the reason ps3 cost $600 at release was because the blu ray. if sony had included a geforce 8800 equivalent card in the ps3 instead of a geforce 7800 and blu ray, we would have seen significantly improved graphics in ps3 games and would have easily beat the 360 graphically. ps3 would have been able to at least run crysis. so what does SW think, was their decision a wise one?

hmmm i thought that it was a risky move on sony part back then. but when you look at it now, blu ray is picking up pretty well... ps3 top exclusives also has the slighter edge on graphics compared to the 360. so i'd say it was a good decision.

Well, what he meant was that without BluRay the player will have to swap DVDs during the game. Now isn't that fun?

i mentioned crysis to show the scope of the games that would be able to run. but with an 8800 all games would see a performance increase in resolution/fps/AA.

Blu Ray was the reason I bought one. I wanted a player and this came with a games console. Never regretted it. I'd have bought one by now anyway, but I think the Blu Ray player is an absolute bonus and the games are not underpowered for mine so I don't see why I'd choose the other option.

it's not as fun as having to wait 20 minutes to install most games. number of games requiring install on ps3 >>>>> number of games requiring swapping on 360. i think i win this argument.

blu-ray was the right choice.

the RSX cell combo is fine.

their biggest mistake was the lack of thirdparty developer support. they basically said, heres a brand new technology that requires completely different thinking than previously that we know will cost you millions simply to 'harness' now make us games. oh yeah and pay us royalties too.

No install required in most games. There's no multiple disc games on the PS3.

who cares dude and with a 8800gtx inside ps3 it would not have made a big difference becuse ps3 and xbox is limited by 1 huge factor the 512mb ram it is stuck with.

Yes they do... They duplicate data on the bluray so it loads faster.

But for the price of a blu-ray player back then they could probably give it 512 mb of RAM And fix that problem in a more conventional way.

For some reason games on the PS3 load slow as hell... So devs duplicate data to make it load faster or something along those lines.

But i guess a faster DVD player, more RAM and a 8800GTX could solve all of that

they load slow as hell so they HAVE to duplicate data just so youre not sitting through ridiculous loads. and even then and even after and install some games still take forever to load.

someone told me uncharted had almost no loading, that is a total lie. it has some of the worst loading ive ever seen. same with force unleashed and madden 09. the only game i cant complain about the loading is GOW3.

maybe its the blu-ray maybe its not but im willing to bet its that and the separated nature of the memory

Let me put it this way. Choosing an 8800gt nearly all PS3 games would have been at 1080p maybe with 2-4xAA and usually at 60fps instead of nearly all games at 720p or lower no AA most of times and usually 30fps So if i had to choose between swapping 1 disc every 4-5 hours or much better graphics i choose graphics

I can't imagine why many gamers would pick Blu-ray over a better GPU. :( As much as I appreciate fine 1080p movies.

The is more to it than just the GPU that prevents consoles from running Crysis. They would need more RAM for starters.

Bluray, cause even by todays standards in the pc world the ps3 holds up quite well. Heck since Crysis most devs have taken it easy cause it sold like crap cause mose pc gamers didn't even have what was needed to run it. But having bluray, gave me an all in one home theater hub.

If it had what your asking TC without bluray built in, I wouldn't have bought the ps3 and would have stayed with pc gaming. But by the way Sony did the ps3, they gave me a great device to buy that wasn't like what I already had, or like the competition. If I didn't want bluray I would have bought a 360, matter afact I didn't buy a 360 when it first launched cause it didn't have a hddvd player builit into it.

you're referring to the RROD right? well yes that was embarrassing for them but the fact still stands that the 360 had great hardware for a console that came out in 2005. you would expect the ps3 to have 2006 technology because it came out a year later but they decided to use a weak graphics card in order to shove blu-ray down our throats.

Sad thing is that most ps3 gamers will be playing Crysis 2 with a overall better visual quality than most pc gamers did when they first played crysis lol. Heck most in here right now still say they can't even play half of the pc games that come out now much less crysis on decent settings.

not like MS has ever come last in power anyhow.

PS2 was weaker than the Gamecube AND came out 1 year ahead.

looks like history repeats itself, except coming out a year ahead for MS didn't yield them the weakest console.

That and the rather weak hardware they put in the 360. You'd think a multibillion dollor corporation like MS would take more risks with the hardware. They could have took a larger initial hit on console profits and made the hardware better. Withing a few year it would have blown the PS3 away if they made it clearly more powerful. Think 1GB RAM and With the equivalent of 8800

RAM is not as important on consoles as it is on PC. consoles don't have a resource hogging operating system running in the background with antivirus/utorrent slowing things down. when it comes to graphics, the greatest improvement would be seen from a gpu upgrade. also the 8800 was not available when the 360 was released. MS put in the best gpu available at the time. the same cannot be said for sony.

Funny, that was exactly what i said...
