I've seen dozens upon dozens of threads stating the superiority of the PC platform.. but I'm actually curious as to how much you paid for that "superiority"

I'm no judge either way (..own two laptops and a desktop) only my second laptop can handle decent gaming. Will be upgrading eventually but not now.

$450 for a laptop for work.

It sucks overall, but can do some light gaming. Now that I can access Humble Bundles, indies, and a few seventh gen games all on the go, it's quite fun.

I'm thinking about buying a rig but the price doesn't seem worth it to me at this point in my life.

i splashed out on a gaming laprtop. a desktop would have been better but i have to move around a lot so i wouldnt get to use it much. so laptop it was.

all in about 2k euros. a good chunk of that was for the 960GB SSD because i am clinically insane :P. i didnt want to compromise on the GPU as upgrading laptop GPUs is messy at best or impossible. i didnt splash out for a dual GPU setup though because i dont like SLI/crossfire. so i got a 780m which, as the time, was the single strongest graphics chip for a laptop available.

before that i bought a laptop for 500 euros and that surprised me with its gaming chops. it was an AMD A6 3420M laptop and it could play games like skyrim pretty well at the screens native res (1366X768). if a game was good at using the 4 cores on the CPU side then it did a great job (so funnily enough skyrim ran and looked better on the laptop compared to oblivion...though both were certainly playable). if you need a laptop, want to play some games on it but are on a really tight budget then a laptop using a good APU is certainly worth a look.

one of the great things about the PC platform though...it comes in many forms.

I payed more for PC, around $1000, as it is the superior product. Just like how a Mercedes costs more than a Civic, and is a superior product.

I payed around $1200 total for my entire setup. That's including a new desk, chair, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and speakers. I could have spent much, much less, and still have gotten the same performance honestly. The computer parts themselves were really cheap at microcenter.

I think you'll eventually have the space, eventually in life. Maybe not now, I know my old place I didn't have space, but that was before my time on Gamespot.com. The question is, will the old lady let you have LAN parties, lol.Something to consider when you're moving to your next place (or the place after that).

You also have to have friends and family interested in playing whatever it is you LAN, as well. I notice Pizza and Wings works well to get the party started.

I have a friend who has six gaming rigs, but he's hard to the core always dismantling this and that. He's never happy it seems like...then again, he juggles playing games and specs. Done a couple parties at his house, but he's cheap and doesn't provide refreshments so the shindigs end early. Plus, for RTS games, we usually don't need the extra juice.

Many of the components from my current gaming PC dates back from 2009:

The original PC from 2009: Phenom II X3 720BE (unlocked to quadcore), Radeon HD 5770, 8gb DDR3-1600, 500gb SATA HDD, PSU, Gigabyte motherboard, case, Win 7 OEM, cost around $760.

The monitor, Logitech Z-2300 2.1 speakers, keyboard/mouse, were from the 2005 PC that was being replaced.

I added a 1080p TV (from the kitchen) as part of a dual-monitor setup.

In 2011, I replaced the HD 5770 with a GTX 560Ti for $219. That drove the price spent so far to $979.

Then, in 2013, I replaced the Phenom II X3 with an FX-8350. That plus ASUS motherboard totaled $271. Everything else is still the same, even the original Win 7 OEM. Total since 2009: $1250.

I'll be upgrading my video card shortly. So add the price of a GTX 780 or maybe an R9 290.

The older parts didn't go to waste. I have enough spare parts and built another, less-capable gaming PC which my daughter is delighted with.

Edit:

Also in 2013, I bought a 14" ASUS ROG G46VW which has an i5 dualcore with hyperthreading and a GTX 660m. Not really the most powerful for 1080p. But, it's quite plenty for the native 1366x768 LCD screen. $799.

The same games I play on my gaming desktop, I also play on the ASUS lappie when I'm not home (except the flight sims). Feels great to be able to do that.

These were my parts. I got them really cheap at microcenter. They had great sales specials at the time.

$47,000. had been less but saw thief running on high end and needed a monitor capable of real 100+ fps. can't hook a powerful pc up to a shit monitor. makes no sense. 120 for the keyboard. 80 for the mouse. 450 for psu and cooling plus case. 300 for a decent desk chair. 250 for a sound card.

It's hard to say. I always sell my old stuff before doing an upgrade. I just upgraded to a 780 ti from GTX 680's, and sold my old GPU's so I only spent $50 out of pocket... but I bought those two 680's for like $650... but I sold my 580's for them... and so on.

If I went out and bought my PC part by part right now It would probably cost around the $1200 range.

It depends, but probably too many to list. However, I have old favorites that are constantly being requested and therefore the most popular at the parties, usually Command and Conquer (Various), Starcraft, Starcraft II( HeartotS or WingoL), Warcraft II, Warcraft III, Diablo 1-3...primarily RTS games, but sometimes FPS or Action RPGs, etc. Those are a fraction of the most popular games that people seem the get the most laughter and fun. Yes, it also means I had to buy multiple copies of Blizzard games like SCII and Diablo 3 which was annoying.

To be fair to consoles, I also have various machines for console LAN too, but those don't happen as much as they used too. Games like Rockband 3, Singstar, and Streetfighter took over (although I have those all running at the same time in different rooms).

How does everyone pour so much money into their PC's?

1100 for PC and 300 for 120 games.

400 (?) For Xbox 360, 420 for Live, and 1000 for 20 games.

Regret not going straight for PC.

About £1300, sold a bunch of tech stuff I had lying around and an old laptop which covered about £700 of it so I was pretty happy with the cost, especially considering that it's got a 780ti and a 3570k in it.

Total? Id have to say about $2200, but that includes a new GPU and RAM i just bought.

The real question is what do i get for that $2200, and i think it was money well spent. For a cheap $2200, i get

  1. Current PC exclusives
  2. Every past PC game..........ever
  3. PS2 games
  4. Dreamcast games
  5. N64 games
  6. PS1 games
  7. SNES games
  8. NES games
  9. Xbox games
  10. Gamecube games
  11. Console/PC multiplats
  12. Mods
  13. In game music on all current an retro games
  14. In game DVR
  15. Cross game chat
  16. Larger multiplayer counts
  17. Community patches when the devs cant.
  18. Every game in HD and widescreen
  19. Higher FPS
  20. Do everything that consoles can do and more
  21. Can play on my tv with a controller or mouse and keyboard

To be fair. Almost everyone on here doesn't know how to shop deals so they are spending money they don't need to.

775$ for all this January 2013

i7 3770K - 100$

PNY GeForce GTX 670 2GB - 250$

256 GB Samsung 840 SSD - 150$

NZXT Phantom Case - 80$

MSI Z77A-G45 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - 80$

Thermaltake TR2 TR-700 700W - 50$

CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM - 30$

DVD-Burner - 15$

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus - CPU Cooler - 20$

So I have had my personal PS4 for almost 1.5 years for less than 800$

4770k for 200

One 780ti for like 460

Another 780ti for like less than 450-75 dollars in store credit so like 375

500r Tower for like 80

MB 150

In the end I know I got my computer for much less money than it was worth. Two 780ti for around 800 dollars.
