Best current gen technical masterpiece

No stomping evident here. Just some people very upset that their really boring game isn't hailed as a masterpiece outside of their own bedrooms. No danger of you ever getting stomped since you have no thoughts or opinions, just quotes of other people's thoughts. One day you will have a thought, don't let it get you down.

@Weird_Jerk: Yeah Infinity is another one to watch! Smaller scope (smaller team, money, all basically) but very interesting nonetheless.

The amount of stuffs and effects happening in this Horizon is insane. The most technically impressive open world game.

The space to planet transition in star citizen is quite mind blowing and far better than anything else I have seen on the current market.

RotTR has some amazing set pieces, especially the scenes with the avalanche and the temple being flooded by water. Nothing on PS4 comes close, until later this year when RotTR finally lands on PS4.

Total War games taking into account their scale are always impressive

Though for me witcher 3 is the most impressive i played this gen .

Crysis 3 though not current gen game puts nearly everything this gen to shame

He said technical masterpiece, and he absolutely was right to claim TW can be called as such. Your opinions on the gameplay of this amazing AAA scoring AAA title in a long lasting and beloved franchise is irrelevant to the discussion. While the game might be slightly niche (again, irrelevant to this thread so not sure why you bring it up), it still has quite a few concurrent users (more than bf4 and battlefront on PC) and is a series that eventually sells into the millions. An incredible game that deserves praise for its incredible technical achievements.

The OP stated current games. Either way, pre-downgrade bullshit E3 Horizon doesn't even touch BF1, SC, Witcher 3: BW on PC.

My 4 main picks are:

1. Witcher 3 PC
2. Uncharted 4 PS4
3. Forza 6 Xbox One
4. Star Wars: Battlefront PC

@Guy_Brohski: they're actually video clips pre rendered and re compositioned into the gameplay, you can see micro blocking even due to video compression as stated by digitalfoundry.

So yeah wouldn't count that as impressive.

horizon makes cdpr look like a bunch of amateurs

For me so far it is a toss up between the Witcher 3 or Uncharted 4 they both do a great job of creating these amazing looking worlds and characters.

@gpuking: It's still impressive that Crystal Dynamics were able to integrate that into gameplay. It's a new technique that pushes the bounds of realism, and I'm sure other developers will use it in their games too.

As games advance I find myself admiring technical marvels less and atmosphere more.

Of all the games I currently own, the one that continues to blow me away is GTA V on PC. Playing it at 60 fps, max settings on a big TV is just an incredible experience.

Witcher 3 is technically more impressive but I prefer realistic settings and Rockstar are the masters at creating open world cities.

another couple of noteworthy mentions from the vita:

assasins creed. ubisoft got a creed game working on mobile hardware. it does have problems with performance but thats still bloody impressive.

gravity rush on the vita is also worth a mention. you can walk and fly to any part of the map without a loading screen and it can get pretty busy with the effects n such like at times. quite an impressive game too in the technical department.

Uncharted 4. Anything else falls short

The Witcher is gorgeous ,character animation needs help but the rest is amazing. Ryse looks great ,I didn't hate it but it wasnt that great. Doom looks really good for how fast it is. The order looks good but is the worst exclusive this gen easily.

It sure adds to the realism but ND has used more advanced technique already that does not use video files. Instead they use the pre calculated effects but rendered in real time thus eliminating any compression to the image. Stuffs like explosions, smoke, and fire can look real good in selected parts of the game.

This is what happens when you water down pc. I really do not blame Naughty Dawg for this though. It is the crappy hardware they have to deal with.
