Ah, unreal engine 3, how you have served us well.

I first remember coming into contact with you with Gears of War on 360. I remember you loading in those beautiful textures...

Haha, no what I remember most is of course being mindblown by what I saw at that time. Gears of War was an absolutely stunning games. But texture streaming was a problem for a while in UE3 (remember it well in Mass Effect)

Unreal Engine 3 made a lot of great looking games possible. But which one is the best looking one ?

Here are some amazing looking UE3 engine games:

Dishonored:

Killing Floor 2:

I haven't played Arkham Knight and The vanishing of Ethan Carter yet, but I think they look amazing too:

So how about you. UE3 powers so many games. Which one blew you away ?

Hard to list because so many games use UE3 and all recent one look impressive. But I think Arkham Knight, Killing Floor 2 and Ethan Carter are the most impressive in recent years.

@Cloud_imperium:

Yeah it's crazy how well this engine holds up even in this gen...

Well, that has always been a thing for Unreal Engine. I remember Unreal Engine 2.5 games looking amazing last gen, like Bioshock.

This thread isn't just about what games are currently the best looking ones, but over the years that the engine has been used, what games stood out the most :)

Guilty Gear did some cool stuff with UE3 , not mindblowing but verry diffirent.

Mixin 3D with 2D that didn't look weird.

ps:Didn't know ME runed on it.

Yeah,

Unreal Engine 3 at the start had a problem with games look 'samey'... I mean you could tell that was an UE3 game.

But over the years, yeah. You'd be suprised how many games were made on UE3.

Mirror's Edge also has a beautiful artstyle to go along with the engine:

(always thought ME was frostbite...)

You mean Guilty Gear Xrd? That has some of the best cel-shading I've seen. It kept the 2D look of the series almost intact, despite being all 3D.

But yeah, it looks very different to what we'd normally expect from UE3. It demonstrates that there's plenty of versatility to the engine.

I think the last ue3 game that impressed me visually was Alice: Madness Returns, not so much for it's technical prowess but the art design was on point.

To a degree Even Alice looked like a Ue3 game, there's something about that engines shaders that will always remind me of gears of wars color palette.

I'm pleased to see Ue4 doesn't seem to have this problem.

I'm just going to make this thread a place where I dump my screenshots. LOL xD

Though technically not the best game, I always loved how RO2 looked.

Ah yes, I did also really enjoy how Alice looked; Unfortunately I couldn't really get into the game. Meaning I didn't get far to see more of the magical world =(

For all it's greatness, a lot of games did have a distinct UE3 look.

Mass Effect still resonates in my mind as the game that blew me away the most last generation. Even if it hasn't aged all that well.

Same with Gears 1 for me. Didn't age well.

Absolutely, Mass Effect was an incredible looking game, and had a huge scale.

I really like UE3, the optimization of this engine is amazing. Mirror's Edge( first major AAA game to support GPU PhysX), SPC Conviction( UE 2.5), King's Quest, Life is Strange, DmC reboot, Brother's in Arms Hells Highway, Shadow Complex, Fable,Specs: Ops the line, MK, Bulletstorm, I Am Alive, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons etc and the list goes on .....

its UE3, on PC was UE3 was upgraded to DX11 back in 2011'ish using

  • Bokeh Depth of Field - Applies movie or photo like out of focus effects to the rendered image.
  • Tessellation - Generate more triangles from a mesh for smoother surfaces including silhouettes.
  • Image Based Reflections - Rendering whole-scene glossy HDR reflections.
  • Deferred Shading - Rendering complex lighting independent of the geometric complexity.
  • Full Scene Anti Aliasing - MSAA for fighting stair casing image artifacts.
  • Screen Space Subsurface Scattering - SSS material effect for rendering realistic human skin.

Yeah some games are using the last version of UE3 with even some advanced effects and it looks pretty darn close to UE4.

Eventhough that is a way more powerful engine.

There are many exceptions. The Gears of War games all look great on 360.

Bulletstorm is a great looking game on both PC and consoles

Yeah, the first one blew me away at the start of the gen.

And the latter ones (which I still have to play >:O ) added a lot of color to the graphical style.

Same here. I love how killing floor looks. Especially the detail pops out in slow motion.

Also the gibs and the way different parts of the body can fly off is really impressive.

Good to see some praise for Infinite. It certainly has a great artstyle to go along with the engine.

I think Far Cry 3&4 are running on modified anvil engines (which is th engine behind AC)

I played the free weekend on steam past weekend (and ended up loving and buying the game) but it's still a long way off from its full release. I would say at least a year.

Unless Sony does something like MS and allows early access on their console (and there is a high chance they will do that), you won't see it soon on PS4.

I heard the PS4 version of KF will get couch co-op. That sounds so awesome, I hope the PC version gets it as well :P

Thanks mate for the quick reply a year isn't to bad because I'm getting a PS4 in 4 weeks time and I want to build up a collection of games so if the game came out any earlier I think I would be too busy playing other games on the PS4 lol.

When done right 21:9 adds a whole lot more to your peripheral view and the game renders more of the game world.

The first time you get behind a 21:9 monitor really feels like a "verademing" ^^

Yeah there is still a lot of content missing from the game. Though, the last content patch was a big one.

What games are you getting with your PS4 ? And what games are you looking forward to ?

Personally am really looking forward to Horizon and Ratchet and Clank. So I might get a PS4 next year (though I'd rather hold out and wait for a slim)

I'm kind of spoiled for choose because I want The Last Of Us Remastered when I pick up my PS4 then a week or so after I get the console I want The Order 1886 I know most gamers ripped the game apart for having a short campaign and QTE but I'm fine playing a game that only lasts 5 or 6 hours long lol plus I can pick it up at a bargain price, Wolfenstein The Old Blood and even though I owned this game on the XB1 I never completed it so I'm looking forward to playing that again then when I've got some spare cash i'll probably pick up Killzone Shadowfall because I love playing shooters mate and then I'll get Mad Max I love open world games.

In 2016 that's when things really get interesting hopefully we will see the likes of Horizan Dawn Zero, Hellblade , Shadow Warrior 2, The New Doom game, Mafia 3 and Dead Island 2.

Ratchet and Clank looks interesting I enjoyed playing Tools of Destruction on the PS3 and even though I own an XB1 it's nice to have the best of both worlds isn't it mate.

@freedomfreak: I really hope 21:9 becomes popular for PC gaming as well as TVs (and by that extent: console gaming)

It would be great for TVs for movies, but less great for series and older stuff shot in 4:3 :p

But I am way more excited by 21:9 than just increased pixelcount like say 4K.

I'll play TLOU, GOW and Uncharted remastered. But not in a hurry for those games since... It's always better to wait to replay a game you finished :)

The Order, apart from it's amazing graphics, looks whack. I wasn't let down by the reviews and review scores. But when I watched how aweful those QTEs are, my excitement just died. But you can still have fun, and yeah, for a good price it's still worth seeing ^^

I want another flopped game: Driveclub. Still looks good to me and I loved their Motorstorm games ^^

Killzone is a game I will also get. Loved the previous Killzone games. I'm currently playing Mad Max on PC. Enjoying it so far !

Yeah 2016 looks like a solid year for PS4, less remasters and more original games ! Really excited for a lot of the games you listed.

As well as my most anticipated game: Dishonored II. And on PS4 it's probably Ratchet and Clank.

Xbox One and PS4 will definitely be worth owning in 2016. Great exclusives for both of them. Damn, I'm really excited for QB too. So might get an Xbox slim next year xD
