.

Several sources confirm that as of 2020, Skyrim's total sales are at 30 MIllion Units across all platforms.

My point is that Sony has its sellers as well and they have way more of them. People aren't going to abandon their digital libraries.

You know where you fail here? ever since MS announced BC on the XB1 cows have said on hundreds of occasions that no one buys a new console to play old games, therefore MS doesn't need to combat PS4's digital library.

@i_p_daily: context matters dude. MS was using backwards compatibility in the middle of the generation to sell Xbox One. This feature is more important during the start of the generation. Take that as a spin if you want.

Pretty piss poor effort, see another thing you don't understand, and that's that casuals make up most of the sales for consoles, and soon as the next Fifa, Madden, CoD etc comes out they drop the old game and smash the next one.

MS used BC to gain some pro consumer points, i mean they lost a shitload with the one reveal, and they used it as a point of difference between them and Sony.

The only reason Sony is doing BC is because they also want to be seen as pro consumer, MS is driving BC Sony are just following MS lead.

Also 95% of games are on both platforms, so by moving across one another you're not really losing a lot.

@Sagemode87: How desperate are Cows to downplay anything to do with Xbox? BC on xsx is better, and goes further back than any console....ever. Never mind the automatic improvements games get like HDR, and updates to games like gears 5 and Halo mcc. Hardcore cows never cared about BC apparently...we heard it countless times here. Now that Sony are providing basic BC with one generation, it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Well I'm guessing your 20M figure is based on these reports, that's no random source and you might want to check the date on that article. If VGchartz matches those figures then you now know how old they are.

Before using VGchartz again, do keep in mind that they stop reporting numbers when they stop coming in officially. Except for Xbox and VITA when they were basically speculating their numbers.

Gamepass, substantially more powerful hardware, better controller, better online infrastructure, more features, and a boatload of exclusives in the works with some of gaming’s top devs and franchises.

I’m not saying it will win them the race - but they will be taking a hefty chunk out of Sony’s market share like they did with the 360.

@navyguy21: backwards compatibility holds more weight at the beginning of the gen. Backwards compatibility wasn't a selling point from MS until the middle of this generation, well after people made the transition. TLOU2 online isn't out yet, wouldn't mind playing it on PS5. I still play Tekken, and Mortal Kombat. Ghosts has a co op mode. The situation is different than MS popping up midgen pushing back compat as a selling point while lacking exclusives. You're pushing there's hypocrisy here but the situations are different.

why are you comparing a game sold on 7 different consoles to a game that sold on 2?

its not fear. besides ps4 exclusives are selling over 10 million on one console is huge when there is so many other titles to choose from.

not saying elder scrolls is not huge either. fact is sony first party lately are getting the praise right now.

im sure the people that have the ps4 exclusives like bloodbourne or god of war are more excited for the sequels of sony first party games than elder scrolls.

to be the main focus on the console yes its irrelevant. to have it is just a plus. but it does not need bc to be successful.

not really im sure ps5 fans are happy it can play ps4 games. did it need to to be successful no. bc is not the reason why we upgrade to the next console.

ps3, 360, stadia, pc, ps4, xbox one, switch = 7. unless im wrong about stadia selling it. not sure if its a online service machine were you don't buy games just the service.
