Rules

  • The game should not have any sort of Sequel or a Prequel. It should be only one entry in the franchise.
  • Spin offs count as long as that Spin off haven't received any additional game in the series (Metal Gear: Rising for example).
  • It's OK to list a game that received expansions but not full fledged sequels or prequels (Sins of Solar Empire for example).
  • Games that received Enhanced Editions but no extra entries in the franchise also count. Games that received Remakes or Remasters also count, as long as they don't have extra entry in the franchise.

List

Planescape: Torment

Best story ever told in a game. Planescape: Torment remains high point for story driven RPGs till this day. The game stands on its and still continues to shine in today's age, without receiving any extra entries in the franchise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFFWneGAtno

World in Conflict

An Action-RTS with compelling story and explosive gameplay continues to impress even after 8+ years of its release. World in Conflict is one of those games that can easily convert you to like the genre that you never did. It's also one of those games that can stand on their own due to near flawless execution despite being the first game in the franchise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQt4Js2u7uw

World of Warcraft

The King of MMOs still have several million subscriber that still play this legendary title. The game has received several expansions that has kept the game's living breathing world of Azeroth alive. There will never be a game that will be as successful as World of Warcraft is,,, at least not anytime soon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srkeqFc2P14

The Last of Us

Naughty Dog took a step back from their fast paced Action franchise to create slower paced and more rewarding experience with The Last of Us. The game has satisfying beginning, middle and end. They can do a lot more with the franchise and we know sooner or later a sequel or a prequel is coming, but right now it stands on its own with a complete story and satisfying gameplay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQWD5W3fpPM

Freelancer

Freelancer is easily one of the most overlooked games of all time. Microsoft didn't allow anyone to publish the game online on any distribution platform after some time of its release. Today Freelancer has become a cult classic that features fun gameplay, huge galaxy to explore, phenomenal presentation, great story telling, enjoyable story and likable characters. The game is easy to learn but hard to master. The game has satisfying final act and remains a great game with complete story.

My turn:

  • Bulletstorm
  • Bloodborne
  • Heavenly Swords
  • Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
  • Skullgirls
  • Transistor
  • Brute Force
  • Advent Rising
  • Jade Empire

These are the games I played that didn't get a sequel or prequel and I had fun with these games.

Populous: The Beginning.
There have been other Populous games. But no prequels or sequels. They were entirely different (and imo worse). I guess it's a 'spin off'.
P:TB is a fun game to date, if you can get it to run on your PC.

@Gamerno6666:

I don't even have anything against Chrono Cross. I mean yeah, it's no Chrono Trigger, but it was still pretty cool.

But a sequel? It's just so far removed from Chrono Trigger. The gameplay, the game structure, the art, it's all just so different. Plus the games only tie together very loosely. More of a nod than anything else from what I remember.

The only thing they really seem to share is part of a name.

Good question, all of my favorite video games like Manhunt, SAW, Resident Evil and Silent Hill eventually got sequals.

Planescape: Torment
Sleeping Dogs (Triad Wars is cancelled, not leaving beta)
Vagrant Story
Jade Empire
Blast Corps
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Clive Barker's Undying
Sin
Einhander

Lots of games if I keep on going, actually.

@ConanTheStoner That is true. It's about as removed from Trigger as Revengeance is from the MGS games. So if one counts I think the other would.

Best game that never got a sequel? Planescape Torment no question, everything else is an honourable mention.

Speaking of which...Morrowind (Oblivion and Skyrim weren't sequels despite being Elder Scrolls) and why we never got Anarchy Online 2 is still a mystery to me.

Beyond Good and Evil and Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy

Both Zelda style games for the PS2, GameCube, and XBOX and neither have a sequel. True, Ubisoft says they are "developing" BGE2, but that's become another Duke Nukem Forever at this point.

The hell is WoW doing on the list? You do know it had 3 RTS prequels right? Maybe it's not the same genre but it's all the same franchise, same story, world, and characters.

There are plenty of anthology-ish series that make this harder to do as well. Like, most FF games for example aren't technically sequels, even though they're all the same franchise with very similar themes. Same with the most Nintendo franchises, or more recently the Tales or Souls Series.

At any rate, there were plenty of good indie games last gen that were one and done. Bastion, Braid, Outland, Journey, Mark of the Ninja, World of Goo, etc.

Psycho World - An underrated run & gun platformer that was a lot of fun, and very challenging. It plays a bit like Mega Man.

Terranigma - One of the best action-RPGs on the SNES, right up there with the Mana games.

Alundra - One of the best action-adventure/action-RPG games ever made, with excellent challenging gameplay and well-written mature storytelling. It had a "sequel", but that's a completely unrelated garbage game with the name "Alundra" slapped on for no reason.

Shadow of Memories - Underrated adventure game. The non-linear time-travel mystery plot was intriguing (despite the terrible voice acting), and the way it was structured made it fun and addictive.

Clannad - Greatest story ever written for a video game (better than Planescape, Steins Gate, Witcher, Zero Escape, Xenogears, TLOU, Persona, Walking Dead, etc.). It only had one spin-off (which isn't worth it).

Rogue Galaxy - It's like a Star Ocean game, but surpasses the Star Ocean series. The story isn't anything to write home about (though it's still fun), but its Action-RPG gameplay was great.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom - Possibly the most fun and addictive fighting game I've played. It's like Marvel vs. Capcom meets Smash Bros, cranked up to over 9000!

Deadly Premonition - The closest thing to a Twin Peaks video game done right. The gameplay mechanics are clunky and the open-world town feels empty, but it's the characters and witty writing that makes this game a cult favourite.

Vanquish - The best TPS ever made (the only TPS that comes close, mechanically, is Max Payne 3). The rocket-boost mechanics and crazy over-the-top gameplay is unlike any other FPS/TPS.

Anyway, I will go with

Demons Souls

Bloodborne

Outlast

Siren Blood curse. (Not sure)

El shaddai

TLOU

Rain

Vampire rain ( just joking)

My pick (along some others that were already mentioned): Alpha Protocol

Loading Video...

One of the best and simultaneously one of the most underrated (or even completely forgotten) games I've ever experienced. It's not without (serious) flaws but it also offers some truly great features.

Planescape Torment ist nothing like DOS, I'm afraid.

Please God, give me a gun. I don't want to live anymore in a world where people actually think that Witcher 3 had the best story ever told in video games. I can't bear that level of ignorance anymore...

Well, it's still nothing like Planescape Torment I'm afraid. Completely different mood/atmosphere/aspiration, different setting, different combat/gameplay, different visual style and art design, different world design, different focus.

DOS has not more in common with Planescape than with e.g. Witcher 3 or Skyrim. They only share the broad "RPG" classification... ;)

Funny how you cannot name any MS titles because not only there's very little amount of them but those that are there, are milked to death for soon to be two decades. I'd vote for Jet Force Gemini and Conker. Both awesome and never gotten any sequels.

It's alright, but it suffers from a lot of needless filler. The original NiGHTS didn't waste your time at all in comparison.

The more recent one I can think off is Sleeping Dogs? love this game, its great as it is no need for sequel....or is there a sequel in making?..I hope not. :P
