Many of the components from my current gaming PC dates back from 2009:
The original PC from 2009: Phenom II X3 720BE (unlocked to quadcore), Radeon HD 5770, 8gb DDR3-1600, 500gb SATA HDD, PSU, Gigabyte motherboard, case, Win 7 OEM, cost around $760.
The monitor, Logitech Z-2300 2.1 speakers, keyboard/mouse, were from the 2005 PC that was being replaced.
I added a 1080p TV (from the kitchen) as part of a dual-monitor setup.
In 2011, I replaced the HD 5770 with a GTX 560Ti for $219. That drove the price spent so far to $979.
Then, in 2013, I replaced the Phenom II X3 with an FX-8350. That plus ASUS motherboard totaled $271. Everything else is still the same, even the original Win 7 OEM. Total since 2009: $1250.
I'll be upgrading my video card shortly. So add the price of a GTX 780 or maybe an R9 290.
The older parts didn't go to waste. I have enough spare parts and built another, less-capable gaming PC which my daughter is delighted with.
Edit:
Also in 2013, I bought a 14" ASUS ROG G46VW which has an i5 dualcore with hyperthreading and a GTX 660m. Not really the most powerful for 1080p. But, it's quite plenty for the native 1366x768 LCD screen. $799.
The same games I play on my gaming desktop, I also play on the ASUS lappie when I'm not home (except the flight sims). Feels great to be able to do that.
