even though braw is a step down from melee its still my GOTY and of the "killer games" that have came out in the later half of the year LBP is the only one i have not played but i have put in some time on MGS4 and i choose braw over it
If we are exclusively looking at '08 releases then it is Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts without a doubt on my end.
But if we are allowed to state our choice from a game that came out previously but I didn't play until this year I would personally go with World of Warcraft.

ill say this, it is the most beautiful looking game of the year. but as a really old banjo fan the demo let me down due to well.... its not like it use to be. but ive got over that and im getting it for christmas and i cant wait.
Metal Gear Solid 4 only as an achievement. Brawl is in the running for Multiplayer game of the year along with Left 4 Dead, although I'm sure that Brawl is a lock for Fighting game of the year.

I can personally vouch that the demo is a poor representation of the entire product. While I understand that you may not like the new design philosophy, the gameplay on its own merits is FANTASTIC with a wider array of parts in your garage. The only jarring part is the on ground physics when controlling a land based vehicle but if you adjust to the quirks that problem dissipates as well. So if you go in with an open mind, you should be satisfied with what is presented.
