Before Crysis?

It seems like any time anyone declares that a game has good graphics, it is compared to Crysis. I've never played it, so I'm not one to judge, but I was really wondering what everyone compared everything to BEFORE Crysis, or is Crysis the first game to genuinely stand far far above all other games in terms of graphics, and be the game that all graphics are compared to?

It has been the most graphically outstanding game since its Launch in 2007, before, i believe, there was always a graphical leap year after year. 2004 was Doom 3 (to some HL2), 2005 F.E.A.R. (don't know really), 2006 Gears of War. Was the last game on PC to really push the limits in graphics, now its all limited due to lack of resources or multiplats.

God of War? Hell no, that was ugly as hell, even for a last gen game. But in anycase, yeah half life 2 would definitely have gotten my vote

Heck, Episode 2 came out right before Crysis and that still looks good.

The "graphics benchmark" differed from year to year.

First it was Half-Life 2 and Doom 3, then maybe Olivion, then Supreme Commander, and finally Crysis. I probably missed a few, but Supreme Commander was definitely viewed as a game that would break your machine due to the large maps.

This gen it was GeoW, and last gen was HL2 and FEAR, possibly Farcry.Im_single

FarCry had very good looking water for its time, its still looks pretty good.

definitely.

before gears it was up for debate. you had doom 3, far cry and hl2 as the most reknowned although i always thought sc chaos theory didnt receive the praise it deserved for its graphics.

God of War? Hell no, that was ugly as hell, even for a last gen game. But in anycase, yeah half life 2 would definitely have gotten my vote

God of War 2 was the best looking game on the PS2 and looked better then about 99% of the console games out.

It did look great, but it still didn't look as good as the best the GC or XBOX had to offer.

When it comes to destruction and explosions i think it still is the graphics king. I mean EVERYTHING can be destroid, seeing a town going from nice and peaceful place to a smoldering pile of rubble really is quite satsifying.

IDK I wasnt around in the forums back then lol, but Id imagine itd either be Gears or Farcry PC or somethin.

Half Life 2, Far Cry, and Doom 3 were the reigning kings in 2004-2006. Oblivion arguably changed that, but it looks much worse in some areas. However, I don't think any game has ever so completely surpassed all competition and kept clear dominance this long, in the way that Crysis has. This is partly because Crysis looks exceptional, but also because developing better looking games for the PC that are too demanding for the current generation of consoles simply isn't profitable. That's the bottom line.

In my opinion it was Half-Life 2 &/or X³: Reunion.;)

Unmodified 2004 FarCry was short lived unfortunately, however with mods FarCry Still looks Great.
