Because the cell is a number cruncher. It sucks at gaming and rendering, but if you gave it 10,000 spreadsheets to work on, it would be fine at that.

Yeah, Sony has made my favorite consoles for 3 gens running now, but you can NEVER... NEVER trust Sony hype. Most of it is so overboard that only an idiot could believe it anyways, but still. Sony has always been full of sh*t when it comes to hyping their consoles. They lie to consumers and developers alike.

Very nice video, this was my first time actually knowing and learning about the Cell chip inside the PS3, honestly once devs take their time and take advantage of it they can produce some amazing games like uncharted, god of war, etc

It is like tech demos looking 10x better than actual games

Games are inherently very difficult to fully utilize 8 cores. Most modern games can only mostly utilize 2. Forget about using 6 more.

It was out classed by NVIDIA's Geforce 8800 for the targeted workloads i.e. games and parrellel data processing.

Current, counter advertisement against CELL type compititors from AMD

As an example, normal applications such as WinZIP 16.5 can use the compute resources of AMD'a Radeon HD stream processors.

IBM CELL BE as PC's PCI-Express add-on card, by Mercury AIB (Add-in board vendor)

NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GTS...

first, the CPU is proprietary, second it has no support (I mean instructions) and third, the video is only talking about theoreticalpower. The Cell breaks at multitasking because it only has 1 PPU and the Spe's don't work by themeselves if you don't code their Data Structure and tasks independently. Intel and AMD CPUs are general purpose and anything that is not related to "visuals" they can take the code and compile it on its own.

But when you code the Spe's the CPU is even faster than i7 because the SPE's are not "cores", they work like the stream processors found in a GPU but at 3.2 GHZ (fastest stream processoor in a GPU runs at around 1000MHZ).

I love (hate) computer nerds who aren't gamers that buy PS3's and claim they're superior without ever playing a 360... they'll argue specs until they're blue in the teeth (what does that even mean?) and ignore or discount the actual real world product.
