Playing through the Mega Man Legacy Collection, I am reminded of all the different robot masters throughout the game series. Excluding the X series... I'm going to outline the two games I thought had the best and worst lineup of Robot Masters.

Best:

Mega Man II. The first game had already grabbed all the original elemental titles... Ice, Fire, Electricity... but the bosses actual designs were all pretty lame, with Ice Man looking like an Eskimo, and Bomb Man looking like a bird (wtf). They had to be a little more creative with the names in the second game, but Mega Man II hit nearly all the marks. Good variety, decent names and a huge upgrade to the character designs from the first one. The only problem is Capcom stole all the good ideas for future Robot Masters in the upcoming titles.

Worst:

Mega Man 4. Horrendous bosses. From powers to design. Mega Man 4 had by far the lamest Robot Masters in all of the games. Only two of them are "aaight."--Dive Man and Drill Man. Dive Man looks and behaves similar to MM3's Hard Man. And Drill Man has a standard design. But that is about it. The other 6 Robot Masters are terrible. I'm going to start of with the least offensive and work my way down to the biggest abomination... So let's start with Skull Man. He looks cool, but is just a simple version of Mega Man with just a pea shooter for a weapon... Pharaoh Man. Not a good idea to include an culture moniker in any game. I think he looks dumb. But at least his powers are formidable. But you never would have guessed he is the fire elemental boss... Bright Man. He is a fucking robot with a giant light bulb on his head. Why somebody would design a boss that would be getting shot at, to have a giant glass bulb as a weak point is beyond me... Ring Man. How lame! He has the power to make your woman leave you for bigger bling... Dust Man! If Ring Man wasn't lame enough, you have a Robot Master with a giant vacuum hose built onto the top of his box body. He apparently throws garbage at you. The most stupid character design in all of Mega Man series imho... And finally we have, Toad Man. Yes, "toad." His design isn't as dumb as Dust Man's, but his powers are than he just jumps at you. And that is it. He doesn't even have an arm cannon. That, with the fact he is a robot that was made to look like a human wearing a frog suit, his design is almost as bad, making Toad Man the worst robot Master in the Mega Man series.

This is just my opinion. What is yours? What is your favorite and most hated robot Masters in the MM series?

I just played these MegaMan games again last year! What a coincidence. I was playing them with some nieces though, showing them the ropes. Now that is two more girls in the world that can say they have officially beat a few Megaman games. I'm proud of that because who else was going to show them MegaMan? :P

Yes, that means I racked up no Achievements or Trophies when I played these games because I don't like the idea that invisible awards can dictate when I play my retro games. I don't need a digital collection to release to invite me to play my classic games. I have a friend that won't play retro games he wants to revisit just because of Achievements and Trophies, which is a shame because sometimes you just want to play Mario, Pac-Man, or whatever, and he won't waste his time unless he gets 'Chievos/Trophies. It bums me out. If the game doesn't exist on an ecosystem, he won't play it/hardly play it which is depressing.

Still, it's nice to revisit your childhood from time to time.

I'm also happy to see people giving ol' Mega a chance still in this modern time with so many FPS, MMOs, and MOBAs taking people's time.

I'm a physical game collector, here's what I played them on, although I have original NES and SNES versions as well.

Best: Mega Man 9. Galaxy Man is probably my favorite of the bunch, but they're all pretty cool.

Worst: Mega Man 5. Charge Man has to be the stupidest looking robot master in the series.

There is not enough contempt in the world for Sheep Man or Plant Man.

Galaxy Man and Pharaoh Man though.

Being a big Achievement Whore myself, I can say A/Ts are a great excuse to revisit older games! But it bums me out too that a lot of people won't even attempt some of the games unless they get some modern extra that comes along with it. MM Legacy looks fantastic in 1080p btw.

The last time I played through the MM games was about 10 years ago, a couple years after the initial release of the two Anniversary Collections. I still have the system hooked up and my classic library at-the-ready. Got my "Retro Station" in the corner of the bedroom, with 4 classic systems hooked up to a CTR television on the desk. Let's see if I can dig up a pic.

Here we go:

My
My "retro station." GCN, PS2, SNES and the Atari 'Flashback'. Don't mind the Astroglide sitting on the table.
