What about Lost Levels or Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.2D = Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World. There are tons of other entries you could fit in here.
3D = Super Mario Galaxy easily.

ITs a tie between SMB3, SMG and SM64. Banjo Kazooie is also one of the best.web966This.
IDK why....butI just like Banjo Kazooie better than banjo tooie. Better music and level designs.
IMO SMG has surpassed SM64
Shinobishyguy
Yeah it's better but not even close to better for its time. SM64 is a much better game for its time and I think that's what matters.

There is no competition for SMG. It is, in fact, awesome for its time (which would be now). You just don't realize this because the competition is so..........almost none-existant
I agree, Gex was a great game.
Also, Conker's Bad Fur Day (if it counts), and the Donkey Kong Country series on the SNES.
Super Mario Bros 3. Though if you'd divide 3D and 2D the best 3D platformer would either be SM64 or SMG. SMG is the better game in my opinion, but it's not the revolution that SM64 was.

Depends, best for it's time or best ever?
Best for it's time: Super Mario Bros, NES
Best right now: Super Mario Galaxy, Wii

Banjo 3?
Not yet but I'm hyped for it this year and should be awesome considering the console & dev. but was meaning the first one on N64.You made me think of a side note.
Sure would be something if Banjo 3 was GOTY 2008 making a platformer GOTY ( SMG 2007 ) for two straight years as we have not seen that for a long, long time.
- Another World
- Flashback
- Heart of the Alien
- Fade to Black
- Heart of Darkness
They were an amazing platforming series, one of the best ever. They don't make games like those anymore, unfortunately...Panzer_Zwei
have you ever owned an AMIGA 500?

I thought the first Oddworlds had a feel that was similar.
Surprised only one personhas said Klonoa:| -Sniper99-I played a GBA Klonoa and I thought it was entertaining.Definitely not the best though. My favourite is SM64,but SMG is the better game in every respect.

If they debuted on the Amiga 500 then they must have sold it here, since the games are french.I never did see one though, I was never on the PC side.

oh! that explains why the cutscene at the beginning had a computer screen displaying french text like "bonsoir professor", and something "ferrari" in it :)
Now, I have to ask you this (completely unrelated). Have you ever seen/heard of the anime cartoon Captain Future (Capitaine Flam) and Grendizer (Goldorak)?
