PS3s guerrilla tactics really put me off. Let me explain my situation. I have had a 360 since launch and have had no desire or inclination to get a PS3, until recently. After seeing a Blu Ray movie in person and investing in a 61" hdtv. So now I am basically forced to get a Blu Ray for my investment, and according to all the reviews (cnet in particular) the PS3 is still the best BR player and has some version 2 update or something which I don't know what it does or is but makes it superior. I figure it makes sense since most of the other Blu Ray players on the market don't or can't receive the same firmware updates.

Anyhoo, I finally decide after the latest Killzone 2 buzz to jump in. While there will only be likely 2 or 3 games that I will outright purchase for the PS3 while I have it, KZ2 gave me just enough nudge. Here's my problem, I don't understand why they make it so difficult to adopt their console this gen. They make different SKUs, some with emulations, some with memory card readers, some with dual shock, some with 40 gigs, 80 gigs, etc. etc.

My particular issue is ...they offer to put all this stuff in a machine and then market it as the best out there and slap a price worthy (in their minds) of doing that, and then when it doesn't sell to their expectations they discontinue SKUs, cut off features, etc. just to cut their own costs for their own failures. Now me, who has an extensive PS2 library, will have to go fork out for an overpriced used PS3 60 GB just so I dont feel like I got the gimped version. And I know why they discontinued the BC versions because they want to go and force their new software down peoples throats and close the casket on the PS2 because it was so successful it handicaps them this gen.

But that's not fair. And its not right.

i know wat you mean, but i dunno how it feels cuz i got the PS3 60GB version at launch. there has always been the question of how much cheaper the PS3 would be without the blu-ray feature and if it wud be worth it or not. i gotta say though, 60GB runs out fast, i only have 20GB left:evil:

Yeah and on average they are like $100 over the suggest retail. But let me ask you, what games up to this point would you recommend I buy for the PS3 besides Killzone. And if you can consider that I only buy games with high replayabillity.

The funny thing is, I chose the 60GB over the 40GB because I really wanted BC. But GOW 2 is the last PS2 game I played on it and that was over a year ago. Still, the PS4 should have full PS3/2/1 BC from the start and throughout it's entire lifespan.

There are only 2 SKUs... The 80GB and the 160GB. Is it really that complicated?

And if you have an extensive PS2 library, doesn't that mean you already have a PS2? Can't you just play your PS2 games in your PS2?

"force their new software down peoples throats"

But aren't you buying a PS3 partially because of blu-ray? :|

I agree that not having BC on newer models is kinda lame (thank god for my BC model) but it's not impossible to get a BC model if that's what you really want.

I find it impossible for Sony not to reintegrate PS2 BC by the time PS2 end production. We will see.

No there are not. I'm talking about total, not just the ones they are actively producing. And yes, it is complicated for the consumer who just wants to get standard features no matter what "version" they get. Of course I can play my PS2 but I would prefer not to waste an input, pull out wires and boot up a machine that for the most part is only an occasional form of video game entertainment. Especially when there are others with the same machine I have that don't have to put up with not having it.

Well too bad. They sold BC PS3's and no one bought them. Should have bought them before.

LOL Ok Sony spokesperson. Maybe no one bought them because they were OVERPRICED and struggling from a lack of good software. But hey, that's my fault too.

Yes, I find it annoying. Sony is totally insensitive to people's desires. I love their software, I like their hardware. I love their network and their support of original IPs. But their business tactics are braindead. Want a real shocker? Look at the price of a brand new PS2 slim. It's asinine. Nobody's gonna buy that, nobody.

No one complains about the 360's lackluster backwards compatibility.

See if Sony puts BC in the PS3s again, the price of the thing will go up and guess what? More people will complain about the price being too high.

MS does not include BC because they know it increases the price of the 360, thats why their consoles are cheaper.

If you want to play PS2/Xbox games flawlessly, then go out and get a PS2/Xbox.

[/QUOTE Did Microsoft go and make one console with backsards compatibility and without it. Are they discontinuing a SKU originally offered at launch and offering a next generation version without that feature? That's fine if Sony decided they want to make a next gen with BC or make it without it. But don't go and discontinue the feature which is a major selling point because you overpriced your console and the previous console has a more impressive library than your current one so you want to force people to stop playing PS2 games and cut costs at the same time.

Simply getting a PS2 is out of the question because PS2 and PS1 games look like crap with no upscaling on a HDTV. I agree BC should of been left in.. They could of gotten rid of some of the other useless features.. Like the card readers or teh cell. Yeah teh cell is useless. XBOX360 BC can be excused because lets face it there wearn't many XBOX games worth playing anyway. PS2 was where it was at.

Yeah it's a hassle.

I wish the PS3 did have BC just because I want it, but since I've had my PS3 I haven't played any PS2 games.

Warhawk is online only and has great replayability

Resistance 2

MotorStorm Pacific Rift

Burnout Paradise

All good replayability.....Denver FTW (well not the football team but the city)

360 has BC but there are 2 things to remember.

1) You need a HDD and Internet access to download updates for most X-Box (1) games.

2) Not all of those emulation updates work well.

I have no idea if Sony is working on Emulation software but PS2 games have been notoriously difficult to emulate in a proper manner.

Playing old games on 360/PS3 is a dream, the graphics alone make them worth playing again. It sucks hard that both decided to drop it, especially considering how well MS were doing

Still a huge hassle. At least the 60GB and 80GB(MGS 4 Bundle) play PS2 games outta the box without all the hassle of doing all that.

This is like complaining the 64 is not BC with the SNES and NES and complaining about how terrible SNES and NES graphics look compared to 64's.

If you want to play PS2 games, try to find a BC PS3(its pricey), buy a PS2(game in SD not HD).

Still the list expanded very nicely over time and emulation was 90% of the time perfect. Really wish MS got some of those remaining popular titles on

Yeah I understand where you are coming from with the comparison to SNES, etc. The point is that the price of a console is going to drop over the duration of its cycle, except never before has a console dropped over time and then a core feature removed to cut the costs to the company. For the limited library that XBox had, those games all play well over 360. Meanwhile all of the 360 consoles are standard with how they deal with BC. Meanwhile, PS3 just takes the feature out altogether even though they are still producing emotion chips for PS2s, and why? To save their production costs. It urks me that somebody else with a PS3 can go and put in a PS2 disc and it works, and meanwhile I have to go hunt for a used, overpriced discontinued one to have the same feature as them.

Hmm, and MS stuck to their end of the deal, they doubled the games that could be played, 51% of the library was playable. Had Sony not dropped BC, MS wouldnt have followed:( I mean just one more update would be nice
