Wow guys.. I think I just lost all respect for Microsoft.

If you get banned from Xbox Live on the Xbox One you will lose access to any and all game licenses tied to your account.

Now this has been one of the biggest questions regarding the Xbox One: What happens to your games when you get banned if they're tied to your Xbox Live account? Well, now you have an answer...you lose your games.

With the question posed by a Mark Doherty to the Xbox One support staff on Twitter, he asked them If my XBOX LIVE account was banned, would I continue to have access to my XBOX ONE games?, to which the response from the official Xbox Support staff was...

"If your account is banned, you also forfeit the licenses to any games that have licenses tied to it as listed in the [Terms of Use]."

Really.. you guys think its ok for Microsoft to stop you playing all the games you purchased because you get banned from Xbox Live! Dont get me wrong I think they should ban people for cheating and such BUT to take away all the games they bought, potentially thousands of pounds, is just ridiculous!

Aaaaand people are defending this policy, with the usual 'then just don't get banned' reply.

Because every ban ever, has been absolutely justified and fair, right.

No, there has never been a case of people ganging up on the opposing top player and reporting the hell out of him for nothing, or anything like that.

Yeah.

Because losing all your games for something that you said on an online game match, is definitely justified. Definitely.

However this means they can take your games away for any reason they see fit. It means you don't own a damn thing that you buy. And if you look at the ban section in the Xbox forums, most of the bans are actually regarding profile violations.

At the moment you can get banned if 3 players in a game mark you as a bad player / abusive / negative rating. You don't actually have to do anything wrong.

I can see Microsoft getting sued for this kind of thing. They cant just do as they wish, consumer rights groups would tear this apart.

I have had a temporary ban playing COD immediately after a zombie match where a group of kids have threatened to get me banned. Never been banned before and never done anything wrong. The mods or whoever it is just ban you because its faster than actually investigating anything.

Actually they post wanting to know why they were banned and the XBLPET's respond with the reason. 9.5 out of 10 times its generally for obscene words in their profile or dumb shit like changing the color of their avatar. I even received a temp ban one time for promoting my favorite beer. According to them, its a controlled substance and against their TOU. Its ok have marijuana call signs though in Modern Warfare 2 though.

so you went back and bought 3 more xbl subscriptions instead of just playing on your ps3 where there is no enforcement?

fishy story.

How am I supposed to post proof? Seriously. There is no real reason for me to lie, it happened and talking to other people online its a fairly common thing to happen. Maybe its something that happens on COD Zombies. I don't know anyone outside that community that it has happened to but then I don't play many online games.

Do you honestly believe MS will check all reports, it takes time to check this and time is money. Its cheaper to just issue a temporary ban. I'm just ranting online, I just keep hearing negative details about the Xbox One release and it annoys me. I loved the PS2 but changed to the 360 as I thought Sony were too big headed and took a lot of liberties with the console, "We know better than the consumers" mentality. Microsoft seem to be taking that route with the Xbox One but in a much bigger way!! I'm all for going digital media and even removing the used games market but some of MS's decisions seem ridiculous, this being one of them if they don't change it before release.

The only people who ever get banned like this are people who mod games to cheat online, and pirates.

No big loss.

Major Nelson has already come forward and said that you will not lose access to your games if you get banned...

In this thread we see once again the classic majority argument: "if you're not doing anything wrong why does it matter?" and, as always, the reason that it matters is that I don't buy your definition of wrong, or theirs, and don't expect either of you to hold even to that standard consistently or impartially regardless.

Here is what it says about Xbox live bans on the official site.

Console bans

Xbox consoles may be permanently prevented from connecting to Xbox LIVE for one or more violations of the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use. Consoles can be banned from Xbox LIVE for several reasons including, but not limited to, the following reasons:

  • Console tampering: Physically opening the Xbox console and modifying it to play illegitimate software.
  • Online fraud: Attempting to social engineer users, take over Xbox LIVE accounts, or perform other fraudulent activities.
  • Repeat egregious violations: Multiple actions taken on accounts on the console by the enforcement team for disrupting the service or impacting users.

Customer Support for Xbox LIVE cannot undo an Xbox LIVE suspension for a console. Xbox LIVE console suspensions may also include permanent suspensions of Xbox LIVE accounts as well.

These rules are not that hard to follow. Notice repeat egregious violations is probably the most vague. I'm pretty sure that part is a three or more strikes sort of deal. You have to be a pretty big cretin to achieve a banning through that means. I'm pretty sure they warn you also.

That's bullshit and like I said earlier, most bans are actually over profile violations. I received a 30 day ban for doing nothing other than expressing my craft beer hobby in my profile in hopes of meeting other gamers with the same interest. According to mictodoft though, that is in violation of their Terns of Use. Go log into the official Xbox forums ban section and you will see that most violations have nothing to do with cheating at all. Almost every last one of them is for either language or topics in your profile that violate the TOU or making alterations to your avatar.

Right. And, excepting that vague portion you mentioned (speaking of which, why can't I be a "pretty big cretin" on Xbox live? That's what the whole service is founded on) those rules don't seem like a particularly big deal if they are judiciously applied. My point is that I find it unlikely all the way to practically impossible that they will be all the time, and, given that the stakes are now raised (access to your game library versus just access to LIVE), that's a big deal. Big enough to bitch about on forums, certainly.
