Just hours after finding out that Supreme Commander won't allow custom maps more damming news comes for the PC modding community. Electronic Arts today announced that the PC version of Battlefield Bad Company 2 will not have any modding tools released, claiming the server side 'logic' is controlled by the dedicated server software.

Great, that means you'll be able to setup the game just as you want right? Well no. Electronic Arts have decided they will not distribute the dedicated server software to the general public. The battlefield blog states - "There are many factors for why we have decided this with the biggest factor being security & integrity of our game & Dedicated Servers."

This means, whileyou will be able to rent servers, you won't be able to create your own using a VPS or server you have in your basement. The conditions on what companies will be given the software have not yet been disclosed, but it's likely to serious limit competition and thus drive up prices for server admins. EA may choose to sell the dedicated server software to certain intrested companies, although that is only speculation.

So in summary:You will be able to get hosted dedicated servers, but won't be able to host them. You can tweak settings such as bans, map rotations and the likes, but you will not be able to use custom maps or advanced mods. For EA to be able to pull off a solution which the likes of server admins will be satisfied with, the tweaks that can be done will have to be vast and inclusive of plenty of game features.

As with a lot of recent moves eliminating dedicated servers, the core reason EA does not want to give out the dedicated server software is piracy. All the previous games have had the software hacked to be able to allow pirated copies play on private servers. However the software has been made and will be distributed to server hosts, so I would place a bet on it leaking out.

EDIT:[IMPORTANT] No Self Hosted Dedicated Servers rather than the previous title no dedicated servers

Misleading title is misleading. :| You still get Dedicated Servers, just no mods which I really don't care about. Sure mods can sometimes be great like Team Fortress or Counter-Strike but I really just want to play the game the developers created.

First off all, dedicated servers are still fully in. Don't lie.

Mods is...well, depressing to say the least.

Meh, I never use mods in a BF game anyways, but I guess it sucks for some people. I still can't wait for the game though

They said no mod tools, so that may or may not mean, no custom maps, they may release a level editor of sorts.

Yes it is, BC2 still has dedicated servers and it never stripped out features of BC1 because it was never released in the first place.

No mod support does suck but i'm glad we still get dedicated servers as bfbc2 would suck would p2p and matchmaking. And they actually took the extra effort for the pc version increasing the player size from 24 to 32 as well enhancing the graphics and including dx9,dx10, and dx11 support and giving prone exclusively for the pc. and map packs will no doubt be $10-$15 on consoles but will be free on the pc which is already $10 cheaper off the bat. Of course being an fps the mouse and keyboard will be the best way to play this.

Actually all the extra content for Bad Company 1 was free. One thing I just don't understand is why DICE doesn't make the console version 32 v 32, I mean they are already using dedicated servers for the console games too, why not just up the player count?

Or atleast 16v16. I think that is more reasonable.

No, it does not. There will still be mods, there just won't be tools for modding. That means that you could still see things like maybe weapon skins or sound packs, but you won't see Bad Company 2 turned into a Star Wars game.

Almost 100% sure it's hardware limitations of the consoles.

DarkGamer007

That's such a pisspoor excuse to not care about mods.

Developers create games for money, gamers create mods to improve the game and to add longevity. When you don't have mods to add longevity, look what happens to games (look at every console game) You either get bombarded with overpriced DLC or the communities die within months, only popular shooters survive.

What's wrong with playing a mod? It's not like your disrespecting the developer, it's a win/win for both. They get the money they care about, and gamers get a lot of bang for their buck.

I just don't see how people can even insinuate mods are a bad thing. Since when was being given more options a bad thing?

EA will own a lot of dedicated servers and will not be distributing the software required to allow people to set up dedicated servers on their own. The game will not support mods but the servers will allow for a variety of config options. Presumably this means people can buy or rent servers from EA that would still be operated by EA but would presumably afford people with admin on the server, allowing them to set the rules and whatnot. In other words, They don't want to give out the server software to pirates who host private servers. You can still rent the servers officially the same way you can with the other Battlefield games.

A couple months ago, PC gamers were showering DICE with love because, unlike Infinity Ward, they were supporting PC gaming. Funny how I'm not seeing that love in this thread, just like how DICE was bashed for selling out to consoles with BF1943 and BC2 before BF3.

I can only hope this is because DICE doesn't expect the game to last long PC because they have BF3 in the works.

och well...Red Orchestra 2 and Natural Selection 2 are the only 2010 multiplayer FPSes that are looking appealing to me.

Kind of quick jump to conclusions? / Taking quite a stab at the hermits rather fast. Dedicated servers are there, in just the same sense they are in BF2 / 2142. As for mod support, that is quite a disappointment, hopefully it will be rectified in BF3. Mind you DICE and EA aren't renowned for their BF mod support, despite such excellent modifications being produced.

So basically when EA decides to release BFBC3 they'll just take their Dedicated Server LOGIC off, and nobody can play BC2 online anymore. Nice.

"If EA pulls it off correctly you can expect the system to be used across a range of future games. As with a lot of recent moves eliminating dedicated servers the core reason EA does not want to give out the dedicated server software is piracy."

This will probably be true with BF3 also then.

As long as Steam will not be mandatory to BC 2 in PC, is fine, because mod tools will come with BF 3 next years; at the end BC 2 is only a console port snack with dedicated servers support.

Love how this is being ignored. Great job, SW.
