and neither is Fester's Quest. screw screwattack, they couldn't come up with a legit "top 10 hardest NES games list" if the AVGN gave everyone koolaid. This is what the list should've looked like.

1 - Ninja Turtles 1

2 - Mike Tyson's Punchout

3 - Megaman

4 - Yo Noid!

5 - Bart Vs. The Space Mutants

6 - Silver Surfer

7 - Super Mario Brothers (yeh!)

8 - Castlevania

9 - Ghosts n Goblins

10 - Rygar

I don't think you have any idea what you are talking about. Battletoads frequently had those speeder bike levels where you had to dodge and/or jump walls. These levels were way too long to expect you to memorize them in a couple attempts AND were so fast that even if you did memorize them, the slightest mistake resulted in instant death. And it was instant death any time you crashed too, so any time those levels popped up the game came to a screeching halt.

But you think Mario is harder?

You are incorrect, Battletoads is renowned for it's very punishing difficulty.

Definitely one of the most difficult games I've played.

I have playied alot (if not most) of the games people claim was hard on the NES, and I often disagree when people claim the difficulty comes from poor controles.

However Battletoads? that is one hard game, completing it alone might be within the realms of doable, but co-op? Ive never seen nor heard about anyone doing that.

heck I found TNMT and the first batman game to have a "good" difficulty, and the mega man games fairly easy, but battletoads and ninja guiden, those games alone could almost bring me to tears of frustration, I never completed those two (they are the only two games in my collection left I never completed)

Finishing the guardian legend some months ago those are the only two darn games I doubt I will ever finish.

Worst part is that I cant say they are "broken" or even unfair, they are just... really really hard. Alot of the games on that top 10, I am not sure I agreed with, but the last 3 (I think it was) I agree with completely -.-

I remember playing Battletoads back in the day... What a great game... But indeed very difficult... To say it's not hard must mean you have completed it many times I assume... But some of the games you listed there aren't that hard in my personal opinion.

A good number of games on that list really aren't that hard. Mario had the warp zones that sped the game up considerably, plus it was all pattern based with the exception of the Bowser fights. You knew where a goomba was going to be, you knew where the spinning fire rods were going to be. If you couldn't figure out the pattern that doesn't mean that it is hard, just that you didn't see what made it manageable.

Castlevania? The original? Not a chance. Memorize paterns, kill, repeat. Tough, sure, but impossible?

Bart vs. series is just broken. They disqualified it as they rightfully should.

Tyson? Well, up until Tyson the game was challenging but beatable. Tyson himself was really the broken guy in the game.

Megaman is another patern based platformer, it also had one massive glitch that allowed you to kill anything with a few Elec Beams, not hard at all.

Rygar isn't hard, it just sucks that you have to beat it in one sitting. That's the difficulty, it has nothing to due with the game being hard, it is simply inconvenient.

Now I will admit that Fester's Quest wasn't hard as it was hard to play, much like the Bart vs. series. It shouldn't be on the list.

If I had to add a game or two 8 Eyes would be on there, do the mansions in the wrong order and the game is unwinnable. Where the heck is 1942 / 1943, one of the most awesome and hard games ever made. Clash at Demonhead was a tough game as well. Ikari Warriors without the cheat code?

Ninja Gaiden?

Gaiden was on the initial list and should rightfully be on there. Granted it was more for cheapness, but still, a damn hard game. That's why I didn't mention it, there was no need to :)

This. NG usually gets on hard lists by default. It's automatic, kind of like how "Red Wings" are always in the playoffs. Just always happens.

Silver surfer isn't hard, it is just poorly designed and incredibly broken. There is a difference between hard for the sake of being hard, and hard because the game is ultimately broken. Broken games do not count as being hard.

I agree with Festers Quest not being hard. You just have to patient. Though it was awhile ago, I don't remember it being that hard to beat, and I'm not that good.

Now, if you think you are so good at battletoads, you should be shoe-in for the challenge he makes at the end! Win that prize!

I don't think Battletoads is that hard either. The bike levels were a pain, but they weren't that hard at all. Sure you'll hit a few game overs before you beat the game - but I'd consider Ninja Gaiden and any Mega Man game on the NES to be much harder. I've actually beaten Battletoads. Sure, it took my "all", but I can give dozens of other games my full effort and not beat them.

Maddie_Larkin

My brother and I played Battletoads co-op practically weekly when we were kids. With lots of practice and excellent synchronization, it's possible to actually make the game easier in co-op mode than single player. The problem is the Clinger Winger bug in level 11 which causes the second player to not move, so he just sits there and loses all of his lives. Great game but definitely buggy. ...I guess the game was so hard that the pre-release game testers never made it that far in co-op.

Um, Mega Man games don't surpass Battletoads, as long as you know what weapon to use against the bosses they go down easily and it takes a few tries to get the levels right, just the last few stages are the only things that are really hard.

Hell, I replay Mega Man games easily while I struggle with Battletoads.

Yes, their list was pathetic. But most of their lists are.

Battle toads really isn't that hard. It certainly is NOT harder than Silver Surfer or Ghosts n Goblins.

Festers quest is more annoying than it is hard.

Ninja Gaiden 3 is far more difficult than 1 (limited continues).

No Castlevania on the list? 1 and 3 are some of the hardest games ever made. I disregarded the list after that.

I think 90% of NES games were cheap rather than difficult. You'd have to rely on memorization of enemy patterns or level layouts to survive, instead of relying on skills. Games like Battletoads prove that.

It's the one with the cycle thing that you ride while the spinning purple thing chases you. With the original NES controller it's beatable, but still tough until you practice it alot.
